Biggest meltdown on a game show ever?

Is it just me, or does the family who wins the last round of Family Feud ALWAYS win the game? It seems like they triple the scores of that last round so whoever wins it, gets to move on to Fast Money. If so, what is the point of the earlier rounds?

That is true. They always triple the points so that the last round is worth nearly 300 points. The only time you don't win the game if you win the last round is if you had 0 points. Then I think it goes into some sudden death tie breaker.

But the game has definitely morphed into more of a comedy show than a true game show. Steve Harvey is a great host and the producers are basically making as many questions as possible that have one or more of the following answers: penis, sex, tits, etc etc.

Not always. They sometimes have to go to sudden death when both teams don't reach 300 points.

Plus, any point value can obviously help a team reach 300 points so the earlier rounds aren't worthless by any means. There have been cases in which the only answers given in triple round were the low answers for few(er) points so instead of say, 250+ points being up for grabs, there was only 60-70 points. If a team has 240+ points before the triple round though, those points will still obviously help them win the game so the first three rounds aren't useless at all.

I will say this though -- before Steve Harvey became the host of Family Feud, every once in a while there would be teams who would win the whole game after the third (double point value) round due to the first two rounds being 100 points max and the third round being 200 points max (300 points is the goal). This would make the show run short so what they did in these rare cases was add a commercial break in the middle of the fast money bonus round.

Now with Steve Harvey though, I noticed that if a team wins the first two rounds that the third round is very low in terms of points so that they intentionally go into a fourth round. I honestly don't like it since it kind of goes against the integrity of the game. The survey questions should be set up before the game is started. But yeah, next time when a team wins the first two rounds, notice how the top answer in the third round is very low (no more than ~30 pts.). It's a bit funny but (as I said before) I don't think it's right that the producers do it. The questions should already be in place and shouldn't change based on the number of points that a team has during the game.
 
There's this UK game show called "Golden Balls," and the climax of each episode is a segment where the two remaining contestants have to choose to present to one another either a "split" ball or a "steal" ball. Both choose the former, and the prize money is split between them. Both choose the latter, and both lose everything. One chooses "split" and the other "steal," and the person who chooses "steal" gets everything. It's a classic game theory scenario. Before a final choice is made, the contestants typically try to convince each other that they'll choose "split," and that the other should do the same.

One particularly interesting example was covered in a very good Radiolab episode, and I really recommend listening to it. Here's the clip of the segment itself, though. There's not really a melt down, but the actual unedited discussion went on for ~45 minutes, and you can see how conflicted one of the contestants is throughout.

They need to fill a half hour of the show.
 
My father and his family were on Family Feud in the 80's. They lost horribly and my dad has shown up on a few Worst Game Show, shows because of one of his answers.

If I recall correctly, the rounds are single score, double score, triple score. This means that the final round is always important. Essentially, if each team wins one round, then whoever wins the third takes it. However, if one team kicks ass at the first two rounds, the other team still has a chance if they do really well at the third (but they're not guaranteed the win). If they didn't do it this way, you'd get situations where the third round was meaningless, and a team would just give up.
