Blizzard Cancels Next-Gen MMO Titan

I think it has to do with the IP, even when it was 1.0 it still had a decent amount of players.

Yep, it's a niche game with a ton of fanservice to FF fans. Lot of other games like GW2, SW:TOR, LOTRO have sustainable populations but that doesn't mean they're anything like WoW was.

So much ether in every Blizzard thread.

But in real life, Reaper of Souls/Hearthstone/Heart of the Swarm are all excellent games and Blizzard continues to rock my world.

This! Well, and WoW + Heroes of the Storm for me as well. They seem to know exactly what I like in a game.

That can't have been an easy decision, but it's not the first time they decide late in the game that it's just not going to work out for them. As we're approaching what should be the final SC2 expansion, I'm now even more curious what their Next Big Thing after that could be.

Sign me up for Warcraft IV, though I also doubt it will ever happen.

Even if ARR managed to make it, FF 14 was so close to being the biggest failure in SE history that I imagine it scares blizzard as much as it encourages them.

Time for Warcraft 4.

And do please ignore the anything that came after WC3:TFT.

So we maybe get a better story, i played wow from vanilla but man not everything translated that well from Warcraft 3 to WoW, especially not how they killed off most of the awesome anti heroes.

There it goes my Starcraft MMO hope

:(

I would argue that FF14:ARR has proven you can make a sub-based mmo and build a new stable user-base.

Honestly though if S-E had simply evolved/reinvented FF11 over time there might have not been the need for a full blown sequel in FF14. What World of Warcraft was in 2004 and where it is today are great leaps forward.

This is the right decision in my opinion and certain goes with my wishes for the company. I don't want them to get crushed in the flow of expectations. Keep it moderate in scope but with amazing quality.

Anyway what do I know.. I just want stuff from them.

Reaper of Souls redeemed them in my eyes, seems like it was Jay Wilson's doing.

The Auction House experiment was a failure and they admitted it.

No trading is worse than Auction House imo.

Bu bu bu Kotick.

Reaper of Souls and Hearthstone are not the creations of a "destroyed company."

RoS traded one evil for another. It's still bad in other ways.

Hearthstone is very bad, IMO, especially compared to the WoW TCG itself. Absolutely zero diversity in decks compared to the WoW TCG. Extremely watered down design.

wasnt this the project jay wilson was moved too ?

Also I don't agree that Warcraft 4 is impossible. They're busy on SC2 right now, but after it's done I can totally see them doing War 4. It could be connected to WoW somehow too (God, imagine if you could import your friends/clan as heroes to control or something?)

WoW was released at a time when MMOs were still relatively in infancy. Sure, EverQuest and Ultima Online had been around for years, and FFXI and City of Heroes had released just prior to WoW, but most of the other MMOs were unfriendly to newcomers, and it was very common for players to quit before they got anywhere near the level caps. WoW basically launched at a perfect time.

It's kind of wild to think about just how young the MMO genre (as we now know it) is, and wilder still to consider how well WoW has kept its relevance over the years.

Compare Everquest in 2008 (10th anniversary) to WoW's upcoming 10th anniversary this fall. Sure, WoW isn't quite the giant it once was in terms of mindshare, but it still has an extremely vibrant and active player-base for a game that's been out for so long. That kind of long-term support is an area where Blizzard is practically unrivaled.

Blizzard probably played Destiny and saw the mechanic they need to make the next big thing. Destiny with Blizzard magic and years of polish could be the next world of warcraft.

Still wondering what exactly titan was. Cant make it too much like wow or it would never get out of wows shadow.

I wonder what the chances of an in-depth post mortem are. I love it when devs go into why their games don't work, as it tends to be a lot more interesting and educational than gushing about how awesome their successful titles are.

I'm also reminded of the Halo MMORPG--The artwork for that was fasciating to go through.

Starcraft 2 will be lucky to wrap up next year. I don't really see how a Warcraft 4 could come together for ages, and it'd open up tools for people to make Heroes of the Storm obsolete.

Since D3, they don't know how to make the games as good as they used to. Activision destroyed them.

Lol, OK. I'd argue that Blizzard is one of the most consistent devs out there, certainly in the top 3. Vanilla D3 was the only big mistake they've had since... I don't even know when, and they fixed D3, as evidenced by RoS sales and great reviews. Sure WoW subs are going down but the game is ten years old so that's hardly surprising. Blizzard is doing just fine.

This what they should have done, but instead they just made a boring themepark.

There goes my hope for a decent MMO besides WoW =\

Well, I'd rather have it canceled than it being a bad game.

I'm really curious about the game though, and I'd love if they shared what they had in mind for it and maybe released some WIP shots and such.

Time to bring Jeffrey Kaplan aka Tigole back to development on WoW! A shame it didn't work though but now to put those people on development of there other games. That guy did hilarious stuff at Blizzcon.

Disappointing. I honestly felt like the only people who had the talent (both game design-wise and technically) to make an MMO that could top WoW was Blizzard.

That said, I can't imagine that they'd give up on the idea of doing another MMO forever.

Agree with this as well. I've been playing the game for over 9 years now :)

Starcraft 2 has tools for the same thing, but nothing there has taken off the same way. I doubt anyone is going to make a custom MOBA that's going to replace LoL or DOTA these days.

Wow that is huge! I'm sort of relieved that they did cancel Titan as to not split up the already thinning wow. Though I doubt they'll do a WOW2 anytime soon.

The RTS/SC2 team is working on Heroes of the Storm right now. IF there ever were to be a Warcraft IV, it won't be for a very long time if at all. Plus, Rob Pardo is long gone.

What does this mean?

One could interpret that to mean a highly polished and fully realized sandbox MMO that brings the sub-genre into the public consciousness like WoW did for raiding/instances and "theme park" style content.

But yeah, "next gen" is a silly label to give to that. I'd just call it different or refreshing, since sandbox MMOs haven't gotten much love until very recently with ArcheAge, Black Desert, and Landmark/EQNext.

Starcraft 2's engine is pretty abrasive to being a Moba, which pushes players away from putting much effort into attempting to recreate popular ones.

I don't really think Warcraft's engine would be that different, other then maybe having better models.

I'm not sure any custom game will ever take off the same way DOTA did, I doubt Blizzard is worried about that, and if it did, they'd probably try to buy out the team or something, after what happened with DOTA.

But yeah, I know they're still working on HotS too. I'm not saying it'll be soon, but I think people saying it's impossible as long as WoW is still going are being pessimistic.

What a waste of time and money. Blizzard are a joke these days.

Honestly, I think the word "Joke" should be banned from every gaming forum, since it is one of the most abused words on gaming sites, followed by the phrase "slap to the face".

Those two words thing automatically makes you opinion worthless to me anyways (not that it matters).

So what might we see at this year's Blizzcon?

Diablo 3 expansion?
Starcraft 2 expansion?
Warcraft 4?
Lost Vikings Remake?
Legacy of the Void for sure.

They seem to be doubling down on wow lately by increasing expansion prices by $10 and saying they want to get them out sooner. (Even saying Draenor might just have two raid tiers before its finished.)

Guess they will just ride it out to make as much as they can and concentrate on non MMO stuff for the future.

Calling it now: this year's BlizzCon is going to be the best one yet.

Dont see how. I was looking forward to see Titan finally being revealed during this year's Blizzcon but now, the only interesting things that can be unveiled at this point is Legacy of the Void for SC2 and a Beta announcement for Heroes of the Storm.

WoW's panel will probably be focused on content patches for WoD.
D3's panel will likely be the same.

Yeah, I like Heroes of the storm and I'd like any LotV news, but it will be disappointing if they don't have any surprises for Blizzcon.
