My girlfriend and I have been having trouble getting a large enough group together for our usual games (Apples to Apples, Last Night on Earth, Risk, etc). We've been playing Skip-bo & Carcassonne, but we're looking for more games for just the 2 of us. I know the thread has some recommendations, but it;s a big thread, and I'm looking for some help finding said games without paying an arm and a leg. Any advice on other games she might enjoy given the games we currently play?

That's a pretty big range of games that you guys play, so I won't limit too much other than to not include the super-heavy stuff.

Battle Line: Super cheap light card game. Play with the "advanced" rules (claim flags only at beginning of turn) and it can get pretty intense with the different tactics. Each person tries to make a hand to claim a flag and Tactics cards can screw everything up by acting as wild cards, disabling hands, etc.

Lost Cities: Another cheapo light card game like Battle Line. I like it a bit less than Battle Line but it's actually grown on me a good deal recently. There is a fun push-your-luck factor to this game.

If your gf is not averse to heavier stuff (though certainly not heavy by any means, more mediumweight), check out Twilight Struggle or 1960. Card-draw games with really great historical themes. TS is a bit better but also slightly more intimidating.

In terms of games that can be played with more, but work really well with two, check out San Juan (fairly light card-draw game where you build up a settlement with your cards, not much conflict but a good deal of depth) and Stone Age (nice light worker-placement game that looks gorgeous).

I can't believe AstroLad just let a perfect opportunity to recommend Catan Card Game go by.

While my wife and I don't play it as often as we used to, it still is a relatively standard part of our two player gaming.

Heroscape IS really fun. The problem is getting into it now is going to cost you an arm and a leg to have a set big enough to make anything epic.

At least they're eventually reprinting some of the cooler heroes/squads. Wish I knew that before I paid a ton for my wave 5 samurai.

Had a pretty epic Fluxx session earlier tonight. The rules got crazy insane toward the latter ten minutes of the game. We were wondering if it would ever end. ^_^

I think it's about time for a new order to be placed, oh my yes.[/farnsworth]

Looking at:

Dungeon Lords
Galaxy Trucker
At the Gates of Loyang
RftG: Brink of War

Difficulty: CSI is out of Galaxy Trucker at the moment.

Picked up Dunwich Horror over the weekend. This is likely the only big board expansion I'll buy for a long time: I was conflicted between Dunwich and Innsmouth. I made the decision for the Madness and Injury cards, and to dilute down the item decks. Innsmouth doesn't provide any new equipment.

Thoughthammer is my go to place. Their shipping is fast (to L.A.) and their prices are decent.
Yeah, CSI caters better to the east coast crowd it seems, while TH ships much faster to the west coast even with their free shipping.

Damn USPS :(, my order of Agricola has been stuck at international dispatch for over a week now, I'm starting to fear it won't arrive.

Has anyone tried the Catapult, Tower or Newer (can't remember the name) expansion of Carc? they don't come in the Big Box and I wonder if they are worth it.

Played a four player game of Agricola last night. Most really enjoyed it, but one player thought it took too long and there were too many "fiddly bits". He thought it would make a better online game. It will probably hit the game table again, though probably for two or three player games.

Also had my first experience with Dominion using the base, Intrigue and Seaside sets put together. Great game. I was a close second in one game... and got -1 points in another. I think the biggest knock on Dominion is if the players have any gaps in skill level/experience, the newer player(s) will get crushed. But as one of the players stated: "I just crushed three games in a row, hammered by curses and bad draws and yet, I totally want to play again".

I do think Gric is best with 2-3. Still long with 3 but as long as people are into it it's more like one of those games where two hours fly by and you're like wtf where did they time go. Just a lot of tension each behind each decision (at least in our games).

Tons more games coming to iPhone/iPad according to Codito Development's Facebook Page: Le Havre, Tigris & Euphrates, Ra, Medici, El Grande, Tikal, Age of Industry, and Brief History of the World.
That's awesome, even though T&E is the only one I've played more than once. Here's hoping that iCarc is the new standard for boardgaming on the iPhone. Such quality.

That will go well with the announcement of all the great games coming out on blackberry.

:(
You should get the next iTouch! Or this gen's iTouch once the prices go down.

Fill 'er up devs.

I have a relatively recent Ipod classic that'll last me a long time. Only case I have for an iAnything is if my phone dies and Apple/AT&T divorce.

Outside chance at convincing my wife she wants my iPod and I need a touch, but that's still not likely for a bit.

El Grande is well worth revisiting.

Neuroshima Hex got confirmed, as well.
Ooh sweet, I got that a couple weeks ago but still need to learn it. Wonder how long it will take for some of these to start coming out.

We seriously can't be far away from at least Dominion right?

Dungeon Quest looks cool but what i'm really looking forward to is something similar to Warhammer Quest, where the players cooperate with each other and there is no Dungeon master.

Anyone know of anything like that?

Cooperative play with no GM? Arkham Horror.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was thinking of something with a more traditional fantasy theme. I don't think any of my friends are into Lovecraft

Descent is the closest fantasy product to warhammer quest but it does involve a GM like player involvement.

Regarding Carcs, my wife and I prefer Hunters and Gatherers to the XBLA version, even though it takes more than twice the time to set up and play.

I played a few games of standard and Martian Fluxx at Pax East and decided to pick up Family Fluxx to try to introduce it to the family over the summer. It was between that and We Didn't Playtest This At All, and my FLGS doesn't stock it. I really need to start shopping online.

All these board games popping up for iPad really are making me take a hard look at it. Considering the difference in pricing, it would pay for itself after a dozen games or so.

I'd be wary of that tradeoff though. I'm not really impressed with the iPad as a device for real tabletop gaming. Small World 2p edition is a cute gimmick and that's it. Don't get me wrong playing Carc with gaffers is amazing but for now that is by far the peak of boardgaming on the device. I actually picked up a tabletop Carc set [/i]after[/i] many hours with the iPhone version just to have a real version to play.

Then again I am responsible for this manifesto (not really) so maybe I'm just bias. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=327784

Anyone got any gamin' planned for the weekend? We're having a WC blowout at my place tomorrow. After the U.S. beats Africa, we're going to play some Carc (probably start integrating the expansions now), Stone Age (it's been a while since we've busted out this great game), and probably Dominion (been a few weeks so time's up).

Doing some gaming tonight actually. A friend is back in town for the weekend to join my usual group of four. Not sure what we're playing. It's my pick. I was leaning towards Agricola, but the wife wasn't happy about that.

Maybe RftG, but not sure how it goes with 5. Kind of want to do Power Grid, but that'll really make wife angry.

I had a chance to play Endeavor for the first time last night. I liked it. Pretty simple to learn and fairly quick to play (probably around an hour to an hour-and-a-half but our game took almost 2 because one dude has serious analysis paralysis). Kind of a pain to set up but at least the randomness of the initial board should add some variety to future plays. I'm tempted to pick up a copy for myself but I think I'll play a few more times before making that jump.

Also, I've been reading about a new game called Leaping Lemmings. It's from GMT, who publish the awesome Twilight Struggle, Washington's War, and BattleLines. It's another card-driven game but this time it's a racing game as each player, playing as a mad scientist, is trying to get his or her lemmings to jump off a cliff. So the strategy is traversing the board (which is composed of hexagonal grids of varying terrain) while not getting eaten by two eagles hovering over the game board. Sounds like more quick, fun action with some luck involved (card draw and dice rolling for eagle movement) which my family tends to favor.

BG GAF RISE FROM YOU GRAVE

We played a good deal of Carc this weekend with Inns & Cathedrals. I swear my wife gets more worked up over Carc than any other game. "But blocking your big city from being completed is part of the game!" Can't count how many times I said that. :lol

We played about half a four-player game of Arkham Horror + Dunwich this weekend. We quit due to time, but things weren't looking good for life on earth... Glaaki was half way up the doom track and his spawn had whittled down our hasty preparations. Setup and first-through organization of the expansion was a pain in the neck as expected, but I was pleased with the way it played.

I have Runewars sessions to talk about when I find time to organize my thoughts.

Played Puerto Rico for the first time this weekend. Granted the dude teaching it wasn't the best, and I was half-drunk, but my initial impression is that I don't see what makes the game worthy of the BGG top slot.

It just doesn't seem like there's that many paths to victory? There are some fairly obvious and powerful combos of buildings I figured out halfway through the round. And I can see how you can fuck over other players pretty severely by taking specific actions at specific times. But eh.

Dominion just seems superior, to me. It is certainly more flexible. And seems like it has more "hidden depth."

But the again the point of hidden depth is that its... hidden. So maybe I should just keep playing. Thousands of BGGs can't be wrong, can they?

Not much new going on. Havent been able to play anything in a week.

I did find a copy of the 99 edition of Acquire. The sexy plastic one. Can't wait till that shows up.

Someone actually had a nearly-new, unpunched copy of Magic Realm for sale on eBay this weekend, and the bids stood at $51 last time I looked. I didn't get to it in time, though. :(

Played some games for the first time in a while this weekend. The wife and a friend played a few games of Stone Age and then he and played Thunderstone.

I really like thunderstone but damned if those card abilities don't raise some questions. Need to dig up a really nice faq for that game.

When is Battles of Westeros out? Gonna be the game that busts my wife's wargame cherry :P

I don't count Small World, that's like just sticking in the tip :P
