Brandish: The Dark Revenant |OT| - Pit Shenanigans

Oh, well now I am just annoyed that it lets you stack them, and the fact that it's a useless item taking another spot in the inventory. More so the wasted space than anything else.

Unless of course I am missing some clever use for them.

- Killing That Which Cannot Die

As you progress through the game, you’ll encounter undead foes — enemies who will collapse before you, but then rise again after only a short while has passed. There is a way, however, to keep them down for good! During your travels, you’ll amass a hefty stock of life-giving H.Potions and magic-restoring M.Potions… but you’ll also amass identical-looking H.Poisons and M.Poisons, which reduce your life or magic points when consumed. These items are seemingly useless, existing solely to trick you… except that M.Poison can also be used as undead bane! Simply drop an M.Poison bottle on the body of a recently-slain undead foe, and as long as that M.Poison remains undisturbed, that particular enemy will never bother you again.

Is there any reason to hold onto gold bars, or should I just vendor them.

Is there a way to tell in general if I should hold onto certain things?

So Warp is really expensive, so I've been trying to save up. However, Im curious about the other skills. I've used a few rings but mainly are selling them. Is Warp really the best choice after Fire?

There's no use for them. Just sell them whenever you can.

Warp Magic is easily the best spell in the game, and you'll need it in order to get the 100% completion for all the floors. You should purchase a Warp Magic scroll on the
8th floor of the Tower
.

I recommend to sell gold bars and breakable weapons in order to grow your money.

Well, technically, the whole idea is to trick you into wasting your potions. It's a cruel trap put in place by the developers (like so many others!), and you're supposed to take note of that and drop the item without stacking it... unless you're on autopilot, at which point you can say bye-bye to your potions. ;)

It's a good way to keep you on your toes, and the sort of developer cruelty that I quite appreciate!

Unless of course I am missing some clever use for them.

As noted in my blog, there is a hidden secondary use for M.Poison, which I also think is kind of cool. H.Poison, on the other hand, is just plain useless as far as I'm aware, and should be discarded immediately.

Warp and Heal are the most useful spells in the entire game. After Fire, I recommend picking up those two a.s.a.p. (though I believe you'll actually get a free copy of Heal from one of the stone monuments eventually, if I'm not mistaken -- though you'll get LOTS of use out of it if you buy it before then, so I'd still recommend shelling out the money).

Once you have Fire, Warp and Heal, I recommend skipping out on the other attack spells (Freeze is somewhat useful, but Lightning is only really useful in Dela Mode, and I've never once used Quake or Timestop at all) in favor of Barrier and Toughen, both of which will help out significantly during boss battles, especially at the very tail end of the game.

Does this lucky charm do anything other than make me feel...slightly better about being trapped in a spiraling tower?

The Poisons actually seem to give a solid chunk of money when sold, but I'd definitely drop them if you're either prone to being absent minded (and don't mind the skeletons) or need space ASAP and you don't have broken swords or whatever to drop instead.

Boosts your luck as I recall, and can be nigh-essential towards the end.

Fair enough, the problem is that the game isn't difficult enough for me to care if I am missing a potion or ten. It's just messing with my need to pick up all the items I can and inventory management since items don't automatically stack.

So why can't I get the treasure at the end of floor 1 to unlock despite the map saying I've completed 100% of the floor?

is there any penalty to using magic? MP replenishes so fast...

There isn't, save for the fact that your strength only goes up when you use physical attacks, and your intelligence only goes up when you use magic attacks -- so if you rely too much on one or the other, the other stat will fall behind a little.

Also, the spells that are handiest later in the game use a lot more MP than Fire.

-Tom

Oh man, I never used magic, and then I started using magic and I was dealing 1 damage.

And then I spammed and int levels started rising super fast.

Anyway, I was thinking the game was a little on the easy side, but deaths are a little more punishing than I expected.

Really fun game. I want to play while listening to podcasts, but I don't want to miss all the cool music (falcom makes such good music).

Thanks Tom, sounds good

So, in general, what should you be spending money on? The only thing I bought was a pack of sledgehammers in the beginning of the game for 500 gold (which I now regret because I constantly have a surplus of 20+). Are you always given enough of everything in terms of finding it in the dungeon, or should you stock up on supplies every now and then? Is it worth it to buy better armor and swords and stuff?

I'd say buy new armor when you can, as even if you find some in treasure chests, it never hurts to have a little extra protection BEFORE that point.

Also, buy Heal, Warp, Toughen and Barrier magic as soon as you can afford them. The others are OK too, but those four are virtually essential.

Yup. I don't know why PSP games get randomly removed all the time. (and then re-added usually when pointed out)
I wish there was a good single contact for this.

This has been reported to Sony, so hopefully it'll show back up soon. Not sure what happened, but it was almost certainly just a goof.

On the plus side, did you notice that the game has a perfect 5-star rating with 50 votes? That's pretty damned impressive! I've seen some high ratings before, but never a full-on 5.00 with that many votes. You guys are awesome! ;)

...Now if only the game can be purchased again by Vita owners, that number can grow even farther! Grrrr...

Imagine how high it would grow if people from Europe could buy it ;)

What is the point of retry bread? It seems I can save anywhere, and when I do it auto generates a retry point?

Impatience, basically. If you're playing on an OG PSP especially, saving your game takes time: it involves opening the menu, selecting Data, selecting Save, accessing the memory stick, picking a slot, waiting for it to write the save game, then canceling out a few times till you're playing the game again.

Using Retry Bread involves -- at worst -- opening the item menu and pressing X. It's virtually instantaneous. And it carries no risk of overwriting a save game slot that you wanted to keep on-hand for some reason or another.

Especially in Dela Mode, this can help keep a solid flow to the game when things get intense -- there are scenes, for example, where Dela is literally dodging boulders, and you might be tempted to save after every single one she successfully avoids. That could wind up requiring 5-10 save breaks before you make it through, which would severely impact the flow of gameplay. With Retry Bread, you can just put that in one of your quick slots and never miss a beat.

It's a convenience more than anything, but there are definitely times where I found it to be a more convenient option than saving, especially toward the end of the game and in Dela Mode.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
This game has singlehandedly made me very, very interested in dungeon crawlers. Thank God XSEED's got Xanadu Next on the way.

If you have a capable PC you should take a look at Legend of Grimrock 1 and 2. Both are excellent.

I actually have both games, and keep forgetting to actually play the damn things. I was wondering while playing through Brandish tonight whether those would satisfy my dungeon crawling joneses.

I played only Grimrock 1 and have the same problem with 2 :p
I'm mainly interested in Brandish because I LOVE Grimrock and there seem to be a lot of similarities, so I'd say there is a good chance you'll like it.

If you liked Grimrock 1 then Grimrock 2 is going to blow you away, it's way better than the first one.

Anyone know how to access the locked door on the upper right part of the map on Tower 9F? It's the only area left on the map that I need for 100% map. Don't think there are any switches or keys left as well.

You'll have to get to it from above -- the switch to unlock the door is inside the room.

Ruins Area 10 really tarnished what was a pretty amazing game up to that point. Blech.

I like Ruins Area 10! If only for the
girl spirit
, which I find to be one of the saddest and yet most engaging NPCs in the game.

Wait til you get to
Dark Zone 2
ohoho

(truthfully I don't remember what Ruins 10 was)

Yeah, that's where I am now and GODDAMNIT

Edit: Finally past it. Phew. I was not well-stocked for that. I can't even describe the relief I felt when I got to the next shop.

10? was not so bad. i didn't do any extra markings, was pretty straightforward imo.

didn't have time to play yesterday. the withdrawals are real.

Hmm... I'm itching to use that 10% PSN discount for this game, but got still a few games backlogged. You guys think this will be discounted anytime soon? Should I bite the bullet now?

buy it now, it's already cheap as hell and I don't think it will get discounted anytime soon.

Just finished the game, absolutely loved it.

The difficulty curve of the game is spot-on. Always just forgiving enough for it not to get frustrating, with a lot of challenges.

The ending really got to me, too.

Any chance we'll get to play the sequels one day?

Maaaan, I wish we'd get the sequels. There's a certain mystique about old Japanese PC games that I love, and of course they never get re-released.

Le sigh.
