Bullshots have ruined my excitement for next-gen

If all these videos and screens are how these PS4 games will actually play, next-gen is going to be freaking amazing. The problem is, these screens and videos don't look too different than marketing materials that get released for current-gen games, even though, when you pop the game in and play it, it looks nothing like that.

My skepticism, fueled by being lied to over and over again, is killing my excitement, and I wish that wasn't the case...

Bullshots are fine.

CGI videos with a fake hud are not.

No they're not. They allow developers to get away with terrible in-game IQ.

I think everyone should know that Watchdogs was a live demo considering the amount of tearing it featured :P

Wasn't the Watch_Dogs demo said to be running on PC?

The only problem with the excessive use of bullshot for current-gen is that people are questioning next-gen games. People would be generally surprised at the gameplay level of quality for next-gen titles and how close it'll be to bullshots of current-gen games.

I hope that rendered cutscenes are a thing of a past.

I was hoping the tearing was an artifact of the Gametrailer video, sad to read other people had it too. Hoping it'll get fixed, but not a large amount of confidence in that.

I think RE5 still looks amazing, and that came out back in 2008. The games of today can and will look even better, even if they don't match up to bullshots exactly.

Eh, the whole point of most of the presentations is to make something sparkle in people's eyes first before showing them gameplay. They did that. But I do understand that what gameplay they showed for Killzone was pretty uninteresting, but then again most stage demos are because they're played so that 2 year olds can understand what's going on.

The Watch_Dogs demo was kind of cool though, it just loses a bit of flair knowing the same exact game and gameplay is capable and will be available on current gen consoles.

Don't look at the demos, look at the specs. You'll get an idea of what to expect. Developers have created some amazing games on the PS3 and 360 and they'll do the same on their successors. Maybe it'll take a few years, but we will definitely see something impressive.

I think we've gotten to a point where it's hard to impress anymore. I think PC gamers got to that point a long time ago. They enjoy low end games like League of Legends, WoW, Minecraft, and high end games like Crysis, Skyrim, etc. As long as it's aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it's fine.

I think console games have finally arrived at that point. It's literally hard to make a shitty looking game. I hope developers use this to make interesting experiences, rather than trying to push systems to the metal.

Never forget guys, PS3 had no games, but PS4 is not real, it's cgi. When you'll be playing it, it will be a video sent by Gakai to make you believe you're playing it.

As for the Killzone demo...

Sony learned their lesson with CGI fakeouts. What you saw there is what you'll get, and even better with the last minute spec bump and more time in the oven.

Only Capcom's showing was dubious at the PS3 conference, but even then I don't doubt that was ingame cutscene rendered on next-gen targeted boxes.

Killzone was clearly real

Deep down in-engine, but nobody can tell how the final product will look, nevause everything was staged and not interactive.

Guess what? The average PS4 game in 2-3 years is going to beat the shit out of practically everything you saw yesterday.

They may have been bullshots for PS4 launch titles, but developers (AKA naughty dog) will find new ways to make us cream our pants.

I don't really share in the enthusiasm about Deep Down. Yeah it looked amazing but I don't see the finished product looking nearly that good and dynamic, and I'm not sure that they're going to be able to pull of the promise shown in the video.

Something like Watch Dogs looks more like an actual videogame and the visuals aren't the focus -- the gameplay is, and that's what excites me about it. I think the visuals should compliment the game and not be the centerpiece of excitement.

And they may pull off that level of promise shown in the Deep Down demo. I'm not in any position to say one way or the other. But even if they do, there's still the gameplay that has to be proven above the visuals. All I saw was target visuals with a fake HUD. Tells me absolutely nothing about the game.

I'd love to be proven otherwise and I have high hopes for the game, but I'm not going to be suckered into the excitement just because this early target footage was impressive.

UE4: Realtime in-engine
Knack: Gameplay
Killzone: Gameplay
Infamous: In-engine trailer
Watchdogs: Gameplay
Deep Down: In-engine (didn't believe it at first until a saw 1080p version) Fake HUD was hilarious though
Agni: WTF why are you showing the same trailer again?
Destiny: Gameplay/in-game

People need to realize that this is not the PS3 reveal. None of the trailers were CGI, meaning they are much more indicative of what we can expect to see in PS4 games.

Killzone 4 was legit, live gameplay.

I know killzone was real, did you see how poorly the guy aimed? If it was fake that guy would have had a lot more accurate shots.

Source? Or is that just your opinion?

har. what's funny is the pc screenshot thread is full of downsampling from resolutions that you'd get 15fps on a high end card. people want to believe they can play games with no aliasing. it's like an aspirational thing

Honestly, I really wouldn't want to be the guy playing the game at such an event!

It's mostly full of screenshots without aliasing at highly playable resolutions.

Well, Sony did that for PS2 and PS3, so why not showing bullshot/target render that will never be meet again.
If some people think it's what game will looks like that mean mission complete for Sony.

I completely agree with this. Even if the vids are good representations, the trailers just don't excite me. I'll still probably get all the consoles, but my excitement is no where near close to what it was in 2006.
