Buying Old Apple Products and Why I Do It

So, now that I have posted some evidence... do you guys still want to know what my impressions will be after using the 2010 products for a week?

Okay, i'm out of the Apple ecosystem, but...
A five year old laptop straight-up struggling with browsing?
Is this the reality for Apple users? Are there timebombs or something inside the things?
I mean, i've got a 2008 CPU in one of the computers at home (i7-920, though) and the thing is a goddamn lightning.
My samsung laptop that's before 2010 (But i can't find the model atm, it's at work) is also a lightning, admittedly running on linux.

You can't compare a fucking low powered core 2 duo from 2008 vs an i7 from the same year (which is still a beast today).
Your i7 is probably still faster then most, if not all, laptop CPUs on the market right now...

honestly? ... not really. i think there's plenty of people who have old laptops. No idea what you could bring to the table.

Unless you rode a horse, of course, but that's also been covered :/

afaik there is no GSM/CMDA revision. There was one specifically made for verizon, and yes, it had the antenna construction that the 4S also used. The GSM iPhone 4(no S) didn't undergo any antenna redesign, contrary to conspiracy theories.

  • iPhone 4 (N90ap)(iPhone3,1) the main GSM variant with the faulty antenna.
  • iPhone 4 (N90bap)(iPhone3,2), newer edition, 8gb, with a revised antenna.
  • iPhone 4 (N92ap)(iPhone3,3) the newer, GSM/CMDA non-sim variant that has a revised dual cellular antenna

For a 1440x900 display? Best trackpad in the world? Best keyboard? Thin and light? Yeah, it's worth it to me for the brand alone.

When you want to go Apple.. this is the way to do it cheaply. :)

that could be the only explanation. There are so many phone and laptop that are better option for those price range.

This is partially the reason. The main reason is that I personally felt that 2010 had the strongest product line. I loved the designs of the products of that time more than those of today.
With iPhone 4, I don't have a massive brick in my pocket. HATE the large smartphone trend.

I am also the guy who USED to own the clamshell iBook G3, Newton eMate 300, and PowerMac G3. I said this was my first mac, that is untrue if you look at it from that stand point.

Go with a 4S man. Best 3.5" you can buy. Why get the regular 4? Even if the 4S came out post-Steve it is clearly something he was overseeing.

Was referring to the GSM/CMDA revision, it had a different antenna design, there was also a third revision released in 2011.

Batterygate (4S), Scuffgate (5) and bendgate (6+) were minor incidental annoyances compared to the very real technical faults in the design of the iPhone 4 antenna. It could be replicated on any one of those phones.

Antennagate as an Apple only problem was BS. It was poor design but was common and still is for many phones. My Nokia at the time specifically told me how to hold it avoiding the antenna in the manual.. Yet Apple got the whole "You aren't holding it right" meme.

while we're at it, how good is a 2014 MacBook Air guys? Can I easily dual boot windows on it???
I'd use it for school, word processing, excell, PowerPoint (basically school stuff), and basic Internet stuff like YouTube, message boards, Skype, etc. VERY little photoshop. Do places sell the 2013 airs new? Is there much of a difference?

Now THIS I didn't know. That's pretty awesome. Maybe I will use the app store after all.

It runs fine on iOS5 appstore on an old touch I own. And I looked it up, Apple changed the way they did it so updates for old OSs are still available for them.

However it is possible though unlikely that the apps themselves will be broken based on not being able to connect to their servers.

iOS apps still work for almost everything though:Facebook, Pandora, Google Maps, Twitter, Spotify, and a bunch of others I tested still work. So you should be good if you don't expect updated apps.

well i ride it to work, of course.

lol the air screen is so bad in direct sunlight. childgrime everywhere. ;(
Omfg, this thread delivered so hard.

I don't think anyone outside of sensationalists claimed it was an Apple exclusive problem. The iPhone 4 was however the to-date most successful and high profile phone of theirs though (due to the tech jump, redesign and whatnot) and it was by comparison more popular in the media and drowned out the competition.

So okay, MacBook Air will be running Snow Leopard. Can't I get away with iMovie 09, Garageband, iPhoto? I can do those things, right? Can't I use mail and safari still? iTunes for movies and music? Play old games like EVE?

I would have sold you my 2010 macbook pro (mid i5 2.4ghz) for 400 OP LOL. It still runs like a champ in every day usage.

I can cancel my MBA purchase for that. It's in the year 2010 so it'd be nice.

Not sure if serious but I'd gladly take that offer.

I would not recommend an iphone 4 for anyone at this point in time, unless it still has the original old OS.... it is mind numbingly slow at any smartphone related task if it is updated. But ofc if you just want to use it as a phone then fine i guess(that works most of the time), but battery has to be changed and an unresposive homebutton is also something to watch out for.

Humor me, how is the iPhone 4, iPad 1, and 2010 MacBook Air better than the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and 2011 MacBook Air?

All 3 are massive improvements over 2010.

Not to mention iPad 1 was a terrible device. Didn't get good till 2. And MBA had awful battery life till 2011. iPhone 4S is literally the 4 but with better specs.

Op, I know you're not outright saying it, but it feels like you're really taking pride in using old shit. You're one of those people that would barge in on a conversation about upgrading smartphones and proudly proclaim how you're still using a 4, just to one-up everyone else. But mark my words, you'll be sitting there with you're phone lagging with most websites, email browsing, and general OS sluggishness that is crippled by it's limited ram and the 3g signal, while similarly getting shortchanged on the Air's value and think, "was saving $100-$300 bucks by getting arbitrarily old hardware because reasons really worth it?".

This is stuff that is supposed to last you an additional half decade, it's worth investing the additional couple of hundred for vastly superior hardware for use in the long run. Certainly more worth it than the cool points you think get for voluntarily sticking with old hardware.

Well, I have always heard that Macs keep their value and perform well for a long time.

Now I read that a less than 5 year old mac for $500 is waaay too much and that it is going to run like crap.

The iPhone 4 is fine, but I agree I was jipped on the MacBook Air. See the video above ^

I tried to cancel the order. Doubtful they will be able to cancel it but we shall see!

This thread has taught me that my Apple products will still have high resale value for some people when it's time to sell.

They are famous for that. I can get easily get $600 for the air I bought for $1000 in 2011. Part of the reason the Apple tax isn't quite as high as people think.

You say that now, but your time is valuable. I had the 4, and near the end of it's life the sluggish, stuttery performance really took a toll on my patience. I can't imagine how it will handle today. It certainly isn't worth it, especially when you can get a vastly superior iphone for free. And for $50 more, an even better phone than that! The inconvenience of spending a measly $50 bucks for a device you plan on using for 3-4 years is nothing compared to inadequacies of an old phone's hardware using a slower 3G signal. Seriously, reconsider.

Well, I have always heard that Macs keep their value and perform well for a long time.

No, it's specifically that air. Apple computers with real 'oomph' to their specs tend to compete in performance much longer. I can still competently use my MBP from 2007 in an emergency.

Well they do hold their value, as demonstrated by the OP. As for perform, depends on what you buy. Many people are still happy with 2010 Pros, 2011 Airs, iPad 2s and the rest. 2011 was a year of huge improvements for consumer Macs. Less so for the Pro line.

i would have went with a moto g rocking android 5.1. it's a much better proposition than an iphone 4 which will stutter and lag on the latest ios, and have a really worn battery.

as for the macbook, i would have went with any other modern $500 machine. better processors, battery life, touch screens, resolution, integrated graphics, webcam, as well as usb 3.0, bt 4.0, and hdmi.

"Well, everything keeps on asking me to update, and saying some websites are unsafe. And iTunes is super slow. And my phone is really slow. It's kinda slow loading even craigslist, and gifs kill it. It gets really hot sometimes, and the battery barely lasts a few hours. So I bought a new battery, which now means I could have bought something much newer for the same price............... but 2010!"

If his plan was to get the last products under Steve he failed as well.

iPad 2 in 2011 came out under Jobs. In fact Jobs led that press conference. Know what else came out under Jobs time as CEO? The 2011 MacBook Air. As for the iPhone 4S? Yes Jobs retired in August of 2011 before passing away that fall. However the iPhone 4S was already in mass production prior to him retiring.

You want the last products fully finished and released under Steve Jobs reign as CEO You are off by a year.
