Call of Duty: WWII - Beta Impressions

So is the SMG problem a "if you can't beat them, join them" situation? Is the only fun way to play with an SMG or do you think it will balance out once people get used to stuff?

It certainly seems like the only way to do well is join them.

Type 100 for the win.

I consider myself a pretty competent COD player, with a near 1:1 KD ratio over the course of many COD games, but I am TERRIBLE at this game for some reason. I'm not sure what it is, maybe I just suck now. The aiming feels odd for some reason and the game was choppy. It's probably that I just suck now, but something about the game is off for me.

Same. In iw I have 1.2 kd but here last match I had 10 kills and 30 deaths like three times more than anyone else in my team.

Honestly, I don't think SMGs are the one-and-only choice. They're probably going to be the most popular and effective choice due to the map size, but the assault rifles are still good contenders. The M1 Garand and M1A1 are reliable 2-3 shot kills, but obviously work better if you can put a bit of distance between yourself and opponents. The STG44 is pretty powerful and the full auto nature means it'll do better against SMGs while still being more reliable at long range. I think you can reliably hold your own with an AR.

The only weapons I'd say are useless are shotguns. LMGs and snipers are alright, not the most effective due to the smaller map size (in the beta, at least). While I've gotten some good performance out of the MG-15 LMG and Commonwealth sniper, I do feel at a disadvantage when using them.

Edit, here's how I'd place it:

Aachen: ARs, LMGs, SMGs and snipers
Ardennes Forest: SMGs (this map is bad)
Gibraltar: AR and SMGs, sniper rifles do alright
Operation Breakout: varies because of changing objectives
Point du Hoc: SMGs

There has to be a way to create a CoD game that doesn't include quick scoping, and head glitching to the point where I can only see the very top of the guys helmet, but on his screen he has a completely clear view of me to shoot me...

SMG/AR balance will hopefully get some tweaks...

LMGs feel very useless, at least in TDM...unless there are going to be some more open, larger maps at release where you can really take advantage of the bi-pods, why even have them?...

I play HC TDM with my friends, so that will help balance out the weapons to an extent because AR's will probably become 1 shot kills out to a pretty long range, so that's where you'll outgun SMG's...

Quick scoping is a damn plague in CoD... It has existed for so long and I am tired of getting killed by a quick scoper when I put in half a clip into him at close range.

I do not think SMG's are overpowered like many seem to think. I didn't do great with them and definitely lost plenty of gun fights in close to medium range to the STG and got smoked up close with shotguns which is expected of course. Speaking of shotguns I am not usually a shotgun player but I had a ton of fun with the first shotgun with incendiary rounds, so fun hip firing and setting people on fire. They do not need to nerf it, they are fine and you are still at a huge disadvantage at distance and need to change the way you play. I didn't do amazing I mostly went even or plus a couple but it was still fun and I could care less about kd.

Question: what am I missing when you rank up a Division? I forget what it is called but for example the shotgun Division (last one), I got it to rank 2 and it said I could bring a lethal and a tactical but it would not let me choose one of each?

I think there's a bug with the division bonuses unlocking properly, try changing division (say to Mountain) in the class and then changing back to Expeditionary.

Thanks I will try, hopefully they are aware and fix if not im sure it will be sorted out on release.

Many thought that a return to BOTG would mean all the Scufs would disappear, but this has not been the case.

Aachen is barely okay, but man, something doesn't feel right about that map. Sledgehammer sure is committed to making sure SMG users never have to use any other weapon type. Plus Aachen was put into the rotation in place of Ardennes Forest, the only map I've enjoyed.
I don't get that line of thought. Jumping & dropshotting has been a main stay in the series since CoD4. Jumpshotting more than anything has always been prevalent, especially on BO2 where it was extremely effective. Same with quickscoping.

Ardennes is back in the rotation, thankfully. Also starting to realize that Aachen is way more AR (mainly STG) dominated. Very easy to hold down corridors & cover the midlane.

I played COD4, WaW, MW2, and BO1 when they were new on the PS3. I remember rarely seeing jumpshooting until BO2 when it started getting more prevalent, but it was still nothing like WW2. Dropshotting was always a thing, yeah.

Indeed, & they're not going to remove both aspects from the series just because either. Dropshotting in both CoD4 & WaW were both very good.

Think I'm ready to put myself in the camp of people who have had their fill of the game from the beta.

I think it's OK. Just OK. I don't like Aachen at all which makes it 50/50 on the maps so far. Already feel done with war mode.

I know they're separate games and I've always maintained they could and should co-exist for different audiences, but I've been playing Battlefield 1 this week to break up the two beta weekends and that is NOT a comparison which favours COD at all. Think I'm genuinely done with this style of multiplayer.

Aachen with a 100 kill limit is a new kind of hell in gaming. Seriously this is one of the worst maps in the history of the series. Most of the rounds I've played on it have ended up a slaughterhouse with half (or more) of one team bailing well before the 10 minutes expired. It seems to bring out all the weakest elements of how this particular game plays in an insipid, unappealing level design.

At any rate I got the pop up "did you have fun?" and responded with a resounding NO. Not sure if it's way too late to make some adjustments to the design of that map but it absolutely sucks.

Didn't know that was a thing. Does it allow you to provide context (ie. shiity maps)?

Was thinking to myself during my last round on Aachen, I'd love to see the data they're getting back from those prompts..

Looks like they're sending out extra beta codes to give to your friends. Just got an email with two extras (checking with some friends before I give them away here).

I think my opinion is the complete opposite of GAF. I'm absolutely loving the beta. It feels like old school COD to me. Took a couple of hours to learn the maps. Since them, I'm consistently doing well. I had to break myself from how COD has been played since AW and learn to slow down. There is a pretty significant delay in sprint out time so youre going to die nonstop if you run around and try to ADS kill. The only exception is if you run SMGs with airborne division and hip fire. The one thing I do agree on is that the new map is my least favorite.

So... are you guys going to explain why these maps are so bad or are we supposed to read your minds?

It's been covered to death. There are WAY too many different paths leading to constantly getting killed from behind or one of the many other angles you can get killed from at any time. It's stupid.

Same as past couple games, for me at least. Incredibly small, incredibly cramped, multiple entry points to every area. They cater to a very specific type of gameplay, a very chaotic type that I just don't enjoy very much.

Compare that to maps like Derail in MW2, and it's a clear shift towards smaller, shoebox-style maps. I blame Nuketown.

It's weird but I think the maps are the highlights of the beta. I haven't played the new one yet though.

I like how they're small, great for SMG's which is what I use if the shotguns are garbage in a COD game (they are).

2 garbage ass maps.

Sweet Lord, the latency is horrendous today. I'll empty a magazine into someone, and nothing. Then they, on my end, two shot me.

I mean there are small maps in this just like any other CoD game. Shipment from CoD4 or Dome from WaW anyone?

Multiple entryways into buildings has been a thing since as long as I've been playing the games. Should I name some maps in CoD4 that have buildings with 2+ entrances or can be assaulted from multiple angles? Beloved maps I may add.

There are also medium to larger size maps. Aachen is really not that different from a map like Crossfire from CoD4. Also most of these are three to four lane maps that we've been seeing for years now. I'm not opposed to those kinds of maps, but I prefer some variety, with a mix of symmetrical and non-symmetrical maps.

Anyone else getting a 'disconnected from server' message as soon as a match ends? The scoreboard shows up & I get booted right before I can see the lobby.

Been happening for my last 20 matches or so, straight

You asked why I don't like them, I told you haha. If there are also some larger maps that we just haven't seen yet, then great. But even as far as smaller maps go, these ones don't stand out to me as fantastic. Peak small map to me is Hijacked from BLOPS 2.

I just got DC'd during a game. That combined with the horrendous latency, I've had a tough go of it today. lol

Fair enough, so let me ask this then. Did you like the maps in CoD4? Any particular you like and don't like?

I actually didn't play much MP in COD4. I played the campaign, but I only really got into MP with MW2 (which along with BLOPS 2 and AW, are probably my most played COD games)

At least I'm not the only one haha. But yeah, been having latency issues on & off as well. First weekend was smoother for me tbh

So what's the consensus on the best SMG right now?

Also how do you put the silencer on it?
Press right on the Dpad to attach or detach the silencer, but you can only equip silencers if you're using the Airborne division.

Best SMG's are probably the PPSH, followed by the Type 100 imo. Steady aim as an attachment in this game is also incredible by the way.

Cool, so let me change my question to MW2 then. Let's say top 3 maps you like and dislike if you can think of that many.

Are you just trying to find counterpoints to why I should think WWII is a better game? I don't have the energy or fucks to give for that debate, haha.

But since I like making lists;

Like:
Derail
Terminal
Highrise
Favela

Dislike:
Skidrow
Karachi
Rundown

I also don't like Rust, but as a one-off super tiny map, it's provided some fun.

Beta was fun but COD is so stale to me at this point, it's like eating twice-reheated leftovers you've been eating at every meal for a week. Series needs a shot in the arm on the level that COD4 was.

Or they are bumper jumping. I mean for fucks sake Sledgehammer said they would add a bumper jumper layout for the final game. They encourage this shit. Makes the game unplayable.

Thanks, forgot about bumper jumper, as it wasn't there in the beta, and wasn't added for a month or two in BO3 I believe.

I'll never get this. I mean, why select Domination if you don't want to cap points?

If you're in a party, or with people that know what they're doing, and you hold two points, it's free kills as the other team is just trapped in their spawn; as long as no one really pushes too far in (or someone on the opposing team manages to get out). So you just know where the team is coming from. More killstreaks, don't have to worry as much about getting flanked.

TDM on the other hand, people are just spawning inside your ass.

So what's the consensus on the best SMG right now?

Also how do you put the silencer on it?

I think you've got to be the class that has SMGs for default, so that's infantry I believe? Left on the dpad.

Nope, I'm not here to do any such thing. But it's nice to know where people are coming from.

Also, I don't even like WWII that much. It's the first CoD I'm planning on skipping. I was pretty meh about it since the reveal.

Thanks for that.

Do you guys really think they're going to remove quick scoping after it's been a thing since CoD2? Bit optimistic if you ask me, they could definitely nerf it though. I can imagine it'll be even more popular if they include bolt-actions with iron sights in the full game.

I've never cancelled a preorder before because I only pre-order games I know I'm going to play and play a lot of, like every other CoD I've had, or Destiny and Destiny 2. I don't pre-order every game I buy but CoD is usually a safe bet for me, I enjoy the core gameplay of CoD.

This game however is just not clicking with me. It is so laggy or clunky for me, just not smooth at all. Movement, aiming, shooting, everything is just not registering when I make the click on my controller. It's just off. I always get lag comp games that are atrocious, but in this game it's like that for every game. Every game is clunky.

After last weekends beta I went back and played IW on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, which I haven't played in 2 months or so. It was so buttery smooth I couldn't believe it. The movement, the aiming and shooting, everything was smooth and responsive. Complete opposite again when I played WWII again last night and today.

I know spawns have been given pretty good praise in this beta but maybe I'm the opposite. I think they are playing it too safe, at least in Domination mode which is almost all I play. You always spawn way behind your A/C flag so everytime you die, it's a slog to get back to the action or back to the fight for the B flag.

Graphics are another complaint. IW looked super clean and crisp and has some color. This game, which I suppose is going for it's set piece and time period is bland, which is realistic, I get it. The problem is specific to me in that I play on a 110" projector screen so by default things are not as crisp as they normally would be on a 1080P screen. So it is difficult for me to see the enemy at times. Again, not necessarily a fault of the game, but more on my end. But even with that said, the graphics don't blow me away. A funny thing I laugh at each time I play WAR mode is at the start when you are on the attacking team and they show your team jumping out of the truck to get ready, the camera pans down at the ground and you just see yours and your teammates boots hitting the ground and running away. The funny thing is, the ground textures are pretty bad so I'm not sure why they focus the camera on that. Just seemed odd to me to highlight something that doesn't even look that great.

Then there is the customization options which are pretty limited compared to past CoDs. Not much to say here as I'm just not sure the scaling down of customization would keep me in the game as long.

Maps I'm not going to comment on as I don't really know how to judge a good map from a bad map in detail. I guess they seem OK to me. I do get shot in the back quite a bit though.

I hate quick scoping sniping, I hate how shotty's seem to lag my game down like crazy and I don't get how they could make LMG's so bad. Guns could use some major work before release.

The last thing is how unfinished this game still seems compared to other CoD beta's. I said it earlier in this thread so I won't repeat too much, but things do not feel like they are working correctly yet. End game screens, etc. Getting kicked out of lobbies when the match is done. Everything still seems early in development and could use a lot more polish.

So with that said, I'll finish out the beta and play this weekend some more. But does anyone know if you can cancel digital pre-orders from Best Buy without any hassle?

Hey man, I'm in agreement with you. Learning the maps is like 85% of the battle. It feels like old COD to me, slow, no kill steaks everywhere. I'm loving war mode and hard point. This is going to be my PvP game for the next year.

the more I play the more I really love the small maps and boots on the ground gameplay. everything has a nice, tight feel. I just wish the maps weren't full of so many routes. simple design goes a long way for me.

War mode seems ok, seems rushed with the voices at the end of each win or loss which cheapens the mode compared to bf1.

Map design is horrendous so far, why are all modern cod games maps mostly circles?!

Castle from Waw, not a circle and had plenty of open distance views
Airfield, again not a circle shape at all and big
Cliff side, same again
I could go on...

Give me Waw remastered or MW2, cod maps should not be quake maps.
