Can we talk about the PlayStation 5's size....

Well just did a check on my older version of the Corndell 1273 Nimbus - that we got free a year back from Brother/Sister in-law when they moved house and were going wall mounted and integrated shelves - and it will fit nicely with hand space around the side.

My bigger issue is: when on earth are more pre-orders opening up on Amazon.co.uk? - shakes fist at Sony and hopes to get in at day one.

I have got my Subwoofer on the left hand-side of the cabinet, so I might just even things up and place the PS5 on the right hand-side - stood upright - for maximum cooling.

It would be interesting to know what the power draw on PS5 was while the Demon's souls game was playing (in the trailer), as even with me retiring the PS4, I suspect my UPS that hides under the bottom draw might not have enough supply left - even if I place the 300watt Soundbar on the unprotected sockets.
Put your sub on the ground, and preferably in a corner of the room. You'll thank me later. MUCH better bass response and extension.

It has the most advanced designed SSD and the GPU runs over 2ghz. It needs to be cooled.

The size should shut people up who think the PS5 doesn't sustain 2.23ghz. If it didn't and mostly stayed below 2ghz, it wouldn't need specific cooling and size.

Yeah but they could have gone about it completely differently, their design 100% has a blower cooler in it, they're never quiet, never...

Sorry but PS5 is ridicolous. And the fact that you need a stand is the icing on the cake. PS4 was actually pretty sleek and smooth and now they want us to go back to PS3 era.

You can argue exclusives, SSD, power, etc.... But its a monster, badly shaped and designed (looks) console.

It feels like a different division or group of people within the company developed this system.

Earlier I read this. I thought it was a subjective matter of opinion.

But I do think that the PS5 will look much better in a living room than a PC.

But after seeing real pictures, even the ugliest PC would look miles better than the ps5. No wonder Sony was hiding it all this time. It's like that ugly girl you don't want anyone to know that your baggin'. If you are willing to put something that big & hideous in your living room, you can't say shit about PC being big.

I remember people talking shit about how HUGE the new Xbox is. How no one can fit it into their entertainment system, especially in Japan, where all the apartments are so small.

We had a picture of it in some engineer's hands at the plant (maybe it was just the case).
We know that you will need to re-enforce your floors before you get your PS5.
People don't realize that the reason preorders were all sold out quickly, is that the police are buying them up by the bulk. They are using them as bullet proof armour and bullet proof vests for their squad cars and personal.

Elon Musk bought a few as well to send into orbit, to beam wifi 6 down to earth, with it's humongous size. Wifi 6 is the new 5G.

You don't know anything about their design goals or what type of cooling it has.

SX has a stand you can't remove. Laying it sideways......now that looks ridiculous.

It is indeed enormous. Bigger than I ever expected. But for me the heinous two tone color scheme is more offputting than the physical size.

I think the size is why it's designed the way it is, with some flair and all. Pretty sure the designers were commissioned to give it a look that could somehow try hide its dimensions and weight a bit, hence the "sporty" look, the wings etc. Not that I'm a fan. I much prefer a minimalistic, efficient design.

Most people have units like this which don't have the tallest shelves. This is Tom Warren's. Most people are going to have to put the Series X on top. The PS5 is far easier to fit in a traditional shelf than the XSX. No question.

MOST people, I find that hard to believe... that's an abnormally small shelf spaced for height.

Fair point... I quite dislike this design. I said it was perhaps the ugliest console I have ever seen, but that does not mean part of the volume taken is not due to artistic flare (same shitty decisions about in devices like MacBook Pro, form over function and all that jazz)... not that it matters that much sure.

Volume = 10.8Ă—3.8Ă—12.8 = 525.312 inches3

You don't measure volume of curves, you measure it with rectangularity. The rectangular area it will consume.

No. YOU measure it with rectangularity.
What this information gives us - nobody knows.

Maybe we can estimate if it fits somewhere we want to place it or not, but in any case we need huge open space around both of the consoles for heat dissipation, so nothing again.

It doesn't "matter" but everyone wants something aesthetic pleasing

Yeah, i looks big and hideously ugly. I was mocking the size and shape of XSX before the PS5 design was revealed, and I could never ever imagine that the PS5 would look even worse! Much worse. I really hope it can fit inside my cupboard and that it won't get too hot.. but I can always remove the back of the cupboard to get some airflow. That fugly thing is not going to ruin my decor, fuck.

No its been designed to run very fast, have very fast caches and silicon bandwidth L2 to L0 to feed a 10 CU in each of the 4 shader arrays, we can see the performance it works nicely and those CU are being fed fast and efficiently.

Lets see how XSX works, how does the 4K ray tracing look ?

I don't mind the size and kinda like the shape, but the color! Totally doesn't fit within my equipment.
Fucking white!

Higher clocks needs proper cooling ,ps5 teardown will answer that "why is so big" ,and of course will raise new questions. But i don't get it ,why the hell this white covers needs to be that big.If they was much closer to console body, just slightly to cover vents, will look better. And I don't like that twisted shape, just curved like PS3 fat will be better looking.Anyway ,already pre ordered one.

No, you measure anything based upon the highest and lowest points because the storage entity i.e. the cabinet is always going to conform to a square of rectangle.

It's fucking huge, get over it fanboy.

I know for a fact based upon that design language that it's got a blower cooler in it IF NOT two of them.

If I was buying one I'd just chuck it behind the tv unit out of sight. Controllers are bluetooth & no optical drive so no need to ever see or touch it.

Fat PS3 was lovely. I actually still have it, the 60GB with PS2 BC.

But my point is: we got a slick PS4 and we got a jet engine.

I remember people talking shit about how HUGE the new Xbox is.

True, but people were talking shit about the XSX being a "box", and now they are talking shit about the XSS' design as well. Let's face it: Microsoft thinks in terms of static boxes, Sony believes in movement. Hence the blocky boxes of XBox One forward, and the rounded movement design from Sony starting the the fat PS3.

The real question is whether this thing is as fucking noisy as the PS4...

And this is probably the reason why the PS5 is big. We'll know soon enough with the tear down.

I can stack both of these beautiful consoles on top of each other with an S on top in mine. I guess I haven't yet "ungraded" to a lil bish cramped entertainment center. We've had the same one for 10+ years.

Am I really the only weird one who can appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of every console released, be it by Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo?

That 26cm thickness towards the back edge is what disturbs the whole proportions if you ask me, if it was like 10-12cm thick (thin?) across the board it would've been one of the slickest consoles design ever, but it is what it is, hopefully the Slim model will be more elegant when it shows up in 3 years or so.

Not 4K but should roughly answer your question. Quake 2 RTX with path tracing (better than standard RT) on a PC at 1080p = unviable, but Full Path Tracing on a Series X playing Minecraft at 1080p, very do-able. Before you knock it "because Minecraft be simple" then listen for about 30 secs in from the link "This is a deceptive use case, you see Minecraft and think simplistic visuals, but what they're doing here is extemely demanding".

You can't deny even at 1080p it makes the game look like its been remastered or re-skinned just with DXR alone.

Its 1080p / blocks and not actual gameplay, maybe we will see something on Valhalla.

This is what I have and my TV is bigger then the one displayed here, thing is the PS5 will fit at the end on my TV but the Series X? not gonna happen

I guess it's just me but I've never cared about how big something is. The only time size has ever mattered to me was with the GameCube, which I thought was awesome since it was so easy to pick up and pack. I don't care about how big the PS5 is. I care about what games it will offer.

I think the design sucks but I don't really care much about that either.
