Captain America: Civil War SPOILER Thread - #TeamThanos

One of the small things I wished was acknowledged more is that Scott Lang tells Wanda she's great. It's a small touch but nice considering her character arc is "everyone fears me".

I love seeing the split here over who's right, Tony or Steve. It really shows how well they crafted the scenario that there's no obvious right side. Also, it was nice that the various characters showed different degrees of certainty about their choice; Wanda abstained, Widow was wishy-washy, even Tony looked like he had doubts by the end (as well he should).

Personally, I started leaning toward Tony's side - obviously the team needs some sort of world community endorsement, at least, if not direct oversight.

By the end of the film, though, I was on Cap's side. The oversight was immediately counter-productive, and only resulted in a kill order of an (at least arguably) innocent man and an arrest order for selfless heroes who are only trying to help.

In a non-entertainment scenario, obviously just more talking and negotiation would be needed to figure it all out, but in a movie scenario, boy, did they nail the whole thing.

Pretty stupid to do if people haven't seen it. Giant Man was one of the hypest moments for me (and something I should have seen coming but was still surprised at seeing nonetheless).

people that really care about stuff like that saw it opening weekend. these commercials are to get the stragglers or to draw people in for multiple viewings

It only

Got Steve and Tony off on their own, which was necessary in a CA movie
Got everyone else thrown in jail, which was necessary to give Tony enough cause to break the accords, and for him to learn about Siberia
Demonstrated exactly what 'catastrophe' was when they're all fighting each other, which was necessary on a thematic level
Gave the world Giant-Man and Spider-Man, which was the most necessary thing ever in the history of cinema

Steve and Tony could have ended up in Siberia alone without such fluff. Why did Ant-Man need to be in jail? Does Tony even know who this guy is? The issue with their powers was collateral damage and no body actually got hurt at the airport. Your last point illustrates how actually pointless the scene was or how it could have been handled in a much better story oriented way.

Like, why even bring Antman in? He serves zero purpose in the movie besides going big. I watched it again today and it doesn't hold up well on repeat viewings or when you try to add MCU logic into it.

But Spider-Man, though! :(

You can be this idiotic about any scene in any movie ever. ANY movie scene can be re-written to accomplish the intentions of the scene in question under different circumstances. The only scenes that are truly worthless are those that don't add anything to a movie, either in terms of narrative or entertainment value. The airport scene fulfills both no matter how much you delude yourself that into thinking it serves no purpose.

Just curious, how?

Man. My short answer. Dad was murdered as a kid. "It sucked" is an understatement. Like I said, you might walk in with a certain mind set. Pops housed about 20 illegal Mexican immigrants on his land. They knew who did it and said nothing, for obvious reasons. I'm leaving it there. Guy has been dealt with, btw.

Before I reply to this, why do you always drop ellipses after your last sentence? It looks pretty weird, man. :p

I love attention..

Back on-topic, I definitely understand why Cap neglected to tell Tony. It wasn't for a noble reason, but a selfish one, but reasonably so. Bucky means the world to Cap. He was not only his best friend, but the one remaining connection to his past life. It's natural that Cap wants to protect him at all costs, even for a dude of his moral rigidity.

And while I COMPLETELY understand that, truly, it fucks with me on a personal tip. I've been waiting for Steve to be upfront about this. Sadly, it went the way it did.

I understand that "waaaawaaaa" is an ok response for some. It just hit close to home for me. Btw, I HATED The First Avenger and wasn't the biggest Cap fan. Winter Soldier changed my tune and made me sooo excited for this movie.

While I enjoyed it immensely, I just feel down about how that story played out. Just me, obviously.

And speaking of a "natural" reaction, I'll fucking merc ANYONE standing in front of me that had a hand LITERALLY in killing someone I love. Period. Sorry. Just me..

You're not actually writing anything that counters what I said. Do you even know why Ant-Man is at the airport? Neither do it. I guess to go Big or Go Home?

It's a really Alex Ross esque design.

Minus the edginess.

The costume doesn't physically exist yet though, right?

there are a few shots in Civil War where the suit is in fact real and not CG.

the suit is an amazing design accomplishment. In one scene it looks like Alex Ross, then in another it looks like Steve Ditko, and then out of nowhere it looks like Romita. I had a boner the entire time

If Steve didn't know it was Bucky why didn't he tell Tony at all? Telling your friend that his parents were murdered and not dead in an accident is rough, but not super rough to the point of keeping it a secret for near two years for no real reason. If he knew it was Bucky it might sort of give him reason to not say the truth, because he wanted to try and protect Bucky even with him not around.

he knew it was Bucky, he was lying when he told Tony that

Wait really? When?

I'm pretty sure there are a few close up shots during his fight with cap that are real (with CG eyes obviously)

and when he's on the ground with his mask half off, the close up shots are real and the suit is real. when the scene cuts to him putting his mask back on its all cg though (not sure why)

there could be more, I think there's more non-cg spidey than people realize.

What does it matter when you're incapable of reevaluating your position?

Ant-Man is there thematically as a parallel to Peter. Both are relatively inexperienced, both are swept up by their admiration for Steve and Tony respectively. Both show that their respective leaders are willing to take advantage of that naivety to accomplish their own goals.

Ant-Man is there from a narrative stand point because Steve needed more muscle, because it would be much easier for Wanda, Clint, and Scott to get into Germany than for Steve to smuggle Bucky out. If you bothered to pay attention, you'd have picked this up when Steve and Sam are discussing how to get Bucky out of Germany. Steve says "We're on our own," and Sam responds with "Maybe not. I know a guy," referring to Scott Lang.

Ant-Man is there from an entertainment point of view because he's fucking awesome and a great way to leave an impression on an audience.

Does that adequately answer your question? Why did you you see this movie twice when all you do is whine about it?

Were you paying attention?

Falcon and Steve were discussing how best to take down the five other Winter Soldiers in Siberia, and if Bucky's power is any indication, just Falcon, Steve, and Bucky wouldn't be enough to take all of them down. Ant-Man was brought in as reinforcements alongside Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye to make the trip to Siberia, but obviously Team Tony got in the way.

Dude, this is basic as fuck.

Dude's the same as that BadAss2961 guy, just less obvious. I'd ignore it if I were you.

I really hope we get a breakdown on the VFX behind spider-man on the bluray or something. there's a lot of stuff going on there
I hope so too, but Marvel Blu-Rays are really light on content that isn't a gag reel or 10 minute documentary on the film production. Maybe in the art book there'll be an explanation.

Maybe even on The RPF, which is a replica prop forum where people fuckin' love the tiniest details and contact the costume designers for them.
