Carmack: Doom 4 will launch on 3DVDs/1 Blu Ray

I can't wait for this to come out.

Jesus fuck i think i'll postpone my pc upgrade just to get the latest tech for when it comes out.

Would love to know the ball park on PC specs. I'm guessing a quad core will be recommended.

Steam's servers are going to love this game. They're going to have to offer a pre-load if it's more than 20gb.

If they're 3 dual-layer DVDs on the PC that could top 50 gigs, depending on how compressed those install discs are. It's not unheard of for a single layer DVD to expand to close to 10 gigs after installation/decompression.

how come uncharted and killzone2 doesn't have mandatory install?

I admit I'm not up to date on all the reasons for PS3 installs or why some games do or don't need them. But with all that unique data, who knows?

Err, lets not bring the "360 holding Rage back" shit in here okay? It's a massive cluster fuck whenever people start arguing about that.

I'm really keen to see the level of detail they'll be able to pack into Doom 4 considering they're aiming for 30 fps, not 60 (like Rage).

I think it may very well be the most graphically stunning game we've yet seen when they lift the lid on it.... whenever that may be.

I wonder at what point a game is so big it's a detriment? I mean what if it wasn't 3 DVDs, but 3 blu-rays? Would a 150 gig installation put off PC gamers? I guess so. Would be a pretty epic game though! :D

from what i recall, they are going to something closer to doom 2; which means ultra fast firefights in maps happening 'outside' with lots of ennemies.

kickin rad, now to download some wads
I know you're being sarcastic, but there actually is a really good modern doom wad - Knee Deep in Zdoom. They basically create Doom ][ if ID had taken another 2 years to develop a proper sequel instead of shoving out an expansion pack.

I was impressed that encountering a new enemy type had the ability to scare/shock me. Well worth a play if you were a doom nut back in the day.

I hope you can get a blu-ray PC version :/

lol?

Also, I thought iD tech 5 was about better file compression with those mega textures? I'll be keeping my eye on this game. id's game designs have been sorely behind, but I'm hoping with the new talents they've hired, it will all be improved upon.

I played some of that just a few weeks ago or so, actually. It's pretty good, and it's amazing how far the Doom engine can be pushed, even able to run in Legacy.

It happens. When Blade runner shipped in 1997 it was 4 cds and the full install was 2 (Maybe 2.5?) gigs. At that time brand new pcs were shipping with 1.5 gigabyte hds. I remember reading the system requirements and thinking 2 gig free space for full install was a joke or a typo.
Of course, these days we don't even blink at 8gig usb keychains.

As with most things it's a case of "when something is there, you use it". If every 360 came with HDD, mandatory installs would have been common place too.

But with all that unique data, who knows?
If transfer speeds are an issue at constant 9MB/s, they will remain an issue(or get worse) at variable 6-15MB/s (12x DVD).
That said - with non-linear streaming you usually end up fighting seek-times, not transfer rates, and in that case a presence of HDD for caching(not installs) helps a lot more then optical disc speed.

OK, so I'm just starting to check the game out now and it looks great. I can't wait to see how it turns out on ps3. I didn't even know I was missing out on this : ) I need to keep up. Now if I just knew where the creepy, voo-doo doll avatars came from.

No no...you got that confused with Rape Me. Everyone makes that mistake with the midis.

Could've sworn that Smells like Teen Spirit was a part of Final Doom.

No? The riffs are similar but I'm pretttttty sure it was Teen Spirit. Oh well, that was like 15 years ago. :P

It was a joke...I wasn't much of a fan of Final Doom, oddly enough.

I understood some of that.

I dabbled in Final Doom for a bit, but by then, Quake was out.

Quake then took over my life for the next several years. Who remembers MPlayer?

For multi-disc 360 games, I wonder if there's a way you could HDD install the first two discs, and just keep the third disc in the tray to satisfy the 360 disc check requirement?

Can't wait for my first multi disc game this gen (not a fan of jrpgs). I loved switching discs on epic games back then, MGS1, the FFs, etc. those were the times.

Good idea. Listen to this man, id.

Is anyone really a fan of Final Doom, though?
I never got to play it when it was new, so when I got it in the id super pack on Steam I was hyped to play some more Doom 2 levels.

instead I wound up fucking hating revenants and hating the first half of it.

Wonder what he means when he says the PS3 is more difficult to work with, but gives them more headroom. Hopefully "more headroom" isn't technical lingo for "less AA and lower resolution textures" like it does for a lot of multiplatform devs ;/

I don't know about AA, but Carmack said Rage's "out of the way" textures will be less compressed on PS3 due to BD. It's the first 100% in house major id game since Doom 3.

I'm fairly certain Doom 4 will be a re-imagination of Doom 2 which it totally fine with me.

3 discs (360), 1 disc (PS3), no disc (PC).

Ooh, that would be cool.
Or more likely install discs 2 and 3, and keep disc 1 in the tray.

Doom 3 was a abomination. 99% of using your flashlight, nice game design there Tim Willits!

I'm not sure how much of this I'm allowed to quote, but Carmack also talked about his missteps with Doom 3.

Carmack in GI said:
"Doom 3 did wind up having this set of things we identified that were problems for people. It was a very dark game. we had to be very careful because every light you added cost on there, so we were always trying to only have two or three lights present on any given surface. I still look back and horribly regret the whole flashlight decision about not having it as a continuous thing. I was all paranoid about, 'Oh it's killing our frame rate. We've got performance issues,' and stuff like that."

Carmack in GI said:
"I decided to do an outdoor game - and that was one of the other knocks against Doom 3, is it was all tight, confined, indoors. Even when Quake 4 opened it up a little more, but still clearly it was an indoor engine. That's what id did; dark and indoors. We wanted to step away from that. We've opened it up so that we can do these vast, huge, open spaces with the big wastelands, and the vegetation, and the big mountains and all that stuff going on there, which we didn't have the capabilities to do before."

Note that he's talking about Rage, not Doom 4 in the above quote. He also says that he wishes id had done Doom 3 Xbox in-house (to ensure that it was on par with the PC version), that there is "no limit" to textures using their new engine, and that id tech 5 is being used in an upcoming Iphone project that "looks really freaking incredible".

I think Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil are really good shooters. In fact, I'm going through them now on some sort of id binge.

They are. It's just that this place seems to be riddled with stupidity.

I don't think Doom 3 is that bad either. The flashlight thing is dumb, and the game really gets boring in the final parts, but it's a good, if not "Doom good", shooter.
