D'oh! I'm stuck in HD-DVD land =(

I really need to get on top of saving enough for a PS3 if only for some of the awesome movies coming out on Blu-Ray

Movies that I love, I have to double dip. It's a completely new experience. Esspecially if you have a kickass sound system. The audio alone is worth it to me over the improvement in video.

I've gone one further. I sold most of my SDDVDs and don't plan on buying any more. I don't see myself rewatching them, knonwing that many will be out in HD in a few years. The only ones I kept are Disney, Ghibli and some universal stuff (eg Back to the Future).

no, not even close...just have a few dozens BD movies, 60 or so

never had any movie collection before BD (not in DVD, not in VHS, not in Laser disc), so I don't feel guilty indulging myself in HD-era

damn, lets see the collection!!

review is up, 4 stars for picture? disappointing for what everyone is calling the 'to be demo disc'

To be honest, I like this transfer, but I don't love it. 'Casino Royale' is actually the first film I've seen more than once in theater since, I believe, 'Jurassic Park' (in 1993!), and this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 presentation does a fairly good job of approximating my experiences at that theater, but it also looks a bit digital and artificial. Detail rarely reaches the heights of the best Blu-ray titles I've enjoyed and though the image does have pop, I wasn't consistently blown away.

This guy always does this with Blu-ray titles, nitpicking the littlest of things, but letting them go for HD DVD titles. He gave Blackhawk Down a 4 as well. If Casino Royale looks as good as Blackhawk Down, I'll be a happy man. You can bet Sony did their best with the transfer.

That's one of the many reviews to come. I'm particularly looking forward to the reviews from hometheaterhifi and hometheaterspot

Eh...it's a Sony transfer. In all honesty, I think Sony transfers have been a bit weak at times. I don't think their encoders are up to par with the other studios, so I wouldn't be surprised if Casino Royal was lacking.

Pirates will probably be THE demo disc since Buena Vista encoders seem excellent and that movie screams demo disc if done right.

Thanks for pointing out only half of the review.

While I may have qualms about this disc's video transfer, it is far harder to find fault with the audio. Sony serves up another uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround track, and it's a winner.

This is a James Bond film, so we expect nothing less than gangbusters sound design, and sure enough, we get it. The filmmaking team behind the franchise know that their bread and butter is the kind of action that sets trends, and there are some back-to-basics, non-CGI sequences here that are truly death-defying. The sonic highlights in 'Casino Royale' are by far the early Madagascar foot chase, the airport interception and the climactic collapse of the building in Venice. Each provides first-rate demo material. Dynamic range is wide and powerful. Deep bass rumbles (just listen to that airplane take off -- it's a stunner). And the attention to fine detail to discrete effects is flawless. Imaging between channels excels and is near-transparent, with a very effective wall of sound created during the most intense action moments. When the bullets fly, 'Casino Royale' doesn't disappoint.

I'll be enjoying my pre-ordered copy. :D

Another review perfect score 5/5 from hometheaterforum.

Here's what the reviewer says about the High def digest review:

I'd have to disagree with that (highdefdigest) review... Peter is an excellent reviewer, but he has shown that he often-times can't get past stylistic choices in how certain films are shot. What I look for in a great transfer is in how close the video presentation is to the theatrical experience. In the case of Casino Royal, it is perfect.

Youre giving them your money in advance. Thats never a good thing.

With that said, I've bought 95% of my DVDs in the past 2 years from Futureshop, and never had any issue. Brick and mortar though, not online.

Well, I haven't been billed, though haven't checked my transactions lately. I hope it gets shipped as soon as the release date hits.

Unrelated: I ordered Prestige on Futureshop. I didn't get a confirmation email, which annoys me cause they said it was in stock.
