The title made me chuckle "Merkel could very well remain Chancellor".
There is absolutely zero doubt at all that she will remain chancellor.
Schulz has almost become a non-entity in the media, because he has no current relevance besides being the candidate.
I still believe Gabriel let Schulz run a losing race while he secured himself a great office he can keep after the elections.

Even if we wanted to pretend that anything Canada did mattered to the world at large, Trudeau is absolutely not "doing okay". He's a terrible leader who got elected (and continues to be well liked to people who don't know what they're talking about) purely on his family name and good looks. He's a meme leader. He has done a few good things but largely his actual policies stink. Obviously there needed to be a change from Harper but Canada can do -a lot- better than Trudeau.

16 years of Merkel isn't necessarily "good" because it again demonstrates the shit situation of German politics.
A lot of the parties that are members of Party of European Socialists is utter shit right now with their platform and to win votes, with the exception of Sweden's SAP and Portugal's Socialist Party - although not perfect or a good left platform, at least is better than our SPD and France's PS for example...

I prefer Schulz, but she has recognized the need for change. She just recently changed her opinion on a european financial budget.

The problem, at least in my opinion is, that her whole strategy most of the time is "Wait and see", even when you need a quick decision.
Though I would be okay with it if she is chancellor again.

Never voted for her and I doubt I will for the rest of my life, but tbh we could have it worse. Fucking austerity is a dead end street, but apart from that she is bearable in comparison to so many other politicians in the present and the past. (Fuck you Helmut Kohl, you corrupt cunt.)

Sure, he's disgusting. But there was a point in time he was likely to become chancellor so we really dodged a bullet there. So that is why I think Merkel is a lesser evil compared to so many other crooks. (Seehofer, anyone? ;-))
Yep, this feels mostly true. The "there is no way Merkel will ever win again as everyone hates her" t-online news comment section crowd tries their hardest to push this narration. It just doesn't happen to reflect reality.

What exactly needs to change? Do the Germans have a high unemployment rate after 16 years Merkelanism? Or do they rely on nuclear energy? And what about their debts, do they still make billions of them every year?
Seriously, I continue hearing "it's time for a change!", but most time - not every time - those comments come from Alt-right supporters who hate Merkel for letting in all those immigrants in 2015.
The thing is, the SPD on the other side of this spectrum has Schulz, who simply failed to deliver any examples of what exactly HE wants to change should he become chancellor. Instead he spreads the same kind of populist messages already used by the opposition.
I like Schulz for being fresh, for telling things like they are, like when he speaks about Erdowahn. But so far he hasn't given us any reason to make me believe he actually has a better plan for Germany than Merkel.

The traditional social democratic parties seem to be shrinking, if not outright imploding, all over Europe.

More like SPD needs Merkel gone. They won't win a federal elections against Merkel since she also appeals to some of the more conservative SPD voters.
Merkel is pretty much center on most policies (except LGBT for example) and when she leaves CDU will move to the right and SPD will gain 10-15% of their former voters back.
Some idiot like de Maiziere or Glöckner won't win a election.

Same could be said about SPD. Who's supposed to replace Schulz should he fail? Nahles, Lauterbach or Müller?
And don't underestimate de Maziere. He would wipe the floor with every single SPD politician out there.

Since my state doesn't allow me to vote the CDU / Merkel, I'll probably give the SPD a shot. Even if Martin goes down in flames, the SPD remains a good choice at the federal level.
