It's weird hearing Johnson talk about how he had loads of creative control on 8, and then seeing all these directors shown the door from Star Wars projects because of 'creative differences'.
Has Johnson just had much more agreeable ideas?
In the case of Han Solo, it seems the issue was that Lord & Miller's approach to the script clashed with Kasdan's vision (which was the vision LFL/Kathy believed in to begin with) more than anything else. Normally it wouldn't really matter how the scriptwriter feels, but it's Lawrence Kasdan writing a Star Wars film that was entirely his baby from inception, that's existence he mandated as a condition for agreeing to co-write TFA, so yeah. It was kind of a really weird situation to begin with, and this was like, the exact case in which the writer would have that level of sway. It's weird hearing Johnson talk about how he had loads of creative control on 8, and then seeing all these directors shown the door from Star Wars projects because of 'creative differences'.

Dear God no. I don't even particularly like the first Matrix (he says with a Matrix avatar and a username frequently confused for a Matrix reference) and it's all downhill from there.Get the Wachowski Sisters on this!
So long as someone else provides the script.
Plus you'd have your first female Star Wars directors...

Though again, admittedly still an improvement over Trevorrow.
He's got Top Gun 2 scheduled for the same year though.I'd like to see Joseph Kosinski tackle it.
He'd be cheap, he's worked with Disney and I think Tron Legacy shows he could probably tackle a big sci-fi franchise.

(also, TIL he did those famous Halo 3 and Gears 1 ads)

For the love of God pls noOr the Russo bros. They are Disney boys, but I don't know when they'll be liberated from Avengers...
Has a director ever juggled?
Honest question
Spielberg has done multiple sets of overlapping productions over the years (E.T. + Poltergeist, Jurassic Park + Schindler's List, The Post + Ready Player One, etc.).Has a director ever juggled?

Empire said:Also in the issue, Johnson describes the complete freedom he had to take The Last Jedi in whatever direction he chose, without having to follow a roadmap laid out by either J.J. Abrams or Lucasfilm.

I was terrified coming into this that I was gonna be like Barton Fink and have a script that was due six months ago and I'm still on page three writing about fishmongers. But its the most fun Ive ever had writing something. The whole experience was incredible: just tapping into my ten-year-old self. Even though its Star Wars, the whole thing has felt bizarrely similar to my experience making Looper or Brick or The Brothers Bloom.
Kosinski would be bomb because dude is on point visually and Disney owes him for stabbing Tron 3 in the back
Tomorrowland is also hot garbage and put Bird in anime jail, so he's not allowed out
Kosinski hasn't ever made a movie that would make me think he'd be a good fit for any story that has a soul. Let him direct commercials or music videos or some shit where he can freely wank over *aesthetic* and not have to worry about pesky things like characters. He's like an even less interesting Ridley Scott.
Denis villeneuve
no but seriously,
Go ahead and grab Matthew Vaughn as they wanted him to do a star wars film originally.
or Ryan Coogler. that would be interesting.
This thread is just a continuous circle of hot takes being posted, instantly refuted, then reposted a couple pages later.
Spielberg vetted him, who is pretty close with KK.I still don't know why they picked this dude in the first place.

Empire released an article today which includes Rian Johnson talking about directing TLJ.

Sounds like the dude had the time of his life.
That's just mean to Ridley Scott. He's a less interesting Snyder. Maybe even worse than blomkamp too.

Zack Snyder please.
Can someone explain to me from where all the Rian Johnson GAF-love is coming from?
I have seen Looper and thats the only Johnson film i saw, which in my opinion was a good film but not amazing.
I like Looper a lot but I think his Breaking Bad episodes are what earned him the most cred among tv/film geeks. Obviously his other stuff like Brick has been well-received, too.Can someone explain to me from where all the Rian Johnson GAF-love is coming from?

His earlier, smaller films Brick and The Brothers Bloom are cult classics that a lot of people love, and he also directed several of Breaking Bad's best episodes.
Uwe Boll to direct. Then all the Trevorrow haters will weep into oblivion.
Give me.... David Fincher

That would be amazing but he doesn't mesh well with corporate machines.
