What are the legitimate expectations for Texas next year? 7-5? 8-4? 9-3 with losses to OU, OSU, and A&M?

I mean, I can't imagine that they'll suddenly jump up and contend for the Big 12 crown after last year and all these coaching losses.

At this point? Two major recruiting violations and the death penalty.

So is Texas' recruiting in serious jeopardy because of this season and the staff changes?

As a non-Texan, I'm curious about how much clout Texas has with high school football players. Will they go to Texas simply because it's Texas, or would they just as easily pick A&M or Tech if they think they'll be stronger?

We can recruit a top 25 class because we're Texas. We can't recruit a top 5 class without merit though.

Apparently some of the players have opened their recruiting back up, and there's a chance some guys could follow Muschamp to Florida (this stud LB Steve Edmond among them).

While there's definitely a huge following for UT and many Texas kids grew up idolizing Ricky Williams, VY, and Colt, there are probably just as many kids who committed at least partly because of a particular coach. There's a stud DB recruit from OKC that said "he's solid" as long as Mack and the secondary coach are there.

This is a big development for the rest of the Big 12, but especially for OU (who UT largely competes with for the big Texas recruits).

IMO they'll keep most everybody. Some guys will leave but too many kids grow up in love with UT, particularly after the decade long tear they've been on, to hurt them too bad. Better not have a repeat of this season next year, though.

Texas needs to be careful though. This season plus the coaching changes could really fuck up their momentum if they don't recover quickly.

They won't be able to sleepwalk to a 10-win season anymore in the new Big 12, especially not next season.

Not worried about the Miami hire, but Muschamp is a good hire for UF. At least Texas fans don't have to worry about being without a DC for their bowl game.

Times like these make me appreciate the stability of Jim Tressel.

That's what FSU alums used to say too. :(

Fulmer did the same thing. Ran the program into the ground.

Bowden tried his best to do the same.

Tress is already approaching 60, so there's no reason to think that he'll be a Bowden or a Paterno. I'll be surprised if he's still our head coach a decade from now.

It's been strongly suggested that he's already grooming a successor (likely Luke Fickell).

It will be interesting to see how they change the Big Ten logo. Maybe they can hide a 12 in there somewhere :lol
Allegedly there were additional logos designed with 12, 13, etc. when the Hidden 11 logo was first released, just in case the conference ever expanded beyond Penn State.

It will be interesting to see if they go with that or if they go in a new direction.

7-5 with losses to BYU, OU, OSU, Baylor and A&M

I'm calling my shot.

If Gus to Vandy comes true, we should all write a thank you note, to the guy who acts like an AD for that AD-less school. Get's Gus out of a school that does us damage, and moves him to a school locked into snobby academic standards, promising he'll never really get the cream of the crop football players!
Let's just hope it doesn't come true (even though it seems inevitable it will be announced today). I stood by my evaluation of Tubs being nothing without a good OC, and I see nothing in Chizik to make me think otherwise with him. Next year Auburn sans Newton but holding on to Malzahn, would have lead to a decent season resulting in a respectable bowl game. Sans both Malzahn and Newton... welcome to Tony Franklin/Tubs-ville.

BYU's first half of the season is really tough. I'd love to see them get by Texas with a win. Heaps is going to see much better competition is sophomore season than his freshman year. Here's hoping he's ready.

This isn't really it is it? It's like the pre-real thing-make-you-more-opened-minded-when the-real-thing-is-revealed-to-be-only-marginally-better version right? :lol

It's gonna be like that Gap logo thing. Totally.

In other news (read: wild rumor).
We hear Michigan is waiting until after the Orange Bowl to hire Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. Lane Kiffin will celebrate Jan. 4.

But an excellent point is made on Twitter:
According to Scott Wolf, Michigan will hire Jim Harbaugh after the Jan. 3 Orange Bowl. Then again, according to Scott Wolf.
:lol

New division names are:

Legends and Leaders.

Eh, theyre ok.
That is stupid.

Using anything other than a cardinal direction/geographic landmark as division divider makes it hard as hell for anyone outside the B1G to remember who's in which division.

P.S. I propose that the Big Ten shall be known as the B1G from now on on GAF.

These kids grow up dreaming of being a Longhorn. I can't stress it enough -- it is absolute religion here and I am saying that not as a recent Austinite but as someone who has followed recruiting quite a bit the last 5 years or so. This will have 0 longterm affect and may cause them to lose 2-3 kids at most this year but they'll replace them immediately with some other 4 star from Texas. What it may do in the short term is make it harder to get the occasional 5* they pull from OOS.

Honestly though, if they replace Muschamp with Shannon as expected, there won't be much drop off as he is just as decorated, young and also runs a 4-3. Also, I'd rather have the OC from Boise than Major Applewhite any day of the week. They'll be 9-4 next year IMO. Lose a few due to giving up some extra points and win a few due to a competent offense.

I fully plan on calling them the Ohio State Division and the Michigan Division.

I still think they should have gone with the Yin and Yang divisions.

WTF theres 18 new trophies in the big 10 now too. Stagg-Paterno is the championship trophy name, and Grange-Griffin is the MVP of champ game trophy.

Should have just went with Bo/Woody division names.

Why the fuck did they include Paterno?

Call it the Hayes-Schembechler Trophy, for fuck's sake.

Oh, no, that would actually respect the history and tradition of the Big 10. I am calling it the Ohio State and Michigan Divisions purely out of cynicism and my suspicion that those were the spec names.

Better then the Rotel and Barbasol Divisions I suppose.

They are far from okay. I can't even wrap my head around who decided those should be the new names. Good lord!

Oh man, I leave to go get some coffee, and Leaders and Legends. My Fucking God....

What's next, The Turtles and The Rascals Divisions?

The "B1G" secondary logo is fine, really.

The "B1G TEN" with the block around the TEN looks dumb, though.
And we're already seeing B1G Stockholm Syndrome. I'm so sorry, BC. :(

A good point on the trophy name:
Stagg - Paterno - One school that's not in the B1G anymore, and one that's been in it for 17 years...

It's comical for them to talk about the history and tradition of the conference and then stick Joe Paterno's name on the championship trophy.

That's just ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure you can thank a committee for the latter.
