Controllers |OT| It's the Hall-Effect Life!

Kinda surprised that Linux has a more usefull "baseline support" - whatever that means- without Steam running.
Not really, Xpad driver on Linux picks up a bunch of controllers as Generic Xbox Pads, so it will probably run out of the box with at least base support.

What sucks about this is that my current obsession (Final Fantasy XI) doesn't work with the Steam overlay, because Steam launches the launcher then the launcher launches the game (at which point it falls out of Steam's control). Big ol bummer.

Did you try to add secondary exe to steam and see what that does?

Check Durin's post in post 746, one of those might work for you

I did, it won't launch because the launcher actually does the external account validation and passes a token to the client EXE itself.

To this point it bugs me more than it should, since Steam won't track my playtime lol

If does work, I think I'm gonna put it under notable posts.

jshackles jshackles do let us now.
Will do. I'm 100% getting the Steam Controller (even took off work Monday so I can properly F5 that bastard) and will definitely be trying what I can to make it work with Final Fantasy XI.

So I'm having issues with my xbox controller, drift and some buttons not pressing right sometimes.
I'm not sure I want to buy a xbox controller again, because I had several ones and there's always something :messenger_pensive: I have one that lasted quite a while, but 2 others had drift issues in just a few months.

I'm really not sure what else to get though.
All third party controllers have some gimmicks I don't care about and I'm afraid would get in the way.

They seem to ALL have back buttons / paddles, and I wouldn't have any usage for these at all, I'm afraid they would make the hold feel uncomfortable. Same for the additional bumper / trigger that many controllers have, I don't think I would ever need them and they would probably just get in the way.

I also don't like when controllers have a bright led on them, I find it distracting. With the Xbox Series controller I thankfully found a trick online to disable them on windows.

I'd just like some kind of improved xbox controller with hall effect / tmr sticks, and better buttons, but that doesn't exist :messenger_loudly_crying:

I also looked at the 8bitdo and I'm afraid the shape wouldn't feel ergonomic, it's too square-ish. The upcoming Ultimate 3e seems to slightly improve this, and also lets you pick between silicone or micro-switch button, and tmr stick... That one seems nice, even if I'm still worried about the back buttons and the R4 / L4 shoulder buttons :messenger_grinning_sweat: And the power light that probably can't be turned off.

Yes, I know I'm annoying and picky, sorry :messenger_pensive: Don't know what I'll decide to get...

Gamesir Nova Lite, maybe?

No frills, no LED lighting, no back or extra buttons. Essentially just a standard Xbox-style wireless controller with Hall effect sticks and better buttons.

Never used it myself so not sure how it holds, maybe others can chime in. Here's a comparison shot with it (upper right), the Logitech F310 (upper left), and the 8bitdo Ultimate (bottom):

I was gonna suggest gamesir's and 8bitdo's cheaper stuff but he doesn't even say if he wants it wired or wireless and he specifically says TMR and those have the more common hall effect stuff and Idk if their buttons are membrane or switches sooooo, he has to look that up himself I guess.

Hmmm maybe, I'll look more into it. The plastic gives me a bit cheaper impression on picture, but you can't have everything :messenger_grinning_sweat: Thank you for the suggestion.

I'm used to wired so it can be wired, I don't mind it.

I mentioned TMR because apparently it's better than Hall Effect, but I never tried either so I don't know how each feel.
Switches is not mandatory, just seems like it's the optimal thing? But for example Dualsense is membrane, but I find the buttons MUCH better than on the Xbox Series controller. You really know on a dualsense if the button is pressed or not, it's really a on / off thing. On Xbox, you can press the button without it actually registering, if you for example only press it lightly, or a bit to the side.

Avoiding stick drift is my main concern, more than the buttons, but if the buttons can be better than on Xbox, that's a plus too.

I'm not particularly looking for the cheapest models, I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra if it's a controller that I really liked, but it seems like the more expensive it is, the more things I don't like it will have 😅

Well, like said gamesir and 8bitdo have several cheaper models that are super standard/plain/have no fluff like back buttons and leds but at least the basic upgrade of hall effect sticks and/or triggers. Go to an eshop, sort by price ascending and check out the cheaper stuff that don't add such fluff.

Edit: lol even the cheapest gamesir has back buttons, dang they're VFM. Editedit: 8bitdo extra shoulder buttons (?!) too (2C). Just don't use them, lol. The controller market seems to be living its best life right now, like geometrically opposite to every other gaming hardware thing being a ripoff :P

T3_Lite_1.png

And they still have better hw features than standard first party stuff which used to be the only real option for decent build quality, but no more.

Yeah, unfortunately everything I'm aware of on the market that's more expensive with a higher build quality also has back buttons and LEDs everywhere.

I will say that with the 8Bitdo 3e (if it's like the original and 2) then the LEDs around the thumbsticks can be turned off in the software, and the light around the Xbox / main button can also be disabled. But it's gonna have those extra buttons - and you could remap them in the software to literally do nothing at all, but if they bug you while holding it then yeah that'll still be an issue.

and the light around the Xbox / main button can also be disabled
Oh wait really??? I knew the sticks could be disabled, but I didn't think you could turn off the led light around the Xbox button! That's a great thing for me if we actually can.
So the extra buttons would be the only possible annoyance on the Ultimate 3e. I don't know how I would react to the extra shoulder button, the back buttons are the ones that worry me the most, don't you always press them when just holding the controller?
Outside of the extra buttons, the Ultimate 3e does look pretty promising, and I like that you can even pick the type of buttons you want.

Again not totally sure on that. It looks like they took away the ability to do that with the 2C (for some dumb reason) but my Ultimate 2 I can toggle that light by pressing the "Star" button then up/down on the d-pad to change the brightness (down to nothing). So - maybe.

I kinda had the same thought as you, until I used the Ultimate 2. Out of the box the back buttons literally do nothing when clicked in - you have to go into the software and tell it "I want this left back button to be the same as pressing A". If you don't do that, it's literally just an extra little thing you can pop all the time without consequence.

My problem with having it set up that way was I started just clicking it randomly while reading text in JRPGs like it was some kind of fidget toy.

You might also check out the upcoming CRKD Ult Pro

The only light is a charging indicator in the middle of the controller. It's got a bunch of remappable buttons too though, but again these can be remapped to literally do nothing when pressed.

Never heard about this brand before, there is really a lot of options :messenger_grinning_sweat:
I hope the ultimate 3e will have the same light options as the ultimate 2, would be nice.
How do you feel about the shape of the ultimate 2, compared to xbox?

That's a very old school looking one right there :messenger_tongue: Looks like a mix between older dualshock and snes.
I also prefer asymmetric sticks, should have mentioned that

I have a CRKD Nitro Deck for the Switch (1) and their Gibson guitar controller, and I've been incredibly happy with both. Great build quality. In fact, the company was started by ex-Activision guys who worked there during the Guitar Hero era designing custom controllers. Was personally planning on picking up the Ult Pro, but Valve kinda showed up out of nowhere to take away my "new controller budget" money.

The 8bitdo ultimate 2 I enjoy, but I'm with you - I have big hands and I find the curvature of the controller itself to be wrong and too cramped and a bit unnatural. The 3e looks to improve that design, but I am curious if it'll be enough.

but I am curious if it'll be enough.
It does seem to be a little too subtle yeah... Wish they increased the curvature even more to be more in line with the Xbox controller (or even the Dualsense which is also more curved than that).

Well, I'll look around and keep thinking about it... I'm terrible when it comes to changing something :messenger_confounded: :messenger_crying:
There's still no date for the Ultimate 3e right? Also I can't find any prices, but I read that it will be quite expensive, I saw some people mentioning 150$, which starts to sting.

Yes Engadget confirmed the $150 price tag on the 3E which definitely stings

Only thing they mentioned at CES is "Q2 2026"

pretty expensive for an 8bitdo, but still highly competitive pricing overall compared to similar controllers.

it includes 2 ABXY button modules with different feel to them (rubber membranes and micro switches), a wireless charging dock, a wifi dongle, 4 additional replacement sticks, and 2 pad types.

Try GuliKit ES Pro + Gulikit Hyperlink 2 Adapter.

No back paddles buttons, no additional bumper buttons.

TMRs. 1000Hz wired, 750Hz over BT via Hyperlink 2 adapter plus you can use it for other first party BT controllers.

You can try it without adapter too first.

It will probably work without their BT adapter but I had to just buy one, lmao. If it won't work just go wired and see if you like it at first.

It's a bit budget model, so it's extra cheap.

But don't expect some crazy ass quality, like officially licenced third party controllers.

But I bought one at release date and gave one to my friend when his Xbox controller broke so we could play No Rest for The Wicked again and it is still going strong and it didn't break, lmao.

I think I grabbed it more than my G7 Pro because of better stick linearity in the past. So its pretty good budget model.

That seems like a decent option too, are gulikit controllers good in general? It does look really cheap, build / plastic wise, on the picture at least, but it's on the cheap price range too.
Another one added to the list of controllers to think about, thanks :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I also have TT Max and mine is fine, so was my ES Pro which is still going strong at my friends.

yet_another_alt yet_another_alt had issues with back paddles though on TT Max.

So it's tough to say.

I also had KK3 Pro I think and I've busted that one but it was on me, lmao. I wanted to remove additional springs in bumpers so the switch would only bounce back and not switch plus spring and it didn't like live through it. I tried to like put it back together but Hall effect triggers didn't work well after that. Like sensor broke or smth.

Edit: I may still have KK3 Pro DualSense Edge style back buttons, I think I'm gonna try those on TT Max, I like those more than back paddles anyways.

Someone managed to open-source a dualsense PC dongle that can retain most of the features wirelessly! Might try to get my hands on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2W and print a case for it.

My TT Max is great. It does come with back paddles as an option, so no need to worry about those if you don't want to use them.
