I find it the opposite, it's so easy to criticise DBZ in a self-contained environment. I can only find appreciation for it in the context of when it was released and the cultural climate of America (or the West) and Japan during that era, at which point it becomes fascinating.

I like the moments when you realize what American movies were being released at the time Toriyama was writing which chapter.

It's funny to see how Terminator 1 AND Terminator 2 both had their own minor influences on the series over its decade long run.
