Cross-Platform Smash Bros. coming to 3DS/WiiU, [Has Not Started Development]

Link is third party confirmed.

Most likely meant Snake, not Link
Not sure, Link was clearly the TP design, maybe he was talking about the designs, since he changes Mario and the likes.

I'm on vacation in Miami right now, but just a quick clarification about the whole 50 character, etc. thing:

"At the very least, it's not right to envision the new game as an extension of Melee or Brawl. Would I be satisfied by adding 50 characters, or doubling the number of stages? I don't think that simply increasing the amount of content would be enough. I can't simply improve the graphical quality, either."

In other words, it sounds like Sakurai is planning more of an overhaul than simply spreading the gameplay across two systems. I haven't read through the entire thing yet, but this was the first bolded section that stood out to me. Dunno if I'll have time to do a full translation that satisfies me in terms of phrasing and such, but I'll try to share anything else that catches my eye.

Other than that, OMG SO EXCITE

Overhaul.... Hmmm.. That meant we might get 25-35 characters as well. Just to be safe.

Looks like this will be a while away then. Probably won't even make launch. Still, always exciting to hear any news about Smash.

With the Wii U controller's touchpad being shown as an item HUD in Zelda I really wanna see the ability to store items and use them later on in Smash Bros Wii U.

Emergency bumper throw go!

Who care about items?
I'm serious, I really hope Sakurai doesn't make the competitive multiplayer worse than Brawl :(.

Some items I'm cool with, but others do suck. Smash Balls especially. It turns the game into hunting for smash attacks more than hunting for a way to zone someone towards the edge.

I'm cool with most items that act as barriers and walls like springboards and bumpers. The bomb I hate along with poison mushroom, sticky bombs and lightning bolt. The rest I think are livable though there are so many now that I likely missed a few.

Re: the interaction between systems --

It sounds more like Sakurai is envisioning a Pokémon Stadium-style setup. Players would build up characters through "individual" play on the 3DS, gaining experience and whatnot via battle results; the WiiU would thus function as a "public" space in which players could display their characters and pit them against other gamers.

Also, Sakurai later mentions that, although he was the one in charge of balancing characters in previous installments, he plans on entrusting that task to the game planners this time.

More translations as I see fit/as my iPhone will allow/as I can pull myself away from the beach.

Another translation: http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/09/iwata_asks_smash_bros/

It seems they only did Kid Icarus because Iwata figured Sakurai wouldn't want to jump into another Smash game after Brawl. A Smash game would be Project Sora's second title. KI:U was for getting the grips on 3DS development.

Iwata was originally going to ask Smash for 3DS or Wii U. It was Sakurai who figured that Smash had to be on both platforms.

They will retain much of the KI:U staff for the new Smash games, but will be hiring more staff considering the size of the project.

Sakurai will delgate game balance and character strength to the staff this time around.

The project will begin with porting over Brawl's gameplay, and then figure it out from there.

THANK YOU.
I wouldn't get too excited :P. Remember they did the same with Brawl, starting with Melee and changing it. There's no telling where this will end up, but that's one fun thing about the series; every game is drastically different.

These are my favorites. Because you actually have to strategize with them and use them to help you zone the level.

If only 1 pad can be used per console and there are no Gamecube controller ports, what does this mean for local multi?
Nothing, really... Just like Nintendo emphasized classic controls for Brawl, they will emphasize classic controller pro with this game, maybe even bundle it with it.

So we won't have fuck-you-tier Metaknight and bullshit chain grabbin' Dedede this time. That's nice to know.

With two games planned for development, fans will really be able to go wild with speculation about the newcomers, as there will surely be a robust roster. May I nominate two characters from upcoming games:

KidIcarusUprising-Art08Magnus.png

Magnus, from Sakura's own Kid Icarus Uprising. Meant to be Pit's foil -- a fallen angel, perhaps -- Magnus could be a heavy-hitting sword user.

LoZSkywardSword-Art02DemonLordGhirahim.png

Demon Lord Ghirahim, from Skyward Sword. Someone here put it best when they said he's a "latter-day Kefka." Blocking swords with his fingers, warping around in a flurry of diamond-shaped sparkles, taunting men as soft while licking his lips with a Gene Simmons-esque tongue -- he's a character alright!

Actually I was thinking about Magnus yesterday, but I never thought about Ghirahim. It would be interesting to see how they make it happens.

I was thinking that we might have good chance to see few series that haven't touch ssb as playable characters;

Animal Crossing: Tom Nook
Punch Out: Little Mac
Golden Sun: Issac/Matthew
Paper Mario: Mario
Takamaru

I don't mind to see new revamped Luigi and to witness him to represent luigi mansion series now. If not then I hope to see Gadd.

Don't worry, we'll get Bowser Jr., Toon Zelda, and a fourth Star Fox character with the same move set as the other three before we get anyone actually interesting.

Sounds like Smash 3DS might have a single player experience (personal) while Wii U will focus have a multiplayer experience (Public) & 60FPS
- talk of creating another Smash Bros. began internally soon after the launch of Brawl
- Iwata thought that it might not be fair to ask Sakurai to create a Smash Bros. game for 3DS after just wrapping Brawl
- Kid Icarus: Uprising was decided as Project Sora's first game, as a way to build up knowledge of the platform
- newly hired staff at Project Sora had no idea that they were coming on-board to work on a Smash Bros. game after Kid Icarus
- Sakurai new automatically that a new Smash would be requested for both 3DS and Wii U
- Sakurai feels that just adding in new characters, better graphics and more stages wouldn't be the right path for this new Smash Bros.
- Sakurai believes a portable Smash experience allows for new ideas, but it also becomes more personal than the console experience
- both Iwata and Sakurai said that adding an element of growing your character through in-game experience would ruin the game
- Sakurai would like to see players build up their character on 3DS and then take them over to Wii U to show off
- this would make the "personal" portable space and the stadium-like "public" console space mesh together
- Wii U's power could lead to 60 frames per second visuals, high quality graphics, dynamic effects, and smooth character movements
- Sakurai feels the connectivity between both games is very important
- Sakurai wants the 3DS version to be a slightly different experience than what we're used to
- he'd like to have players helping one-another
- while Sakurai has headed up areas of Smash Bros. games like game balance and character strength settings, he's hoping to have the staff take that on for these titles
- first plans for the game's development is basic gameplay systems of Smash Bros. X to 3DS and Wii U
- Sakurai warns that if he can't find the right staffers to work with, he'll either take 5 years to make the game with a small team, or end up making just one version of the game

These seem like conflicting statements...

I hope that someone makes a surprise arrival to Project Sora to grovel and beg for a collaboration...

...and that person is Yoshinori Ono, for a Capcom vs Smash Bros. (Except Nintendo will think of the name.)

I REALLY doubt Nintendo will have problems finding people to work on this game.
Even if it's just HAL and GameArts again.

It is all about timing. GameArts was available at the time to dedicate themselves to start the project while more staff was added. Several of the staff were only contracted. Monolith Soft and Nintendo themselves are the second largest entity after Game Arts on Smash Brawl. But then you also have some contracted staff from Epoch, AQ Interactive, HAL Laboratory, and even a planner from Square-Enix.

But an HD Smash Bros and 3DS Smash Bros is going to require an even bigger staff. Much bigger. Sakurai is going to be exhausted after this one.

Classic Controller Pro.
There's going to be an incredible demand for the GC controller though. I can definitely see something like this coming;

I'd even bet that's part of the reason they didn't prepare Smash Bros. for launch.

Yeah, even though he wanted to make Smash Bros., I kinda feel for Sakurai. Only making Smash Bros. I'm pretty sure he left Nintendo because he was making the same thing over and over.

I also don't feel like they'll have any trouble gathering developers. Miyamoto's got a lot of connections (like how he introduced Sakurai to Game Arts) and I'm sure Iwata has other connections.

i hope the game has tons of third party characters so we get a lot more people complaining about how the purity of Smash Bros. is being ruined

Actually, I was curious about this -- I've been assuming the WiiU had no GameCube ports, as they were never mention, but they made a big deal about being backwards compatible with "all Wii accessories."

This is curious given the nature of the DDR dance pads, which plug into the GC ports.

I won't give a shit until they add characters that have no proper relationship with Nintendo. Mega Man has more importance to the Nintendo lineage than, say, Marth, in my eyes, so he's a must. Someone like, say, Altair or whatever can fuck off though.

Snap, I hadn't thought of that. The reasons to keep my Wii keep piling up.

Assuming the Wii U won't drastically change from the current model, then there are no GameCube ports as there were on the original Wii. Perhaps they'll release an external accessory to fix this.

I'm really curious how they'll pull off the local multiplayer. The current set up (4 Wii Remotes and 1 Wii U controller) wouldn't work, at least for the majority of us who can't stand Smash with Wiimotes. The only other possibilities are classic controllers and 3DS. Classic controller is a notch better than Wiimotes, but hardly ideal, and 3DS as a controller is no better.

Well, when they make a big deal of specifying it's compatible with "all Wii accessories" but make NO reference to the GameCube, the logical assumption is that GameCube compatibility is gone -- or, at least, the GC controller ports are.

This is reminding me that I need to get my hands on two things:

1) A GC to Wii Extension Port adaptor (these exist)
2) a Classic Controller to GC port adaptor (these exist too)

With both of these I'd be able to use all sorts of accessories for GameCube, Wii, and WiiU games... like the TvC fight stick.

First Sakurai is making it again and then they announce this shit? Fuck, I'm already raging and the game hasn't even begun being made yet.

Getting body ready for more bad rosters, bad mechanics, pointless modes, and etc.

Wait did somebody just say Megaman is more important to Nintendo than Marth?

Good. Fucking. Lord. I can't be in this thread, my rage will spill the blood of millions.

So many NES kids grew up playing Mega Man in both the West and Japan, and would have continued on to the X series and so forth. How many of those do you think played Fire Emblem? Just think about it. Mega Man is a big part of Nintendo history, and a bigger part than Fire Emblem. He's more deserving of a place in a celebration of Nintendo's past and present than a good amount of the Brawl roster.

Mega Man, Simon Belmont, and Ryu Hayabusa are more integral to Nintendo nostalgia than Marth, Lucario, and Meta Knight.
Lucario will be out by defalt he will be replaced by a gen 5 or 6 pokemon.
