Crossbuy Support coming to Windows 10 and Xbox

I said it in another topic and I'll say it here:

If I can play with my Xbox Live friends on PC I would pay more than a game on Steam any day. I know this isn't the case with everyone, but I imagine a lot of people might have the same mindset.

Fantastic news, wanted this for a while longer now. Play on my PC for maximum graphics and play on the Xbox when I'm playing with friends. The only thing that's better would be cross-play :D

Hope that this catches on and third-party devs are going to use it.

Not sure how anyone can be negative about this news other than for randomly salty reasons. More storefronts = more pricing competition for games. This is great news. And if I can buy a game on Xbone and get the PC version to play with my pc buddies and visa versa that's awesome.

I completely agree with you that this is good news for gamers. But the full context of what this means is missing - this isn't just about storefronts. Its about DRM.

Take Call of Duty, for example. The PC release relies on Steam DRM. That means Valve gets their cut. Expecting to pay $60 to get the Steam PC game and Xbox digital game is not realistic, in my opinion.

So we're either getting GFWL v2.0, or a higher price point ($70 maybe), or....this will only be of use for smaller indie games. ....Again, I'm not saying this news is in any way bad - just perhaps not a megaton moment.

This is really awesome news
Huge for the Xbox ecosystem

I wonder if there are any hurdles to getting your universal app available on console

Okay, how does this work? Does this mean I can buy Xbone titles without owning one, and play it on my PC, or do I still need a console?

I haven't really been keeping up with this.

I don't understand it either, but it's not what you suggested at all. You still need an Xbone to play those games.

It's exactly as he suggested.

If a game is developed as a universal Windows 10 game, you'll be able to purchase it once and own it on your Windows 10 PC and/or Xbox.

You can also stream your Xbone games to Windows 10 devices, that is different. You don't need an Xbone for the cross buy.

If you buy Call of Duty on Steam, Valve gets their cut

If you buy it on disc and redeem it on Steam, Valve does not get a cut

Oh yeah I get that, I was referring to games that are XB1 exclusive. You can't stream those to PC without owning an XB1.

I'm not really sure this is something I would really benefit from. If a game is available on both PC and Xbox One, I'll choose to play on PC pretty much every time even if I own both versions, and if I'm going to play on PC, I'd rather get it from Steam than the Windows 10 Store.

I'm all for more content on PC, but getting an extra copy that I won't play isn't really an incentive to buy the game, and it certainly won't make me more inclined to purchase an Xbox One.

Not what if there are a few true exclusives on Xbox that interest you? Would that sweeten the pot a bit?

You can buy an Xbox and play those games and at the same time have access to some of your PC catalogue to play on that Xbox too (like say you want to play Ori but it's more convenient on the xbox). On the flip side maybe your an Xbox only gamer... PC gaming will look that much more appealing if you can stream you Xbox games there and already have a catalogue on Xbox.

I think that's what they are going for anyways (regardless of how you feel about exclusives).

It's not going to benefit everyone, specifically those people that already have there PC plugged into there TV bit it will benefit a lot of people I think.

Yeah same here, unless it's really poorly optimized for PC and ends up running better on my XB1, I'm almost always going to play the PC version.

The appeal of cross-buy for my PS4/Vita and WiiU/3DS is that one version is for playing on my TV and one is for portable/bed use.

My PC and XB1 are both hooked to the same TV and sound system so having two versions is kind of redundant, but I suppose there's people that will benefit from this. Seamless cross-save/cloud saving synchronization is going to be crucial though if people are jumping back and forth between platforms.

Nice of MS to render the Xbox One largely obsolete. I'm sure the Windows 10 Store will work great alongside Origin and Uplay as the clients you only use for exclusives that don't come to Steam.

This might not be the best news, if I'm being cynical.

Games like Tomb Raider, Ori and the Blind Forest, or any other game with some kind of deal with Microsoft could never be come to Steam. This cross-buy feature will essentially cement that. SteamOS is essentially shoving Microsoft out of the picture, and Microsoft wants to shove Steam off of the PC. Microsoft will tell companies "Come to Xbox and the W10 Marketplace or Steam. Choose." Not sure how many companies will want to forgo the entire Xbox ecosystem.

Of course, this likely only applies to companies with marketing deals or exclusivity contracts...but it could expand.

I would happily stop buying games on Steam if I could get the Xbox and pc versions of new releases. Steam is great and all but man, cross buy pc and console games is the Dream

Have they really confirmed whether big name games will be cross buy? I can see smaller games like indies and stuff doing this easily, but something tells me cross buy Halo 5 isn't a sure bet.

Only Indies so far

But they didn't talk alot about their own games, since it was a presentation to motivate people to use the new Windows Store. I think E3 is the conference to talk about big titles to catch consumers, maybe a suprise at /build, but I think this is unlikely since it's also a dev conference

If it's a Microsoft published game that's going to Windows 10 it'll be cross-buy I'd assume. It seem like they're serious about this Xbox as an ecosystem thing. They said most other first party games were coming so I'd assume one of them will be a big thing.

Could this mean if Halo 5 comes to PC, I just need to buy it once and play it on PC and XBox One?

pretty much. they said it would be up to developers to allow cross-play, cross-buy, rules for control methods(i.e. controller only/no KB&M)

the question now is whether they go all out on this with their first party or keep games like Halo, Forza and Gears a console only experience.

Phil talks about it here

Thanks for the link.

That's bad news for Xbox. If this actually happens why would I buy an Xbox One?

All platform holders need to/will move this way.

It's not about selling hardware but about selling the "ecosystem"

If there is a next generation of consoles this wi be considered standard.

Take notes Nintendo.

MS want's you on their storefront buying games, DLC, and renewing live subscriptions. they're making money off of consoles but not nearly as much as they're making off people spending money in their ecosystem.

I've become less obsessed with all my games being on Steam ever since other companies started doing their own thing. I'm fine with this. As long as I can play more games on PC.

Raising profits by focusing on services instead of hardware, makes sense.

Don't use Windows myself so this isn't really of any use to me but it's good to see it happening.

I don't any stats to back me up, but I'm gonna bet that X1's primary reason for purchase isn't "they didn't release X for my gaming PC".
It's a reason, and if they remove that reason why would sales increase? PC gaming isn't as daunting or costly as it used to be, and I'd bet there are plenty of people who will be fine building or buying a PC and never paying a XBL subscription again. I highly doubt cross buy will be a selling point for Xbox One, and honestly I'm struggling to see the point of it. I mean, the big reason cross buy is attractive on Playstation is that one of the platforms involved is mobile.

Well fuckin-A. Remember though this is just crossbuy "support", it's not like retroactive or for all titles from here on out. Still a great step in the right direction.

After years of this, I think Microsoft... might actually be serious about PC games now. O_O

that's why I think this is the last xbox console we'll see. but im crazy.
Hmm, I don't see it. The console itself could be an easy way to people's living room, something like Steam machines. Not everyone has a good pc, not everyone has the patience to build it nor tweak it.

People are willing to pay for convenience.

Yeah, I can see how this would be a good thing for some people, it's just not something that appeals to me personally. If I'm going to buy a console, it'll be to play exclusives. If I could play every game on my PC, I would. Consoles are things I buy to play games I can't get anywhere else, so the ability to play some of my PC games on an Xbox isn't really a selling point for me.

It doesn't really help that my computer monitor is the only true 1080 resolution screen in the building, not counting phones/tablets, so I prefer to play consoles on the same screen as my computer anyway, which, coupled with the fact that the only way to get internet access in my room is Wi-Fi, also means I don't get much out of in-home streaming.
