David Jaffe Accidentally Leaks Details About New Game

Calling All Cars is awesome, a modern classic in terms of local multiplayer. It's sad to hear Jaffe himself talk about it as if it were a flop or whatever, but on the other hand I'm glad it provided him with some valuable lessons that will make his future games that much better. I just like it a heck of a lot is all

I don't see why it can't be battling in arenas. While i'm sure an open world could work, I like the idea of it remaining in arenas with the destruction level dramatically increased.
Well, I meant in terms of depth. I don't think the standard instanced car battles will be able to hold gamers' attention for very long. Paradise is known for having tons of play modes and a huge environment packed with activities to roam around in. There are also tons of cars, upgrades, and achievements.

When I saw the description of Split/Second I thought it sounded like something that would be done better by Jaffe, since he has experience with setting up these awesome cinematic moments. He even said in an interview that TM was inspired by movie car chases, and the overarching goal was "to put the player in a Hollywood action movie."

All I know is, if there's another Twisted Metal, Kratos better be a secret character that has some awesome 'God of Warmachine' vehicle that can blow everything on the screen up with ease.

better yet, how about it sticks rigorously to its own aesthetic like TM1, TM2, and TMB each did

just make Minion unbelievably intimidating in appearance and even more powerful than in previous incarnations

Ahh TM2, one of my favorite games ever. That's still the measuring stick for the genre.
That and Interstate 76. The funny thing about I76 was that the main tagline was "Never get out of the car." So the first thing they add in I82 is the ability to get out of the car :/

* “Dragging him behind your car”
* “When he is launched out of a car”
* “Animation for the “human characters” needs improvement because “right now it’s so dry, it needs to feel like an action movie”
* “Character falls to the ground, crawls frantically, looks at approaching cars, trying to get away, slipping as he tried to get up”

Sounds like Calling All Cars 2! :lol

Ahhh I was wondering if we would eventually get some kind of details. TM is one of my favorite franchises, as well as anything Jaffe does. As mentioned before, this could all be in relation to a cut-scene or cinematic.

Would love to see a TM focused around competitive multiplayer. The genre really died off at a bad time. RPG elements, car customization, and multiple online modes never made it into the genre, and it would be a great fit. I'm also really hoping this next TM uses some kick ass physics, and bails on the old arcade driving. It was fun, but its time is over, and something new is definitely needed.

IMHO, Twisted Metal needs to be online only like MAG.

Trick it out with all kinds of leveling up (RPG) elements.

Yeah...it better not have split screen.

This. Twisted Metal with perks would be awesome. But I'd love a single player where you could work your way through the twisted metal circuit...building up your rep and unlocking new weapons and armor.

Carmageddon please. Though the bit in the image sounds like it's just some scripted sequence.

Oh Carmageddon, The memories. What a game :lol . I would totally be down for a next-gen version of that.

yeah, it just needed that extra 10% effort and it would have become classic... too bad.

No fucking way. While having a good online MP mode would be very sweet and a required feature if there is a new TM game, co-op was what made the TM games so great.

Get drunk or high, or not, load up a game with 3 other buddies (or more, just rotate losers out), and go crazy.

That made me laugh quite a bit.

Since we are in Twisted Metal dream list mode, here are some things I'd like to see

-Cockpit view.
Would really add to the immersion and gameplay. I think a lot of people would like to know what the insides of their favorite Twisted Metal cars look like.

-Extensive damage modeling / physics
In past TM games, our vehicles show visible wear and tear as they get hurt, and then they explode when "dead." I think there needs to be a much more dynamic fatalities for the cars. It's time we live up to the name "Twisted Metal" and actually twist the metal in all kinds of wicked ways. Look at some horrific car crashes and go from there. Do I want to see Sweet Tooth's truck get split in half from Mr. Grimm's special? Yes I do. Do I want to see Mr. Grimm get ejected off his bike and crash into Sweet Tooth's windshield? Absolutely. Think MotorStorm but with more death.

-Car / mounted weapon customization
Since this new twisted metal would undoubtedly focus on online play, there will be many people playing the same vehicles. Beyond letting the players alter their cars appearance a bit, various user customizations can have different bonuses and trade-offs. For instance, you could heavily fortify a vehicle with plated armor, but you'll also move slower. And plated armor may be effective at stopping missiles and gunfire, but is very vulnerable to blunt physical attacks like Ricochet's, or fire based attacks like Napalm. Of course, everything needs to be carefully balanced and counter-balanced. Still, there's nothing wrong with letting players specialize their vehicles beyond the standard stock vehicle.

-New close quarters combat gameplay
So an often effective strategy in past Twisted Metal games no matter what type of vehicle you are is to ram your opponent, hold down your machine gun fire and blast away with whatever other weaponry you have on you. I think this should obviously cause some collateral damage, firing at vehicles point-blank should hurt you almost as much as it will hurt them. So this should only present itself as a viable strategy in certain cases or for the very largest of vehicles. Of course bigger vehicles are aggressors and are meant to be up close and personal, but they should have the tools to do so in their own way (latch on with chains or hooks, tractor beams, magnets, lock your prey's tires, etc.) Look at Dead Rising and how they're utilizing various weaponry (dual-chainsaw motorbike) there's no reason this kind of stuff can't be incorporated into Twisted Metal to give the close combat more depth.

-Crazy environmental hazards and destructibility like past Twisted Metal games
I know this sounds simple, but sometimes simple things like this get overlooked. Blowing up the Eiffel Tower in Twisted Metal 2? Wicked. Glacier level collapsing over time and taking out opponents with it? Awesome.

Basically, that's my dream twisted metal. I don't know how I'd feel if it was open world like Burnout. I think I'd rather prefer something more "closed but open" in design like Warhawk. And I know a lot of the Eat, Sleep, Play developers worked on that game, and worked at Incognito, so I know they'll pull through regardless.

Yes. There are so many things this genre never attempted. Luxoflux needs to come back and make a new V8 too.

what about a grand theftish twisted metal?

I think when Jaffe was having his interview with hip hop gamer, he was asked "hypothetically, if you could do another twisted metal, how would it be" -- Jaffe then "hypothetically" gave a description that sounded a lot like the email in question.

the game is obviously twisted metal. it's pretty damn fuckin obvious.

This? Good God this is so intentional.

The two things are not related Liara. The 'leak' is not a leak. No one knows the name of our game or the genre or platform or what it is. So some thematic info leaked out, not a big deal to anyone.

The blog going on hiatus is just me wanting a break.

David

Yep. Can't wait! :D

I fully accept it divides opinion but I agree. Local MP was always a hoot. Especially when you win.

On topic... surely there'll be some presence at E3. Hmm.

I always get a good laugh when I read a thread that has Jaffe's name on it. Then I realize that I've added another view to this thread, and gave the guy some attention that he so desperately wants. Damn it.

Gimme Twisted Metal Online. That's all. PSN by the way! Digital over physical :|

Oh, but with a proper online of course. Twisted Metal Online in the PS2 wasn't very good, but the online in the PS2 also sucked so....

There are quite a few game developers that happen to post on GAF. But Jaffe comes off as a typical GAFfer who just happens to be a game developer.

I also consider Gary Whitta to be a GAFfer but he doesn't quite fit the archetype. But some may consider that to be a plus.

From what I read in the op that just sounds like the animations for the random human characters that walk about the levels. He probably wants them to get ripped apart by the cars in an awesome TM style. Like them being dragged behind your vehicle after you run them over or trying to get up and out of the way.

Hopefully it has nothing to do with an open world design. I don't see that working well with this style of gameplay at all. Oh, and don't even put horrible ideas in their heads about players being able to exit vehicles and roam around. Sweet Tooth in any other vehicle than his Ice Cream truck would be awful.

Then again it might work, who knows. I guess we'll have to see. I just don't want this franchise to lose something great in the move to an open world design like Burnout did.

One thing is for sure. Jaffe should include a story mode with short movies at the beginning, in the middle and in the end of the game/storymode, just like in TM:B!!!! I played through it just to know how these storys (of each character) ends. And they were awesome!!
Just TM without a story (and these movies) = meh.....! Do not want

I'll never understand why peope jizz and shit there pants and let it stew over David Jaffe. Never truly enjoyed a game of his.

Jaffe's working on a game with car combat and stuff? What a shocking turn of events! I could not have foreseen this in the least!

Please make Calling All Cars 2, dood. <3

I've never played any of his games, but he's one of the few people in the industry that are able to speak their mind. We don't get that a lot in the PR-controlled world.
