Death Stranding Review Thread

Diablo 3 is a looter with a completely different camera than Dark Souls, but it's possible Outer Worlds is getting compared to The Witcher 3. The thing is, games like TW3, Dark Souls and BOTW are the standard in the industry. I don't feel like I need to explain you that.

Unless you're comparing a couple of Ubisoft games, no game is ever going to be exactly the same as another. I'm sure DS doesn't play like BOTW, but not to the point it's radically different you can't compare them. Like comparing a FPS to a RTS.

Being the standard doesn't mean everything gets compared. When people loved Modern Warfare at launch no one was like "but how does it stack up to Half-Life 2, THE standard for FPS games?" They weren't even comparing it to fucking Doom.

As somebody that played it (and it is actually playing more of it) I will tell you that it is different from any game you ever played before.

Like I said useless and pointless comparisons won't help you understand Death Stranding's gameplay mechanics.

Yes just the part they are "somewhat similar".

I should say play it first before jump conclusions.
To start to understand how Death Stranding gameplay is the first step is realize it is not similar to any other game in the market.
Watched several hours of it and this is a prime example that being "different" in no way makes it a good game. The game looks rushed, unfinished, and i would wager Kojima to this day is not sure what the game is. Games need to be fun and exciting, not full of tedious, boring chores that feel like home work. Kojima should stick with MGS or PT. It is as close to walking simulator as it gets and its sad watching people actually defend this mess of a designed game.

"Watched..." is that to take you serious?
If you don't play it you will have no ideia how the gameplay is for bad or good.

The gameplay is not like any other game.in the market... you can't see how it works in videos... there are a lot of gameplay mechanics you are using when you watch the Sam walking in a steaming.

It just look like you are walking in videos.

I really understand now why the reviewers (good or bad) couldn't explain how the gameplay works... it is way different from what you are used and there is no way to say if you will love or hate it without you try.

But is it wrong to compare them? Like if Modern Warfare was getting praised for its uniqueness, you couldn't bring up DOOM? Why?

Fair enough man. I'll get back to you on that after I play it.

Fair enough man. I'll get back to you on that after I play it.

You'd get BTFO'd for saying "it's not unique because DOOM" because you'd be ignoring all the damn nuance in what made the game unique. Which is exactly what you guys are doing, the nuance in this isn't getting through to you at all.

BotW would have a metacritic score in the 60s or 70s were it not for the Zelda name
BOTW would stand on its own regardless of title. You see, unlike DS,it has a diverse, compelling world that is worth exploring with action, combat etc... Its main goal is not walking in a barren world full of nothing but mountains and rock delivering packages built 10 feet on your shoulder tapping R1/R2 to prevent swaying.

If people were saying "Modern Warfare is revolutionary and no game ever has done what it did", you flat out couldn't point out "well DOOM did something like that" or even "DOOM is still the better game"? I'm not even saying that's correct, it's very possible that the comparisons to BOTW are flat out wrong, but is it seriously so far fetched to bring it up?

Think about it this way, if 2 months from now someone creates a thread about DS being the game of the generation and someone mentions BOTW, you couldn't even start a conversation on that?

Easy to say when it has the Zelda name, right?

Especially since you play the same game over and over and over and over and over and over only because of nostalgia.

I strongly disagree. You don't need to play something when the gameplay is mostly about delivering packages to holograms. Combat barely exist. The world is static and empty. If its the US,where are the cities/towns?

There are cities and towns but the original ones were destroyed because spoilers.

Now you have the mind made up without playing so there is nothing to discuss here... it is clear you have absolutely no ideia how he game plays and you don't want to know how it is.

Because it's layered with all sorts of mechanics not present in Doom. Same with Death Stranding.

That's a different context, the argument for GOTG would obviously involve all sorts of games being compared that wouldn't normally warrant comparison.

It's easy to see that almost everybody who is playing is enjoying it, 99% of people.
I even see people that were negative or skeptical before and were not going to get it but decided to take a gamble and they ended up loving it.

The real cue that the people that are negative are just blind haters, is that nearly all of them are stuck in the review threads. Or on metacritic trying to bomb that userscore.

Watching walkthroughs, streams, reading impressions, reviews etc...is exactly how you don't blindly throw down 60 bucks to see if you like a game. Those avenues exist for a reasonn. I do know what the game is about and how it plays. It is about "connecting people through delivering packages and powering a grid across the nation. The problem is that its not fun. Walking in a barren world that mostly all looks the same(mountains/rock/streams)to deliver packages to hologrames with crates stacked 10 ft up while pressing L1/R1 to balance weight over and and over again is not good game design. Fun facter is crucial in game design. Combat hardly exist. The world is boring and empty. The gameplay is boring.

This thread is 47 pages, eventually we're going to run out of things to say and it's going to get slightly off topic. Fans and haters alike really care about Death Stranding so it's going to generate some passionate discussions that other games like Modern Warfare wouldn't warrant. And some of that discussion involves talking about other big games in the medium. I really don't think mentioning BOTW is any different than saying DS is "better than Spider-Man". Again, even if the comparison is wrong, it's just that, a comparison.

It all went straight over your head, didn't it?

You have no ideia how it plays it seems.

BTW you start the game near a city if you want I can take a picture for you.

To expand a little on my 8.5 score (10 for technicals, 7 for gameplay)

At about 12 hour mark and I’m not bored, but I’m also not entirely engaged. I am gonna play to the end for sure. I’m really curious where the story is going, I don’t know if I’ll replay on PC unless it’s just god-tier graphic upgrade

From all of your (positive) reactions, guys, I'm getting the impression that the game is very demanding of the player attention.
So, it does sound like after a while that would take its toll.

Do you think that the game will keep you engaged long term?

You know, setting aside different opinions on reviews and the game itself, one thing we can all agree on about Death Stranding being a thing that exists being fantastic is that...

all of them hollywood actors like Reedus, Mads, Leah plus all the cameos etc. are gonna be banging every single Overwatch character on pornhub once it release on PC next year.

Yeap, despite me don't liking the game, i think it's great that people are enjoying it. I love Kojima and i want to see him continuing his vision even if his outputs are not always to my liking and yeah, it's a good thing DS exists. It may have it's problems, but it can also be a canvas for other games to improve.

After a lot of the pre release footage and talk of it being a truck simulator/postman game, I went in with really low expectations.

I just started chapter 3, no idea on how far in that is but I’ve been hooked on it all day. It’s much better than I was expecting.

yea doesn't look very interesting at all
jim sterling is saying that there is not even a single game mechanic thats fun.
The game is clearly not for death stranding but he also seems to have zero appreciation for the good game mechanics that are in the game and there are tons. Traversing the world is SO MUCH different then in any open world game. U really pay attention to your enviroment here. The use of those ladders are great.

death stranding is a really immersive game unlike anything else and it really does not deserve those bad reviews. if the game is not for you thats fine but its not a bad game dam.

i'm loving the walking. so much planning, thinking how to get to point B is actually fun in this game lol

But really again. This game is absolutly not for everyone but its stupid that the reviewers who are not the type of players for this game are also giving it shit reviews..

question to those that got true the opening of the game

Curious what some of you thought when u got true that first hour

Positive review of 'The Irishman' , which has a 96 on RT

'"The Irishman" isn't a soaring achievement: It's a deliberate, thoughtful and somewhat muted one. No matter where that traveling camera goes, it subverts our expectations at every turn. Which can sometimes feel like a drag, but also exactly right. '

Unfortunately many of the critics here and elsewhere are unable to elevate their thinking above gamings cheap thrills.

Ok, i have a question does holding two shifts basically mitigates any balancing problems?

So far i can easily ascend and descent any hight just holding two shifts. Will it become more challenging further on?

I'm at the windmill station

How many times did I skip a cutscene in BOTW when entering a shrine!? IGN never complained about that though..... or the boring / crap food making. Or how annoying the weapon degradation was....

and they had nothing greater to say with all of these inconveniences.

IGN is just a Nintendo fanboy site now anyway.

At some points it gets a bit harder but later on you get more options like vehicles so going on foot is not required that much.

This all depends on how much cargo you carry. Try running around near your max cargo limit, or even over that. Not only will Sam lose stamina very fast, he'll also start staggering more. You can't crouch with too much cargo either, so going through a BT field with lots of cargo can be a pain in the ass. That is at least my experience so far.

Cleanprince is an idiot. Period.

In general, not even talking about DS. No idea why people even watch his videos.

The opening is pretty good.
It is probably the most fast paced part of the game.

It make the balance right no matter what but Sam become too slow.
Pressing L2 or R2 at right time give you the balance back faster without Sam lose speed.
I normally don't hold L2 + R2 all time, when I'm loosing balance I hit L2 or R2 to correct the balance without lose speed.
In drastic cases or defending a mountain I hold L2 + R2... the amounts of weight in Sam's back make me use more the hold L2 + R2.

Another thing about balance... where you put the packages or how you distribute them in your back, hands, and others possible places give you better or worst balance... sometimes a ladder half-opened in one of your back sides correct the balance and makes the walking so much better.

If you don't want to deal with how to distribute the weight in your body you can open the Menu and choose to automatic reviewer the packages... it does a pretty good job and walking become better.

My problem is that holding two shifts trivialises other systems. It doesn't reduce speed that much, it doesn't consume stamina, there's no point in distributing weight - just put everything on your back. Why would i even hold anything in my arms?

With two shifts you can easily slide down slopes not losing balance, you can basically do everything without any trade off.

That's my experience so far

You can't sprint though, so it takes longer to cross long distances.
That's okay when you start the game, but gradually you'll start finding a balance between regular walking and hold those buttons. Otherwise the game becomes a drag. Lol

That's my experience, at least.

I understand what are you saying but it really become too slow for traveling... you will feel tired of walking.

And you are right if you hold them all the time you don't need to care with the cargo arrangements.
