December 2013 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes January 13

Almost 4 million in a single month... :O How was that even possible, I take it that is the record for one consoles hardware sales in a single NPD ?.

It is, indeed. The runner-up is the DS, that same month, with 3.3m.

Here are all the other times a system has broken 2 million in a month:

PS2, Dec 2002
GBA, Dec 2002
GBA, Dec 2003
GBA, Dec 2004
DS, Dec 2007
Wii, Nov 2008
Wii, Dec 2008
DS, Dec 2008
Wii, Dec 2010
DS, Dec 2010

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

That struggling consoles chart....
I did't know Wii U was tracking behind the Dreamcast. I just can't believe it.

Not that it's sales are anything to be proud of, but technically it's tracking slightly ahead of Dreamcast on that chart, because it does not include December Numbers for Wii U.

The Wii U sold 55.750 units per week in November (November is 4 weeks).

December includes 5 weeks, so if we take the same pace the Wii U should be around 278.750 units.

http://www.google.de/trends/explore#q=wii+u&geo=US

Googles search interest index for the Wii U in December was at 62 compared to 46 in November (factor 1,35).

Going by this calculation, Wii U could've sold 376.313 units. (278.750 × 1,35)

y = 2x + 3, n = 4
If we increase the factor of n by 3, Wii U's sales should have increased by 1.98x, as modeled by the equation 4999e ^0.8t, where t is 1 month.

If you end up being right, I'll laugh at myself and eat crow

Generally speaking, December sales are normally about double November's. 1.35x would be abysmal. That normally only happens with severe supply constraints, or if November was launch (which was the case with PS4 and XB1 this year, of course).

That's not really how sales charts work. You can compare the DC and Wii U up until November and its still accurate and the Wii U is still tracking under the DC.

From what I hear, the numbers are available already for those who have access.

During NPD day I give Twitter more views than I do in all the other days of the month combined.

Pathetic in every possible way.

Also, I wonder how many threads will be created today before the "official" one. =P

It always depends.

The fact that it's not selling means it should dominate a console constantly sold out?

I don't see your logic.

I never said XB1 was not selling. The fact MS keep up with the demand in its biggest support and world biggest market would lead to believe it would dominate PS4 which was supply constrained and US was its weakest market out of big 3.

I'm with the Xbone crowd, PS4 may have sold more worldwide but I think MS is gonna win US numbers in December.

What's your definition of "dominate?"

Sony says: "According to NPD, PS4 remains the cumulative leader for next gen console sales in the U.S. since the launch on November 15."

Sony goes on to say "we were out of stock," but doesn't say PS4 outsold Xbox One in December.

It didn't if that's the language they are using.

So probably 3DS > XBO > PS4 > Wii U

And 3DS is around 1.000.000

I'm gonna bet 3DS > XBO > PS4 > 360 > PS3 > Wii U > Wii > Vita

Generally speaking, December sales are normally about double November's.

Since the economic collapse in October 2008, retailers have been trying to get what little money people have out of their wallets ASAP, so they've been majorly pushing up November advertising to get that first (and sometimes last) buck from consumer pockets. That's led to a decrease in December multipliers, I think.

Excellent visual example of the post-2008 November retailer push adjusting historical trends. :)
