Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon officially announced w/ Raidho!

Great to know the first installment had a solid technological foundation. I also knew Odin Sphere wasn't Atlus developed. :)

Good that you knew it. =) Very few games are as big technological disasters as Odin Sphere, not even Vanillaware's other games.

Solid technological base... eh. The pre-rendered backgrounds are kind of sloppy, and there's no voice acting, but aside from those it was solid. Menus and loads were pretty fast, and Raidou 2 is said to be even faster.

Preordered yesterday the moment I received the notice from Atlus. Though I have to send it to my parents as I'll be moving to Germany when the game ships =/

They're gonna take your Raihou!

I'm going to switch one of my preorders at Gamestop over to this later today. Also picked up the original off Ebay earlier. Atlus will provide! :D

NOW GIVE ME MY RAIHO!

Something I don't get; is the game going to be sold exclusively through amazon or just the bundle with the pluche?

Not exclusive. The usual Atlus carrying retailers will have this game. The limited launch copies will have the plush.

I believe that the Japanese version didn't have any voice over work. Is that true for the US version as well?

Probably. I think it would be pretty rare to add in VA for a game that didn't originally have it. Then again, maybe Nich might comment and prove me wrong! (though I'm pretty sure the first didn't have it either)

The most notable example would be Dragon Quest VIII. For me, the additional voice acting made the game for, especially the different accents. Of course, Dragon Quest VIII is a more important game. I doubt that Devil Summoner 2 will have voice acting, but that would be nice.

Yeah, I love me some VA just because I might look at my computer or something while playing, but still can tell what's going on. Either way is fine by me, though.

Weren't there specific cut scenes in FFXII that were given VA in the NA/Euro release that werent in the Jap version?

In any event, not having voice work in a SMT game seems to be the norm, in this case, as was the case in the first DS, the translation will make the grade.

EDIT: Beaten, it was DQVIII I was thinking of.

don't know if I should create another thread for this or not, but as soon as I pre-ordered this, I hopped over to the DoubleJump books board to see if there was any talk about a guide for this game!

someone had already started a thread about it, and after a couple of posts we got a response...

http://www.doublejumpbooks.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=5817.0

djpubba (admin) says:
Since this is an "extremely limited" release, a print guide is not going to be possible. An e-guide, maybe. Would you pay $10 for an electronic guide which you could view in any browser, share with friends and print, but not download as a PDF?

A few have already enthusiastically responded YES to this, but I would ask any of you who are interested, PLEASE go over to the boards and let them KNOW we want a doublejump guide for this game regardless of how we get it!

I'm not sure if this is the most recent thread about the game, but a new e-mail about it!

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2's vastly improved combat system
Why Devil Summoner 2 will feel a heck of a lot like Devil Summoner 3

devilsummoner2_5raihodance.gif

Faithful, let us speak in riddles. What is incredibly improved over its predecessor, bundled with a rare collectible plushie, and poised to be one of the best RPGs of 2009? Yes, my first instinct was also "newspaper," followed immediately by "the wind," but then I realized it could only be SMT: Devil Summoner 2 for PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system.

Combat is completely overhauled. What was once a slow-paced, experimental attempt at a real-time SMT game is now a refined, action-packed demonstration of how this kind of game should be done. A new "dodge roll" maneuver allows you to deftly span the battleground, avoiding your enemies' attacks and putting yourself in the right location to launch your retaliation. Because two is better than one (unless you're talking about paper cuts), you can now command two demons in battle, strategically exploiting their strengths in order to come out on top. Getting overwhelmed? Just hold down a button to hide your demons and protect them from damage until the danger is over.

More is also better (as long as you're not talking about weights on your chest, crushing the life out of you), so there is more of everything. More weapons to wield, each now with a unique special attack in the hands of Raidou. More enemy types, about twice as many, actually. More attacks for the demons in your control, and the ability to activate multiple such abilities so that they are available in battle, meaning that demon fusion is vastly more complex and vital to your success. More intelligent demons means your summoned pals can be set to repeat a certain attack, but they won't bother repeating an effect spell until the current effect has worn off, thus saving time.

And the best part, Faithful? Demon negotiation. Instead of wiping your foes out, talk to them, charm them, berate them. In short, tell them what they want to hear -- which is an art in and of itself -- and maybe they'll give you an item, or better yet, join your party and lend you their unique abilities in battle. On top of all of that, the up to two demons you can bring into battles can assist you in your negotiations, using special tactics that can win over your potential new acquisition.

My, my, what a difference a sequel makes. And to really hammer the point home, Faithful, we'll mention yet again that all launch copies come with a free collectible Raiho plushie. That's right, each and every launch copy of SMT: Devil Summoner 2 includes a cuddly, wuddly (or menacing, if you prefer) Raiho plushie. Quantities are very limited! Pre-ordering is a good way to secure yourself the complete set! Exclamation point!

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon ships into retailers across North America on May 12th.

Poor Raiho!

Sole shipment of limited edition Raiho plushies hijacked by pirates, feared lost
They will dance their sweet dance no more...

Faithful, we received word this morning that sea pirates have hijacked a cargo ship carrying the sole shipment of Raiho plushies. Destined to be one of the best premium bonus items ever bundled with a video game, these plushies are now feared lost at sea.

During an emergency press conference today, Atlus had this to say:

"Today is a somber day for Atlus. Nearly 4.6 tons of Raiho, our ultra-collectible bonus for Devil Summoner 2, have been plush-napped. The pirates responsible have made a list of demands and offered numerous overt threats as to the safety of the Raihos. While it pains us gravely, and it no doubt disappoints the fans, we remain strong in our resolve and maintain our corporate policy: Atlus does not negotiate with sea pirates. Let us think of the plushies as they were... cute, stuffed, and delightful."

I know what today is :p

I pre-ordered this, and ordered the previous Devil Summoner on the PS2, along with Digital Devil Saga.

I've never played any of these games, but I like Shin Megami Tensei.

I'm gonna have to have someone pre-order the game for me back home. Because man, I get home on May 1 and by that time they probably won't be taking pre-orders right?

They actually take pre-orders up to like...a day or two before release. The only issue with this is if you'll get in on the first shipment which includes the Raihos.

They're now available at Walmart.com too, so this is becoming more likely.

Well, I'm playing through the (Japanese version of the) game now so I can do a review on it before it comes out for my school paper. This generation's SMT games have the best game over sequences. Raidou's ancestors telling him how much of a disappointment he is made me laugh. :D

I'm about 4 hours in,
chasing Tatsumi into the ikai or whatever they're calling it in the US versions.
I still haven't touched the last DS game, but I really like the battle system.

I'm playing through the first game (currently on episode 7) and I really didn't expect it to be so awesome. The sequel is now my most anticipated game this season.

Just got past the first chapter. Looks like there are mini-quizzes, kind of like Trace Memory/Hotel Dusk, only shorter (one or two questions.) I'm overleveled now, since I spent way too much time screwing around in that last dungeon. Well, I got two real bruiser demons with Dia and each has an elemental spell. Is there any way to interrupt an enemy's spellcasting, other than killing it?

White Rider is the new Matador. It's supposed to be optional, but it attacks so damn constantly that you eeither kill it or give up half your demons every 10 minutes or so.

The fire spell is annoying,. You either block or get smt'd.
