[DF] Elden Ring performance: what to expect on PS5, Series X/S and PC

I don't know where these bad experiences from the PC is coming from. Either I have a well built system or people are using hyperbole or they don't have well built systems.

I have the following specs:

RTX 3090
AMD 3950X
64G RAM
Samsung EVO970+ Pcie 4.0 SSD

All graphics options are MAX
My microstutters are largely during open world spots and their duration is extremely short.
I don't mean to handwave other people's concerns but I have a 2080ti and 32 GB of RAM and while there ARE multiple framedrops, you can hardly call it a 'broken unplayable mess' like some people do.

But I can't say that the game's optimized, either. It isn't, and it's painfully obvious it needed 2-4 months of work to polish.

I mean, you're literally showing a PC that maybe less than 4 to 5 % of PC gamers might have.

You're in the extreme minority but regardless there's enough people talking about performance issues on 20xx and 3070/80 series cards that we can't call them all hyperbolic or liars. Alex from DF wouldn't have any reason to lie about the bad optimization, if anything he'd be flaunting it over the console versions everywhere.

After playing Horizon this feels so PS3. Sterile, no interactivity, grass don't move and yet it's Horizon's graphics that got nitpicked relentlessly 🤡 I will never understand what happened there 😤

The gameplay is also the exact same. Like I already played this game several times before lol
10/10

It really looks like a mid gen PS4 title at best, and that’s being generous.

after some tinkering, I’ve sorted my pc version and I only have the frame rate stutter when moving to a new area, the rest of the time it’s locked 60fps And extremely playable.

it turns out that it’s a good idea not to update your motherboards bios and then try and use overclock pre saved settings from like 3 years ago from an old bios revision to OC your system, that coupled with recently installing an elgato wave 3 mic and wave lab software was messing with my pc. Basically it’s like a 4 year old windows 10 install that needs a fresh wipe but I can’t be bothered because my 12900k build arrives in a couple of weeks.

I am completely in the camp of the pc version being more hyperbole, but we do have high end rigs. The stutters suck and need to be patched asaps but once they are there will be no denying how amazing this game is. I was dreaming about it and can’t wait to get back on.

More like 0.43%.

I played this for a couple of hours last night on Series X with a VRR TV.

Seems fine to me.

From seem to be terrible at making their games work, but even at their worst, people just accept it anyway.

Looking at posts on here, I'm not sure why this game has become a console wars battleground, but it's pretty weird to see people orgasming because their preferred console gets closer to 60fps in some situations. The game looks, plays and performs like the other From games you've already played - good art direction, Souls gameplay and iffy tech.

My little VRR pleasure pearl goes vrrrooommm.
I managed a few hours on Series X last night, it was buttery smooth. VRR counter was saying about 48-60fps during gameplay and around 40-50fps during cut scenes where you control nothing anyway.
Obviously all in performance mode with 120hz output forced.

My game runs perfectly on my 1080ti.
Nvidia control panel -> Shader cache size -> unlimited is the only thing I've changed before playing the game. Only get fps spikes when new big area loads, for like 1 second.
There's no bottleneck on my pc.

The reason for my comment is that people are saying "high-end" PCs. I'm assuming these examples include setups like mines.

No worries. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Yup. That was the reason for my statements. I'm glad someone didn't just troll my comments due to biases.

I set my output to 60hz cuz John from DF said it actually helps with motion blur or some shit oddly enough 🤷‍♂️ But yeah so far so good on xsx

I didn't bother with that, if a game has frametime problems then forced 120hz output with LFC gives you a better ride, it seems fine to me anyway.
As for loading seems to be around six seconds for me, it's fine.

Doesnt need recognition
It's good enough on Series S.

Ofcourse I would want a locked 60fps but I can deal with how it is. Dare I say I'm happy for how it runs.

FWIW I set my expectation bar very low because it's From

I was also satisfied with the S version, but found the 30 mode to be stable and much sharper and switched to that after a couple hours of performance only. Now I’m on X though in performance

Hmm! I haven't thought about trying it's quality mode. I'll check it out later today. My feeling is that I prefer unlocked framemode with all the random stuttering over 30fps.. Hmm. Will report back.

Series S performance feels a lot like DS3 on Pro and in can live with that

Post a video of stutters every few seconds on PS5 (as you're claiming), because I think it's pure hyperbole
Have you played the ps5 version? It's not hyperbole as others have backed up. Even if I showed you video, would you even see the stutters happening constantly? Because they literally are and you clearly can't see them so why would me showing you footage change that?

If you really want to see it just play the game on Ps5 lol. Every 1-2 seconds is how it's been no matter where I am in the game.

You are not helping console gamers in being taken seriously by developers by waving away issues that you're apparently blind to. This is the reason PC gamers get their patches before us as has already happened with Eldin Ring. Imagine if ps5/series x owners kicked up the same fuss as PC. They don't tolerate terrible performance but we do despite paying pretty good money for the latest systems. It's not PC 3080 money buy still, we bought them for better performance. If we were OK with ps4 pro level of performance we would stuck with ps4 pro.

This is unacceptable performance so stop giving developers an excuse to keep treating console like we don't matter.

Six hours in on XS and I it runs great. there is stutter at the very starting area, but the more I play, the less it is happening for me. Think I saw another poster say this and I am having the same experience. What seems odd is some of the areas I have been to would seem much more taxing than the first area, but smooth as butter. Such a great game.

Thanks for emphasising your platform preference for this game once again John. What is so 'baffling' about a game loading quicker on a machine whose decompressor is about three times more powerful and its SSD more than twice faster exactly?

This game is not using well all this fancy PS5 decompression hardware, PS4 version loads only a bit worse than PS5 version. AND SSD speed have nothing to do with it TOO! I did my comparison with PS4 version running from USB 3.0 SSD!

PS5:

PS4 BC:

From really screwed up Xbox version for no apparent reason.

This game needs to get review bombed to hell, performance sucks and to top it all off you can lose your whole fucking progress. Considering the type of game it is it just really is unacceptable imo.

Because it loads almost as fast as the PS5 on a regular PC with a slow Gen 3 drive? Obviously something is amiss with the Series versions.

I have roughly 17 hours with the PC version. Load times are great, 6-8 secs max on an older NVME drive. Stuttering is there but it seems to lessen as times go on. There are areas that stutter will happen regardless of what's on screen. That said, overall it still runs acceptably. Not great, I've played worse ports before. I'm having a really good time with it and can't wait to jump back in later today.

The stuttering needs to be fixed and ultrawide needs to be added. The fact that modded ultrawide happened in literally hours of release doesn't suprise me, but it does disappoint me that FS won't patch it in officially considering if I use the mod to get ultrawide support I have to play offline, and I LOVE the online features.

If I had to grade the port, I'd give it a C-. If I had to grade the content, I'd give it a solid A.

Let's just see the technical flaws from another perspective. Souls games are for people that like to torchure themselves. So the technical flaws are part of the experience. ;)

SSD do makes difference in this game.
PC with SSD PCI-E 3.0 has loading close to Series X while SSD PCI-E 4.0 close to PS5.

As if anyone needs more evidence that the Series version was not anywhere close to From's priority, a network check issue is straight up preventing some people from playing the game with no acknowledgment from From Soft.

What you need to know

  • Elden Ring is the latest action RPG from Dark Souls devs FromSoftware.
  • The game is unfortunately broken for many on Xbox now, with offline services not working.
  • So far, Bandai Namco has yet to acknowledge the issue.

The state of the Xbox version is pretty disappointing considering Sekiro was extremely competent on launch on both PS4/Pro and Xbox One/X.

So not anything to do with hardware and everything to do with FROM 'not liking' xbox platform huh?..

That would be the first time. In most games there is even close to no difference between NVME and SATA SSD:

Everything is CPU limited in loading

They clearly can't code their games properly, this is evident since original DeS. Now they have shit ton of platforms to work with and Xbox got the least amount of love. There is no hardware reason for this game to load like this on Series consoles.

Is HDR working correctly on PC? When I play on a PC monitor turning on HDR in the menu doesn't do anything according according to MSI Afterburner. When I play on my QLED HDR works.

Sorry but i don't understand how you can talk with that much certainty and authority. Do you have some kind of inside knowledge? Are you a game developer?

The game does have some stutter issues on PC at times, usually it's only for 1-2 seconds but occasionally it hits multiple times in a row. If someone calls it unplayable they're lying, it's not THAT bad.

No. But I tried this game myself and SSD with real life speed of ~500MB/s loads PS4 version in around the same speed that native PS5 version loads from 5GB/s internal SSD. Loading looks CPU limited to me, Xbox has pretty much the same CPU and there is no reason at all for Xbox with 2GB/s drive to load 3x times longer than PS5 version.

I don't know why is this happening but it's happening.

Not bad? It's ridiculus.

YES. This isn't "10/10 best game ever" in the state it was released, and people shouldn't overlook this issues as From will never fix them.
