DF: Ultra Street Fighter 2 Switch! Full Analysis

Huh, bunch of weird differences between the versions. Like, good on them for cleaning up the sprites if you're forcing the zoomed in 16:9 view but then come background elements are static? Nice that they make the level and characters retro if you pick that option but the HUD stays HD?

It is nice that the HUD and character select stuff is more faithful to the original than in HD Remix. I didn't mind it in HD Remix but just thought it was odd.

The price will kill this though. And I guess the lack of D-pad in portable mode (I don't have a Switch yet and not used one but I just can't see me enjoying the buttons in place of a dpad).

I swore I wouldn't, I'm feeling the urge to buy this now that I can play it with an SNES controller.

I'm part of the problem. 😔

It looks like a bootleg version of SF4 Ryu.

I like it, very clear and detailed:

Why do you seem to really love this trash mini-game? lol
It's just funny to see someone so enthusiastic about it.

Just watched the video... It's nice that they cleaned up the sprites, gave it the old style HUD (I always thought HDR's looked like amateur hour), and restored the original character portraits. The option to switch between classic or HD graphics and sounds are rad too. They might have had me because nostalgia's one hell of a drug.

The one thing I can't forgive is removing the background animations from Ryu and Ken's stages. Why were they removed? It doesn't make any sense other than "Capcom's gonna Capcom."

Ono: Remove those
Developer: But why Ono?

That HD intro is trash and shows how the rest of the HD conversion lacks the quality of the original. The left arm is static, right arm uses a cheap rotation, clothes are static too, the full animation has less frames... it sucks

The Super SF2 intro is def much better. It was simple and epic.

I'm not a fan of the Super Turbo intro personally. Even the original is goofy with all the cuts and the weird Cammy tongue thing.

Saw the initial announcement and was like I'm in. Plus I'm not as super picky about art and animations as others. HD remix was fine for me.

Then I saw the gameplay and I was like hmmm seems slow, but whatever I'm still in.

Price came out and I'm like woah $40? Seems high, but maybe Capcom gonna go all out.

Then see the features and the half-assed attempt. Ugh...

Also see no difference in price physical/digital. Ugh...

See reviews like Capcom phoned this in. Ugh

STILL woke up today with the itch to get my Chun Li on.

DF drops truth bomb video on just how half-assed this really is. Back to ugh I should skip this on principal.

It's so weird that they built that 3D stuff for a crappy mini game. Is this groundwork for a 3D SF game coming to Switch later?

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a patch fixing some of these issues. The lack of animating backgrounds, that has to be a bug/oversight, I can't think of any other reason for it - I mean, the background people are still animating, it's just big background elements aren't scrolling, that's not a performance issue. And adding audio options separating music and sound options would be pretty easy as well.

Are you really using this excuse

even those ports of garou and last blade on PS4 , vita and PC have online and garou costs £12 on PSN

I'm sure we can all agree that USF2 is overpriced as fuck.

I mean, you can't defend that, there's just no way.

He/she's just mentioning that USF2 has online compared to the NEO-GEO ports, and that's true, also I think that they are locked to their MVS version, too.

It's nothing that warrants the enormous price of USF2 though, but it's still a point.

I ended up getting this, but paid $26.99 so I feel okay(ish) about it. GCU took it down to $31.99 and then I had a $5 reward to use too.

Any mention of the game not filling the switch's screen even in the new graphics?, It's understandable in the old graphics - but it shouldn't happen on the new ones.

I know a lot of people are unhappy with the game. But I want it. I haven't played Street Fighter since I was in high school on the SNESl. I'm torn.

As I think we've all said to death, this would have been a perfectly acceptable £15-£20 title. But the fact that it's missing features and is a bit of a bizarre mishmash, particularly on the audio front, is just unacceptable.

Call me when Capcom ask £40 for a copy of Third Strike Online, I'll probably bite then...

Such a shame at that price point, even with a few things here and there I dont like about this release, I would've picked it up day 1 $15 or $20. $40 is just ridiculous for a decades old game. I hope it bombs and drops in price soon.

Disgusting fucking price. It's a $10 eShop only game. Fuck Nintendo, Capcom and whoever else thought it would be good to rub the customers faces in putrid feces.

Get off your goddamn high horses, anyfuckingone involved in this goddamn fuckery.

So it's a port of an old game. Glad we know that now, which weirdly everyone was acting blind about. Yes, the HUD changed a bit and yes the portraits are better, and yes they have two different sprites for Ken and Ryu as their own characters, but it's the same game.

Now, I'm not a crazy person who thinks the HD Udon art is better than the the OG art (though I do appreciate Udon making Ken look more distinct from Ryu) but I am a crazy person who didn't hate Udon's art. Considering Udon never made sprites for a game before and never probably had to animate anything ever I think they did alright. While some of the shortcuts taken were the result of the making of the HD art for SF2 being a bit of a boondoggle for Capcom due to Udon's inexperience, many of the shortcuts taken were also the result of XBLA game size restrictions of that time.

Having said that, I wish whoever made the sprites for Ken, Ryu, Akuma and M. Bison in the CVS games made the HD SF2 visuals:

Bison and Ken in particular look so good! (NOTE: The above gifs aren't actually the best representations of the sprite animations in the CVS games. Youtube CVS)

I wonder why DF didn't go into the ugly non-neighbor scaling in Classic mode. They mentioned them in their analysis of Blaster Master.

720p should be a clean 3X scale of 240p, but there's some aspect ratio correction that I assume messes with it. Classic mode should have had some kind of optional CRT shader or something to make it look a little nicer.
