I was always a fan of Blood: The last vampire and Blood+. And Inuyasha. Before you start, I don't care if they're for girls, I like em.
seen blood the last vampire and first 30 episode of inuyasha. didn't click with but it was fun.
Why isnt Dragon Ball Z on your list?
DB is meh.
but i know that US love it to hell.

I thought the same thing at first. A friend of mine wanted me to watch it and turned it on for me. I thought I'd have to suffer through it (even a good ways through the first episode), but it really picked up, and I started laughing way more than I thought I would. But, yeah, not for kiddies.

All of the other good ones seemed to have been named here. Just making sure another great one got a mention.
is it like ping pong club ?! because i loved it.
not for adult x100 :p

I managed to watch 50 episodes and I just threw in the the towel. First 20 episodes is good, 30 alright, and around 40 it gets stale...very stale. The pace was too slow for me and the suspense gradually faded away...

:( it gets way better after 50. I remember people complaining how it gets really slow around 50 and I agree but after a few episodes it picks up again.

Well I just watched Ponyo on Netflix streaming. That was the kiddiest Ghibli film I ever saw. Most of the other films have adult elements lol. I'm not complaining or anything as I already knew the plot kind of.

All right, not bad. I was just unclear on what your history with anime was. :p

Btw, original DB is good. It's miles above the quality of DBZ.

I used to disagree with this because I enjoyed hearing voices and seeing it in color but I read through it this past month and enjoyed reading it more than I did watching it.

I couldn't disagree more with that statement. The direction, pacing, animation and music are excellent.

People who find the anime too slow should obviously do that, but I'd say you're getting bored too easily. It's great either way.

Also, there are hundreds of great titles, and hundreds more mealy good titles to see. Obviously.

It's a good suggestion to people who find the anime to slow. Although i never had a problem with the pacing myself.

I prefer the creator's original vision over an anime adaptation that merely manages to be faithful, rather than brilliant. It doesn't improve on the manga and is only preferable if you just prefer animation to manga in general. Just my opinion.

Mumei

I think if you liked the initial story of Monster, but felt like it was taking too long for things to happen because of vignettes or characters whose importance wasn't absolutely necessary or readily apparent, I do think that the manga would be better just because you can set your own pace.

But I preferred the anime for the reasons Jexhius mentioned - I think that the direction, pacing, animation and music are all excellent and do a lot for the series' immersion that might be lost if you skimmed through it.

Fair enough, but I disagree. It manages to be faithful and brilliant. Adapting those scenes into a televised format wasn't simply a case of straight up copying. I'd say it even improves the work because it brings the mood of the piece to life in the ways I've mentioned.

Then again, the story can meander, which is why I imagine a sizeable chunk of viewers prefer the manga. Which is why the standard advice ends up "Start with the anime and then, if you need to , switch to the manga".

I watched this and I disagree. Don't bother with it because you will just be confused and you will get irritated. I should have stopped after the first few episodes but I watched it all :(

We'll just agree that Monster is excellent. I did watch the anime in the end and enjoyed it, but still found the manga to be the better, more focused experience overall.

Lain is great. Disturbing as all fuck... UGH

Just thinking about it makes me want to watch that acid trip all over again.

Also gonna come and say that the anime of Monster is something special. A real nailbiter of a story that keeps you coming back for more. Really excellent mystery and drama. Best of all it has some very interesting characters. Its a show where I watched five episodes a night and still wanted to see more.

Hearing how good the Manga is I think I want to check it out instead of rewatching the show again. I also don't have time to sit through 75 eps. I am kind of excited because I don't remember like 75% of what happened in it so it should feel somewhat fresh.

Nice thing about starting one of his series is that you can then, eventually, work your way up to Pluto.

You monster fans have way too much patience for filler. Nobody should have to watch 70+ eps just for a good payoff at the end.

I think you're conflating "filler" with : "world-building", "character-development" and "story progression".

Filler is where something unrelated to any of the above happens. Even when the central character was just travelling around talking to people, we were learning more about him and the show was always referring back to it's central message.

The pay-off was not just at the end, it was everything in-between that led to that payoff, without the travelling the destination wouldn't have been so rewarding.

Finally. "70 episodes" is just a big number, it's not actually a useful measure of time. That's about the length of 1.5 full seasons of a regular television show, which isn't very long at all. Especially when those are often nothing but stand-alone events (although recently we've had an amazing amount of great drama on TV).

I did a quick look at Anime News Network for Pluto Manga and it sounds interesting. I don't know a thing about Astro Boy though. Sounds very different than Monster. Is it really good? If so I am gonna check it out as soon as I am done with Monster.

Gundam ofcourse, Gundam is always good man. I get a anime burnout every day lol but Gundam stays fun to watch.

And I everytime hear people talk about Monster, gonna watch it soon to see if it is finally an anime that rivals MS Gundam since Gundam is tha best, most popular and money making anime EVER. It's so awesome that even Santa can't bring me a real one but that doesn't matter because the series is satisfying enough for me.
Yeah if it wasn't obvious, I really like Gundam. :D

Oh god no. I would've put my head under a lawnmower if I actually watched that while under the influence.

I would've jumped off a building. There were times in that series where there was true fear in my heart. Lain was covering things that were way ahead of its time. It started off very slow and confusing, but once things get started... omfg.

And the ending? I cried.

No, not manly bro-tears either.

Its not a 'casual' show at all though. If you're looking for something with fun loving bit every now and then, it never comes.

You just missed the best character in the whole medium

this is just few of his quotes:

"Why? Is there anything in it for us? If you were a woman, I could expect a kiss or so, but you're a guy! On the contrary, you could just die there. I mean, just die. It is your destiny to die here!"

Depending on your request, whether I will laugh or get angry, that will decide your lifespan, boy

and you missed the second best charcter in the whole medium:

Let me show you! I really don't like you! Since I don't, I'll CLOBBER you! I'm gonna beat you as much as I want to, you hear me!? I'M GONNA HURT YOU OVER AND OVER AGAIN! What's wrong with that, huh? Tell me! You can't, can you!? You should be GRATEFUL! Thanks to my unbelievable attack, you don't have to offer any more of your pathetic EXCUSES!

I still don't buy it. In those "on the road" episodes you got like one little nugget of new info per ep. It's hardly worth sitting through a boring story for 25 mins just to get that.

I believe that if you were only "looking for info" you may have been missing the point of those episodes, as that would be a rather superficial reading.

Whether their point of these episodes (the shows message) was good or bad is up to you, but they certainly weren't just devices to deliver content relating to the main story arc.

Not that this needs to be the "defend great anime" thread.

Of course not. The point of any show should be to entertain and I was not entertained by ~80% of the episodes I saw.
