Digital Foundry - Assassin's Creed Unity patch analysed

I think it's hard for me to take any DF article seriously that's written by Richard Leadbetter. Specially, when it involves the PS4.

I guess, Ubisoft is doing something at least.

*lol*

That was a joke but still 30fps is such an arbitrary number. If NTSC had been 50hz instead of 60hz that magic number would be 25fps nowadays, even if nobody cares about these old standards anymore.

Patch wasn't meant to improve general performance. It seems to fix some of the bad dips though.

Anyway, just got my copy and will enjoy it at 25fps, sounds like a great framerate to me. We Europeans are accustomed to 50hz TVs anyway, so 25fps is our 30fps (never understood how 30fps is a great framerate for most games while 25fps is absolutely unplayable).

HD video games run at 60hz on European TVs, too. 25fps on a 60Hz 1080p HDTV will not run smoothly.

The point of 30 fps games is that they're running at half the refresh rate of your TV and will be perfectly synced. Anything less introduces judder or tearing.

So dumb.
The game was developed to sell on its screenshots. Official ones, not the freaky hairy lippy monsters ones.
"but the hardware won't be able to manage all this!
-Nevermind, do this anyway! more effects! more NPCs! More incredibly next-gen lighting features!"

The sad part is that the game probably sold millions.

At this point I do agree that the game will be shit graphically and performance wise, no matter what they will do. I just hope people won't buy what is at best a broken product, because it is the only way shit like this will stop with Ubi, AC and industry in general.
I don't think we'll ever see the day that we don't see any games that perform sub-par. Deadlines, release window competition, production costs and the *need* to recoup those costs will always mean we see games put out that aren't in the best shape.

I don't think its fair to say that the game is 'broken at best'. At best, from what people playing it have said, its a pretty good AC game that just has performance problems. At worst, its broken. Really depends on your sensitivity to this stuff. I used to be able to play games with terrible performance just fine. Cant anymore, but I'm sure there's still lots who can.

Far Cry 4 seems to be quite a good effort, on the other hand. Watch Dogs also performs quite well. Its clear that Ubisoft can put out, and care about putting out games that perform well. I think they just stuffed the boat with Unity. I wont be buying it(not anytime soon, at least), but I don't have any issue with others buying it if they really want to. I am glad to see more people with increasing standards, though.

The message has already been sent to Ubisoft loud and clear. They're already losing money due to low launch sales of AC Unity. Not to mention, they are getting raked through the coals throughout gaming media. I hadn't seen a company get this amount of scrutiny, since the launch of the DMR featured Xbox One.

Trust me, Ubisoft will have to change course. The fact they're already giving out for free, two of their new titles (Far Cry 4, The Crew) to season pass owners, speaks volumes.

Yeah, it does, that they presume people will be persuaded with free stuff easily. It isn't even a month since the launch and if people start buying it they will just say, hey look we fixed it and it is business as usual. At least give it time for the quarter to finish so they really see it in their finances, or buy used copies.

25FPS as average framerate. God damn, that got to be the most cinematic game ever released. I guess it looks amazing.

It's just shit that you guys have to play it as well. You might just watch a YouTube walkthrough, the level of enjoyment probably is the same.

You know I think I might actually do that...

What? 50hz its a thing from the early 90s

it's not an arbitrary number.
Your current 1080p TV refreshes at 60Hz. a new image every 16milliseconds.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

30FPS means a new image every second time your TV would display a new frame.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | |

25FPS means refresh rate and frame rate don't match up to a proper ratio

| | | | | ' ; | | | | | | |

you get tearing and judder

it's anything but arbitrary

if modern TVs would display at 50hz, we'd argue about 25 vs 50 fps.

It might be an increase of 1FPS, but it's the 1FPS of doom. The game just went from that cushy cinematic sweet spot to juddery trash.

They just basically removed the lighting effect that made the game look good. It doesn't even look amazing anymore.

And they only gained a marginal fps improvement.

Most modern TVs here (don't know about the US) come in multiples of 100hz.

Wtf are you talking about? They haven't removed anything.

So what. Videogames still don't run in 25Hz/50Hz on European HDTVs.

the PS4 outputs at a frequency of 60Hz (59.94 Hz to be exact) though. It has nothing to do with the capabilities of your TV.

you can have a 4000hz TV. If it gets a torn image from your PS4, there's nothing it could do about that.

What?! :(

That is some next level nonsense. (If you are serious)

Well get it used then. Dont reward this kind of shit man. I enjoy AC as well but at least make a stand or something. You gonna new buy this your letting Ubisoft know its okay to launch a broken gane.

I'd say the massive backlash, huge stock price drop and the outrage of the entirety of the internet as well as some main stream publications...coupled with their damage control blog, patches and free game giveaway is proof positive of the situation not being okay, or being 'accepted' in any way.

But keep fighting the good fight my man.

Game is never going to run at 30 without some downgrades.

They should seriously trim down the number of NPC.
So many is useless, no one will notice if there's a few hundreds missing, and at the moment they're an eyesore anymore because they're crippled with pop in, weird bugs and LOD issues.

I already wrote I am not. I give you all the smooth vs. not that smooth but sure not the playable vs. not playable.

I have yet to check it out myself, but I have now 2 people (normal people) who played it who didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked them if they had problems with the framerate.

As people explained to you, 30fps is not an arbitrary number and anything less... Just feels horrible. Also what are "normal" people?

I know it's unacceptable but i just really want to play the game after really enjoying black flag.

"There's a great game underneath the huge pile of shit. Trust me."
^This

I just want to play the game.

Buy a used copy.

Buy a used copy.

Yeah there's no way i'd pay full price. I'll look for a reduced or preowned copy. Probably thousands of them floating around in the shops.

Just saw this. Good.

Agreed, but I don't think Unity will sell at the pace of it's predecessors. The damage to this game's rep has been done. Even if some of the die-hards continue to buy this, they lost a ton of casuals....and a lot of even their die-hards fans, behind this. Ubisoft would be the dumbest company ever, to think they can pull this same kind of crap with their next games, next year.

Ofcourse 25 fps is not 'unplayable', but it's clearly less smooth than 30 fps and it hurts the gameplay.
I percieve a bigger difference between 25 fps and 30 fps than between 30 fps and 60 fps.

I was planning on getting up-to-date with the AC franchise and finally buy ACIII&IV but unless they fix this, I'm not investing a single euro in this franchise.

Its sad because underneath all the shit theres a decent game, but this game got rushed so badly. Like, Sonic 2006 bad levels of rush.
Not only the framerate problems, glitches, the huge loading times... hell even a lot of the best gear is blocked by an online mode that isnt in the game yet, meaning that you cant customize your assassin with the best gear no matter what.
Such an horrible management from Ubisoft

The framerate is mostly due to all the different micro-transactions that compute data in realtime, in this game. We have some chests that only open via the broken companion app. We have some chests that only open via Initiates website. We have some chests that only open via Uplay. we have some skills and upgrades that can be purchased via Helix pts. All of this is overtaxing the servers!!! All the mindless NPCs don't help. They're never gonna have this game running at 30fps.

It baffles me how there are people trying to spin this into a "next gen consoles are too weak!!!" issue. It just sounds like PC master race nonsense considering Ubi's games are not really optimised for any platform. I remember back when AC2 came out and I struggled to hit 30 on it on my actually good back then PC. Then with AC4 there was the whole yes you can run this at 30, but good luck getting it to 60 without insane hardware.

I guess you missed the DF article on Watch_Dogs for Wii U that came out recently.
