Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Halo 5: Guardians

I agree, was not saying otherwise, but I hate the strawman arguments like that, many games do both, people act like if ti is not 60 FPS it is not playable, major hyperbole. Destiny is a joy to play and smooth as butter, it's 30 FPS, and I prefer it stay that way and keep it's IQ.
If you mean smooth as chunky peanut butter I agree.

HUH? You cannot be serious with this...Destiny is great to play and smooth 100% of the time. There is nothing that's not smooth about it's gameplay. You don't need to tear down a game because you have an affinity for another.

You guys should watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MrClWBkKEI&feature=youtu.be&t=262 to see how crazy the campaign can get and how it keep the smooth framerate.

I love destiny , but our definition of smooth is different. No worries.

The interesting thing about Destiny is that it has pretty much the same input response time as Halo 4 MCC (86ms vs 83ms), despite being 30fps whilst the latter is 60fps. So there isn't actually a gameplay deficit with it being 30fps per se, only the aesthetic element of a less smooth looking experience.

I think people just need to accept that this gen comes with trade-offs, much like every other gen. The sooner the better, because devs can't cater to eachs individual preference. Graphics (to me) are something that you look at like once or twice and I don't play games, because of teir graphics. I play them, because the gameplay looks like fun and maybe they even come with a good story.

Halo 4 pretty much proved that for me, because I wasn't impressed with the gameplay and neither was I impressed with the story, which was okay at best. 343i trying to squeeze everything out of the Xbox 360 and sacrificing it for the graphics wasn't a very good choice, in my eyes. But luckily Halo 5 looks way more fun in terms of actual gameplay and it being 60FPS helps a lot. I'm totally okay with 343i's choice to go with dynamic resolution and 60FPS. Now let's hope they knock it out of the park with the gameplay and the story.

This tech discussion is always fun, because there's really no ending to it. Some people will never be satisfied, so I'm eager to see what the next gen will look like and how people will react to it.

Whats the point of making a post like this? Even though its a cross gen game the engine can have a ton of on screen objects and effects at any given time and the frame rate does not fluctuate. The game is completely smooth.

Thank you i could not have said that better. If you want 4k 144 fps go to pc, you know what the console can output so stop acting surprised when you don't get your perfect visual masterpiece.

I'm in the camp that's for smooth expansive, and feature heavy gameplay. Graphic will always be 2nd class to me (as long as they are reasonable.)

In many ways, this feels like a visual evolution of Halo 4 at 60fps.

Incredibly disappointing. 343 couldn't have made a visual evolution of Black ops 2? They couldn't even shoot for a visual evolution of Bloodborn?

There's a little setting on the YouTube video. You know, so you can watch it in something other than 240p. Maybe you can see it better if you change that.
Isn't he being sarcastic?

Anyway, after rewatching Arena gameplay the difference between Warzone is really noticeable, especially in the lighting on Apex 7. That map isn't quite done yet :P

Do grendas make a bigger explosion than a rocket launcher? That really stood out as super strange looking. Like 10 particles and a poof is a rocket explosion really?

This game.... Bad commercials, bad taste of MCC and nothing that blows my skirt up in that video. Hype levels falling thru the floor.

The thing is that this gen people want several things to be checked: resolution and/or framerate. Last gen resolution and framerate were mostly all over the place in many games and while some didn't care that much, it made also a difference, last gen. Trade-offs are always made and the hardware is what it is.

So much sarcasm, passive aggressiveness and salt in this thread it's great.

Personally i think the game looks great and that smooth 60FPS is worth it compared to any theoretical aesthetics people are imagining.

I must be the odd man out but I'd rather 1080p/30fps for my single player. 60fps doesn't do shit to me. I am not excited about a compressed, muddy, and blurry IQ. Plenty of games look and run fine in 30fps. 60fps for multiplayer is a different story though, but my campaign? Come on.

Your previous posts, literally on the first page.

Aw come on, no fun allowed? Just pointing out the mental gymnastics the xbox fanboys will jump thru to prove their console isn't bad/etc/etc. Much like this thread.
whatever other insane-o shit the xbox fanboys have cooked up.

Agreed. BTW, do you notice a difference between Warzone and Arena?

SO excited for Halo 5. While the graphics aren't the absolute best, I really like the art style and 60FPS is amazing with all the stuff going on.

Do you mean in terms of IQ? It's hard to miss that the IQ suffers more in Warzone, but it doesn't bother me since Warzone doesn't look like something I would play for too long. I'm more the 4vs4 guy and only played BTB modes on occasion.

The first page of my post history, in a shit show of a thread about the Occulus and MS partnership. To put it into context. Nice try though.
Two separate threads (edit: not just the quotes). How convenient of you to post a nitpick, claim hype levels falling through the floor and yet in the previous thread deride "Xbox fanboys". Your concern trolling is incredibly obvious in your other posts too.

Yeah, I was looking at the lighting on the Assault rifle specifically.

The grenade explosions caused explosive Barrels to blow in a chain reaction... At about the same time, a fuel rod shot exploded...

That's why it appears to you that the grenade explosion was bigger than the rocket...

If non of these vids do anything for you, you just must not like Halo

Remove that yellow filter and it maybe could come close.

Wouldn't a better comparison be with the Assault Rifle, anyway?

hahaha Look at my gamertag then if your concerned that I'm not a Halo fan. Oh that would show that I've played them all, including the shit show MCC. But that wouldn't fit into your persecution complex would it.
I know you played MCC based off of your post history.

See, if your criticism was actually constructive, I wouldn't care. But you came here to nitpick and be hyperbolic. It's not about "persecution", but these Halo 5 threads get really annoying; having to swim through the low quality driveby replies which are somewhat less prevalent in the other threads on gaming side (or at least the ones I've read).

1152x810 ~ 720p
1344x1080 ~ 900p

If the MP hangs around the latter, good on 343. Game was never a looker so not shocked at the 60fps consistency.

After MCC, I was convinced I was done with the Halo Universe. Everything they've shown for Halo 5 has made me do a 180 and I'm pretty damned excited.

I wish console games had quality options, shadows seem to be an issue, it'd be great to turn em off so the Resolution could be higher, or the AA could be better. Locked 60 as a priority is definitely the right decision, it's about time, but if there is muddy image quality, then that as well can be a detriment to gameplay.

I'm sure Arena and Breakout are clean and simple enough to have great image quality and locked 60 FPS, so the competitive scene will be fine. I could see Warzone and Campaign having problems with locked 60 and clean image quality, but that is to be expected, and the people invested in those parts of the game will likely be less discerning.

Good job 343.
