Digital Foundry vs. Dead Rising 3

This is a great post, if we were discussing an article titled GamePro vs. Dead Rising 3.

No need to be a dick about it. I simply have a less demanding technical threshold in terms of what I deem acceptable, and you're free to have one that's more stringent. That's the beauty of opinions. If I'm having fun with a game despite its technical flaws, then that's all that matters. I might think to myself, "this game would probably better if it were more technically sound," and while that may be true, it doesn't change the fact that I'm having fun. That's ultimately what I want from a game anyways.

Xbox One is more capable than the Xbox 360. Compare DR3 to DR1 and I see more zombies on screen, more detailed zombies, bigger environments, more detailed graphics, no loading time, etc.

I've said it before, but Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 runs at 1080p and 60fps. Does that mean that Xbox 360 is as powerful as a PS4?

I'd rather they reduce the zombie count and get the game up to at least a stable 30FPS, I put up with "technical issues' last gen because it was understandable. With the X1 though? Not at all acceptable. If it's capcom being incompetent, then MS should send them some help or something, after all, isn't MS funding this?

How does a game look like this, display at 720p and still have framerate drops under 30fps in 2013?

It's sad.

This game has far more on screen than Dead Rising 1.

This is why focusing on resolution and framerate is so dumb.

They are doing more, yes. But they are not running it on the same hardware. If this was a 360 game and it was running this way then one could easily overlook framerate and resolution because it's on really old hardware. But it's on new hardware. Hardware that costs 500 dollars. A locked 30 fps at 720p is not expecting too much of a next gen game

I do not care if this is a launch title, for the $500 price tag, in 2013, we should not even be discussing games that are 720p not hitting a constant, fluid 30 FPS. Anyone trying to say otherwise is clearly blinded by their allegiance to certain companies.

It is like someone saying watching a cam version of a movie is okay. I mean afterall, you are still getting the story of the movie right? Who cares it the audio may be out of sync and the video is atrocious. You still get the experience. Sorry, I am not buying the excuses.

I also do not care if it is doing more than the previous games on current gen.

What I do care about is what I expect as a consumer. One for that matter whose focus is purely from a gaming standpoint.

"But it is a launch game, what do you expect?"

I expect better than this. That is for sure.
I also am not sure why our expectations as consumers should be lowered at all just because something is "new" from a technology standpoint. I just do not get at all why so many people are willing to give things a pass just because they are "new" when it comes to technology and, especially it seems, gaming.

As much as I love this series, I do believe I have to cancel my preorder on premise alone.
I just do not feel right saying this is all okay from a consumer perspective when it is not.

...yeah sure..whatever

this is pure fanboyism

look at other game graphics resolutions and fps ..and you will delete your post

Hahaha

K I looked at other XB1 games...seeing a lot of 720p....but resolution doesn't ma-HEY FORZA RUNS AT 1080p! Way to go, XB1. You trooper, you.

This was the Xbox One game I was the most excited for. Well, wake me if they ever release a patch that fixes the performance issues or a Dead Rising 3: Off the Record that is properly optimized for the Xbox One.

Pretty horrible analogy considering that at no time in history were camera recorded movies with out of sync audio an accepted norm for movie watching. A better analogy might be watching a VHS or DVD today, despite the fact that Blurays are readily available.

NBA 2K14 dude. I think both NBA 2K14 and Ryse will likely suffer frame rate issues too, but gameplay AND graphics wise 2K14 looks the most impressive out of the bunch. It's also 1080p and targeting 60fps as well (hopefully).

Lol no it doesn't. The facial animation is absolutely horrible in NBA 2K14, total immersion killer. Also Ryse is 30fps locked, no framerate issues there.

Dat sharpening effect. Is this going to be a thing now with X1? I think they overdid it as you can see in BF4 and now this. I mean it seems to be working as some people somehow liked it with BF4 but this? LOL.

I am not happy about this seemingly being something that's part of the hardware scaler. Even if it's just an option for the devs, it doesn't appear to be something we schmucks on the receiving end can turn off.

What makes you think that the next-gen of hardware will be free of technical issues? There will always be technical issues because developers are always trying to raise the bar. Sure if we had games that looked like and played like Xbox 360 games we would be in the clear but that's not going to happen (thankfully).

Anyone else thinks that this compares to L4D2 in terms of graphics? My 4 year old computer could run that easily at full res 60+ fps (then again it was the source engine).

No it isn't. In the latest bout of gameplay videos for Ryse, there's several frame rate drops. One is actually quite severe. But feel free to quote me after DF do their tech breakdown for the game ;)

And I disagree, I think the animations and facial expressions in NBA 2K14 are great, especially given the type of game it is. It's not a cinematic action game with a few main characters. It's a sports game with countless players.

terrible indeed..

Holy shit.

If sitting farther back from the TV fixes the 720p problem, what do I do about 20 fps? Blink more?

I laughed...

The problem I have is it looks very... brownish/grey... is it unreal 3?..(serious question) as a fan of the first 2 games... to me this looks dissapointing.. can't believe the framerate is so poor..

Microsoft made it clear that the Launch lineup games is what seperates it from it´s competitors... imagine what would happen if the delayed a game..?

I would assume the same thing that happened to driveclub... 2 days of LOLOLOLOL and then people going "oh wait, it might be a good game now."

look at the wonders the delay is doing to driveclub ... sometimes developers just need more time.

Why does this even matter to most people commenting on this thread. Aren't you already getting a PS4???

Doesn't matter. It's an article for anyone to argue about, regardless of actual interest or intent to buy/play the game under scrutiny. Console war stuff and it's fair game. Me, I've already paid for DR3 and a X1 (along with a PS4). I still want it because the thing that hypes me on it is the game itself. This information is solidly disappointing, but not catastrophic like some are exaggerating in here.

wow
thats fucking gross

god i will never understand how anyone likes artificial sharpening
shit drives me nuts on dvds and blurays
and its even worse here because it makes aliasing like saw blades

Wasn't this aupposed to be a X360 game? Capcom didn't really care for optimization, me thinks

Game looks fun, but technically mediocre and definitely not nextgen.

I am a massive Dead Rising fan. I have said more than once that I would be picking up this game, and the system, when there were a few more exclusives I wanted to play. This just fell off the list of 'reasons to buy and Xbox One' for me.

I'm not happy about it, obviously.

I've previously defended this title. Dead Rising was a key reason I got the Xbox 360 at launch (Kameo and Condemned were the two other key reasons). I would have traded any PS4 exclusive for this one.

Heck, I probably still would. But only if it ran better. I can't enjoy games with these kind of frame rates. Not because I haven't given them a chance. Not because I'm a picky asshole. 30 fps is completely fine with me, especially in these kinds of games, but my tolerance for anything that spends a good amount of time below 25 fps is zero.

I wish it wasn't.

What the fuck. It even looks like it's an indoors scene, how could they possibly not have delayed the game if it was running that horribly?

Something to do with that smoke assuredly. Rednering volumetric fog can be quite CPU intensive, something that both the PS4 and XO are quite weak in.

I don't think it's catastrophic, but it does confirm that I won't be able to enjoy it. If it's a good game, I'll be left out in the cold again like I was with Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and GTA4 on consoles... etc. etc.

That it runs worse than the original, and that people are making excuses for that... it's utterly laughable. CAPCOM Vancouver have really shown their technical ineptitude here. It might still be a great game, but there's no debating that technically there is no excuse for this performance at this resolution.

Not one valid excuse.

Quite the generalization to make. Couldn't someone who's getting an Xbox One still be disappointed? I'm getting one next year and Dead Rising 3 is one of the titles at launch I'm most interested in playing, when I get mine.

Also. For all the posts were people are saying it should be about the fun, not the performance, I never knew the two were mutually exclusive. Also, since we're not in a position to actually play the games yet, all we're left to do is take in this information. Some people are just interested in technology or are curious just how powerful their new half a thousand dollar machine is. Get over it.

This just makes me want to know what the hell is going on with the tools on the Xbox One. The console is weaker than PS4 but it should be able to handle an ugly game like this at 720p with a good framerate. This should have been delayed, it's not the kind of thing you want representing a console at launch.
