Digital Foundry vs. Dead Rising 3

Hardware limitations aside since driver support must surely get better with time, who is more to blame for the game being released in this state? Is it Capcom or Microsoft?

I'm not purchasing an Xbone but I think its a shame for those that are who are fans of this series. I hope the game still holds up to be fun to play and isn't too hampered by its flaws.

It would be nice to see more games trade off for better performance and IQ during launch. We could appreciate last-gen assets and ambitions that were marred by blurriness, jaggies, tearing, and sluggishness. Besides remakes we don't really have time to go back and see what games should've looked and ran like.

Wallcar.

It's also unfortunate that the game runs at far from the promised locked 30fps - rather a chugging 20fps during the zombie action while out in the big city.

WTF? Who built this console? The man behind the Atari Jaguar? ;-)

As a game, I'm sure it will still be fun based on the footage we've seen.

As an exclusive title for a brand new console, it's already a disappointment.

Direct frame buffer captures...

It's got 8Gig or ram for fuck sake. There is zero excuse for crap like this. I'm getting less impressed by Xbox One every day. Not even managing 30fps at 720p. What a crock.

Wow, this is disappointing. No wonder MS put embargoes on everything.

It just makes me dumbfounded how MS got so much right with the Xbox 360 and royally screws up the Xbox One.

Some craptastic management.

The game "The Last of Us" from Naughty Dog won many Game of the Year and probably also GOO awards. It's praised from all reviewers and a lot of fans. On average it runs with about 26FPS.

Same for GTA V.

There is no baseline.

That doesn't make any sense, both those games are running on 7-8 year old hardware dude. Are you saying you want to pay $500 for last gen games? Why not just stick with the x360 and PS3 in that case? Seriously guys, stop being so dense.

It's honestly fine if you want an X1, there's nothing wrong with that, but don't try and sell it to most reasonable people on here. It's no more powerful and it never will be, there's no point in comparing the two anymore at this point. It's time to stop making excuses for MS and admit that they really did mess up on the X1.

Point is the huge 'variability' in the amount of stuff that can be going on at once in DR.
Either you 'underuse' your hardware a lot of the time, or you risk a few slowdowns.

The point is striking a balance, and from what i've seen, things are not bad at all in DR3.

Dynamic resolution wouldn't have been a bad idea

So sub 720p? :P

This would have been much better had the target frame rate been 60fps, but who knows what is holding the frame rate back. They could be struggling to optimize the load on all the CPU cores.

This is a somewhat silly post.

Obviously DR2 on a current gen console will look worse than The Last of Us on a current gen console. The point I was making is that it's not far fetched for people to expect DR3 on a next gen console to look better than the Last of Us on a current gen console. Despite one being sandbox and one being linear, one is also on considerably more powerful hardware.

Add to that, being a sandbox game doesn't automatically mean 3x more resources are used or that it looks 3x worse because of it (see GTA V, Read Dead Redemption etc). And having more characters on screen doesn't necessarily mean the resource intensity has to be exponentially higher (depends on the level of detail and geometry, AI etc of those characters). Tonnes of enemies but with barely any AI has been done countless times.

See Heavenly Sword, Kameo, there's even one PS2 game where the name escapes me.

PS2 ? tons of ennemies on screens ?

Ikusagami !

10000 on-screens ennemies , a technical feat at the time.
i liked this game
But yeah their ai was very simple.

The obvious answer is ==========. To use some comparisons to enlighten as to why, consider the following:

How many 720p games are on the PS4? How many games have we heard of having trouble hitting 30fps on the PS4 whilst be 720p?

That should answer your question as to who is responsible.

I think they're lying tbh.

You know one of the worst things to do in a losing argument is to all of a sudden say the other person is lying.

I haven't lost any arguement in this thread. My original comments were based around people buying this series for the gameplay. I backed that up with the sales data I provided. The issues that DR 3 has won't prevent the fanbase from buying this game, just watch.

As CBOAT said, if people are still sticking with the Bone at this point then there's really no changing their minds.

Let's be frank, DR3 could've been 600p upscaled to 720p and they still wouldn't care. Brand loyalty will always be a thing with consumers.

the hilarious part about these woes with the first run of games, most of them are essentially tech demos presented as a game(Knack is the most blatant of the bunch), just like the original Dead Rising on 360 was nothing but "oh wow look at all the moving AI on screen, next-gen!" the same is being done here.

except they're not actually demoing it in a good way.

thats like if EPIC put out a trailer for their new UDK filled with choppy frame rate issues and low res textures and claiming to have development features and abilities that cant actually be obtained

This game could have been a perfect example on how using the "cloud" would make the game better with all the zombie ai being done on the cloud. Instead we get a mess of a game that can't even run at 720p at a decent fps, which for a next gen only title is poor.

Makes me think all this cloud talk is in the same mould as the BS that Sony spouted out about the CELL.

I wasn't planning on purchasing an X Bax, but if I did this was the launch title that looked to be the most fun to me. Kind of deflating to see that it runs on par(or worse) to current gen.

The game does indeed look fun, but with an abysmal framerate in key areas, I can imagine that fun would turn into frustration.

God damn it, X Bex, you had one job.

I get what you're saying, but see, I like DR and I accepted the bad stability in DR1 and 2 because they were running on old hardware. This, however? No, running at 720p, at less than 30FPS, on a brand new console (that is, coincidentally, the most expensive of the two)? As much as may have enjoyed the first two, there's zero chance I'm supporting this one, or the X1 for that matter. Not until DR3 hits the bargain bin and the X1 is at least $150 cheaper. I refuse to pay more for an inferior product.

Is there a reason you can't write "box" properly?

Gtfo. The original Dead Rising is a great game. This is not a next gen tech showpiece.

As I think it was Y2Kev said, it is the journos and the mouthpieces that are to blame here, and you can honestly not blame people for being upset and really not blame the defensive ones.
The game will be fun either way, Dead Rising is Dead Rising.
They should not have tried to fluff people when this stuff will inevitably get out, it only causes issues and serves no purpose.
And if they hide it by keeping people in certain optimized levels in preview situations, again they are only hurting players.

Once again, Dead Rising 1 ran better then Dead Rising 2 (and runs better than Dead Rising 3). It also had nice anti aliasing. It also didn't have textures as bad as some of these are.

How is that acceptable to anyone? A launch game running worse and with inferior image quality than the launch window last gen game in the same series.

I'm blaming CAPCOM Vancouver myself, but seriously... how is that okay? I say that as a huge fan of the series, who was disappointed with the steps back technically that the second game took.

Stop saying Dead Rising fans don't care. I obviously care.

in fact it isnt. This should run 720p/30 even on xb1's weaker hardware.
This does prove once again that they're not a talented developer.

Those wall textures were pretty bad, but this game is going to be fun as hell either way. As already mentioned in this thread, plenty of other games have had shit frame rate and they're pretty popular, like the Last of Us and GTA 5. But all of the sudden, because we're on next gen, our expectations are inflated, and its no longer ok?

Old habit. My friends and I call it everything but that, and I'm not even sure why anymore.

A friend of mine works at the local VA Hospital, and for some reason a store inside the hospital is getting both new consoles(and sold tax free)... I already have a PS4 preordered and paid off, but I'm almost tempted to get him to have a XBO held for me.

Sadly, this would have been the launch game I bought for it.

OK, this is pretty disappointing to see. The framerate still dips well under 30 fps and the image quality is abysmal. Despite the improvements over previous games it really does look and run like a 360 game on the surface. Very disappointing.

Compared to those direct feed Infamous shots that were floating around today it really is like night and day.

I wonder who exactly it was at Edge that wrote this piece of copy:

Dead Rising 3 now looks like a smarter bet for open-world mayhem than Second Son.

If you played the previous games that also had technical issues, and it seems you still liked the gameplay, then it's the same case with DR 3. They should have done better, but it's Capcom, at this point, you need to keep your expectations in check.
