Dissidia Final Fantasy ARCADE ANNOUNCED! [Update: Trailer + Info]

People forget there's a middle ground, yes. But! Perfo thought Lightning Returns was an AAA game (without understanding what AAA actually means). He thinks everything that comes from Square Enix with the FF brand attached is a 'high budget' game. Probably better not to encourage him.

Thank you very much for mentioning me! But that said, I don't know exactly what you think of an AAA game, but I'm sure that by reading the credits of LR: FFXIII, looking at the big voice cast involved in both versions, the time of development, the marketing spent on it and events in which it was present... I can safely say LR: FFXIII is indeed a big title. Not as big as FF15 and FF13, mind that and all we know already by looking at graphics, but talking of it as a mid/low-budget title for S-E and this industry in general seems a bit stretched. Middle-budget game is probably something more close to Drakengard 3.

But if you just wanted to say in your own way that LR sucks and I'm a fanboy please feel free to continue.

EDIT:
Opsie, forgot about Aeris/Aerith and Zack, probly these two will come too. And maybe maybe Kain from FFIV, but i am not sure if Laguna have great chances...

So based on fan rosters I've seen so far people are expecting Laguna and Kain to be cut.

Kind of unexpected for those two. I was expecting people to think Prishe being cut if anyone.

Kinda curious to see if they go for the same 'original only' versions of characters, or if there's a chance we can see Lightning Returns Lightning, X-2 Yuna, etc. Would be interesting to see them moveset wise, at the very least.

The main thing that has me excited are the new shielding mechanics. The parries from before were cool, but I somewhat disliked how they stopped all momentum for both players briefly. Wonder if it'll work like in Smash, where your barrier goes down over time, and eventually breaks?

Do you want to buy a new 30,000 dollar always online console which can only play this game, and then pay Square Enix 10 cents every time you or any of your friends play a match on such a console? :)

More like $1.00 for every time you want to play a match since it's usually 100 yen per game over there. It always blow my mind when people have like over 10,000+ games in arcades, just think of all that money!

Fuck that noise, keep the console version up to date with DLC!

PS4 version confirmed? Yessss. Hopefully it comes out at least by the end of 2016. It would be right to assume this will come out after FFXV, at least for console, right?

you should expect this 2017, My personal opinion is that FFXV is coming out fall 2016

I'm talking about the publisher cut, since that would be what is relevant to Square Enix when making the decision to put certain things on certain platforms.

Hopefully we get badass Lightning from LR: FFXIII! If not, regular Lightning will work but we already had her in Duodecim. Not interested in the game without Lightning, the best character to come out of the series since Balthier.

Did you even watch the trailer? You see XIII Lightning in the battle. Hope for a costume of LR Lightning.

If we're playing this game, roster desires, I say I'd love to have Lightning LR, Noel, Caius, Ace, Machina, Noctis, Gaius at least all-in!

damn it all, i was watching this morning and this is like the best FF in a long time to me. too bad is only arcades

I very much doubt we will not see this on PS4/Xone sometime in the future. Square-Enix is all about making cash, and this is the same strategy that Tekken uses. Expect it to come.

I think they're just forgetting about Laguna and Kain. When you see a list in an FF-related thread, generally expect that not too much critical thinking was involved.

It''ll be ready for evo 2017

i can dream, right ?

Since by saying "since Balthier" you're only comparing her to other FFXIII franchise characters and the FF Type-0 cast, then sure, I'll allow it, I guess.

I'm not sure they'd include them as separate characters like Theatrhythm, given the amount of ground they have to cover. I'd expect them to just be costumes, in the vein of 012's After Years Golbez and X-2 Yuna.

The game has only just been announced and we've only seen one newcomer so far from XIV. Don't write Tactics characters off just yet.

There is still probably a lot more we haven't seen, but Tactics/VS characters are incredibly unlikely when there are so many more recent spinoffs to represent. Perhaps we'll see a Tactics costume for one of the FF12 characters in the 5th revision of the game, but an actual representative is far too much to hope for.

They'll want to milk the arcade for at least half a year imo, and the game doesn't look like it's hitting the arcades anytime soon either. If it's anything like how Bandai Namco handles the Gundam VS games, the home version will also be behind the arcade version in terms of roaster.
Sounds closer to the ArcSys model. Actually selling this thing in the west would probably keep the situation less dire than EXVS being a revision behind forever.

Somehow, if this game went to consoles and the roster got updates via DLC, that would concern me a bit. Because we would get more stuff like Zack, which is not an original character gameplay-wise, but it is the kind of DLC that would sell...

Thankfully there are not that many clone characters in FF though...

Since by saying "since Balthier" you're only comparing her to other FFXIII franchise characters and the FF Type-0 cast, then sure, I'll allow it, I guess.

Celestia > Lightning.

Eh, what the hell. I'll do some character predictions

FFI: Warrior of Light, Red Mage, Garland
FFII: Firion, Guy/Maria/Leon, Mateus
FFIII: Onion Knight, Cid/Sara/Aria/Desch/Xande, Cloud of Darkness
FFIV: Cecil, Kain, Zemus/One of the Four Fiends maybe?, Golbez
FFV: Bartz, Faris/Lenna, Gilgamesh, Exdeath
FFVI: Terra, Celes/Locke/Edgar, Kefka
FFVII: Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth, Reno & Rude/Elena
FFVIII: Squall, Laguna, Ultimecia, Seifer/Edea
FFIX: Zidane, Kuja, Vivi/Garnet/Freya/Beatrix
FFX: Tidus, Yuna, Jecht, Seymour (Can't think of anyone else who'd work really well tbh)
FFXI: Shantotto, Prishe, Shadow Lord/Eald'narche/Kam'laut/Selh'teus/Promathia (There's a lot of villains they could go with, but I doubt they'll stretch beyond the Chains of Promathia storyline unless they drop Shantotto or Prishe for Lilisette/Aphmau)
FFXII: Vaan, Ashe/Basch/Balthier, Gabranth
FFXIII: Lightning, Sazh/Fang/Vanille/Snow/Cid Raines/Barthandelus
FFXIV: ???? (Haven't played, so I can't say)
FFXV: Noctis, Stella (? She's still a thing, right?)

If they delve into sequels...

FFIV The After Years: Ceodore
FFVII Crisis Core/Advent Children: Zack/Angeal/Genesis/Yazoo
FFX-2: This one's interesting, as they could go for another version of Yuna. Personally? I think they'd just choose Rikku or Paine for this. No villains, since the main baddie is basically just Evil Tidus.
FFXIII-2: Noel, Caius (I don't see them adding one without the other, honestly.)
FFXIII LR: Alt. Lightning/Lumina/Bhunivelze

Spin-offs?

FFCC: Generic Clavat/Layle, Black Knight/Amidatelion
FFT: Ramza/Marche/Luso, Delita/Ultima/Mewt/Doned/Queen Remedi/Illua
FFMQ: Benjamin

I also get the feeling guest characters will be a thing in this game as well. Honestly? The ones that have the biggest shot are probably;

Aya Brea (Parasite Eve)
Chrono/Magus (Chrono Trigger)
Zero/Nier/Kaine/Emil (Drakengard/Nier. Leaning more towards Nier though, since they seem to use those characters more in their other crossover arcade games)
Neku Sakuraba/Joshua (The World Ends With You)
Tiz/Edea (Bravely Default)

...Shut up, let me have my wishful thinking.:c

Regarding characters, I had an idea ages ago that they could bring in Cid from FFIII, but his moves would be an amalgam of all the series' Cids, so for example he'd have Cid Highwind's spear, but Cid from FFXII's giant magicite gun as well. Similarly I thought there could be a straight-up chocobo fighter - he'd generally be Boko from FFV, but with skins of other chocobo art styles.

Other than those I always wanted to see Vivi and the Black Waltz battling Dissidia-style.

Holy crap, this needs a console release! Especially since we'll probably never get one of these arcade in Canada. :O

Cloud never actually possessed Zack's body like Ultimecia did for Edea, so I don't think that's likely - incorporating him as a clone character could work, however. They could probably give Ultimecia a Rinoa costume using the same rationale; but the proportions could look a little off...

It wasn't much because of possession, it was more because both were sorceresses and as the game itself never really elaborated on Edea's movesets except for one limit break, giving her a separate identity would have been too similar to Ultimecia. Same goes for Zack. In the lead up to the release of duodecim, all the interviews with the devs said that the reason for selecting Laguna, Yuna, Kain, Light, Prishe, Vaan was to build up on uniqueness. In fact I seem to remember that Seifer was not considered for the same reasons: They don't want near similar characters.

They could maybe make him differ from Cloud based on Crisis Core gameplay elements.

I think you could easily add Zack as a semi-clone. Like he can be the Ken to Cloud's Ryu. They have similarities but aren't exactly the same.

For the reasons mentioned above, I don't think the devs want that, but personally I also want Zack. :P

AAA is the term the industry uses to describe games that have stratospheric budgets (Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto, etc.). It is not a term of my own creation. If looking at the size of a voice cast determined how big of a title a game is, then every Dynasty Warriors would easily surpass LR as a 'bigger' game—but we know that is not true. If looking at the size of the credits determined how expensive a game is, then FF14: ARR is surely king, since the credits run for some 20 odd minutes and include the names of all the players of FF14 1.0—but even with the MMO budget 1.0 had and the giant bandaid money they had to spend to make 2.0, it's unlikely FF14 is the most expensive game in history.

If LR isn't comparable budget wise to FF15/14/13, then it isn't one of SE's high budget games. It probably did not have even a comparable budget to SE's big western games (Tomb Raider (which was actually more expensive than 13), Hitman). Naturally that means to SE, LR is not a high budget game—it's a midtier. SE's arcade games are probably in the same midtier. And games like Drakengard 3 are further below that, meaning Drakengard isn't a midtier but actually a low tier.

$50 million plus is the kind of money SE dumps on mainline FF titles. I'd be surprised if SE spent more than $20 million on Lightning Returns. Relative to smaller developers and publishers, $20 million is probably a lot of money. Relative to SE, it's not a high budget.

In short, Dissidia is likely not high budget. Doesn't mean it can't be a quality game. Guilty Gear Xrd looks amazing, but it's not like Arc System Works had to flush out $50 million to get it made. Feel free to continue being a fanboy.

Friendly reminder that Zack's already been a fighting game clone.

duodecim dlc plan was just the start

Duodecim's costume DLC was one of the few DLCs of that ilk that I didn't have a problem shelling out for because:

a) It was priced reasonably
b) It didn't come at the expense of unlockable in-game alternate costumes (A majority of which were massive improvements from the alts in the first game)

My only issue was that some costumes were never made available outside of buying specific games, or in some cases unavailable in some regions entirely. (Four years later and I'm still bitter that Squall's Kingdom Hearts costume was never made available in the US)

Any proof this is FFXIV's engine? I honestly don't see it.

No concrete proof whatsoever. But its a feeling i've got. It just looks tons like FFARR's graphics engine, and it would make sense since that engine already supports many characters and large scale attacks on screen at a time and scales well with low end hardware hence 3vs3 and eventual console port as well as keeping costs down.

I don't see where they would find the budget to make a brand new engine from scratch for this title. And since Luminous is not available, and UE4 they would probably advertise at the unveiling, it seems reasonable to take that as using FF14's engine.

I'm kinda sad that this is still going to be strictly Final Fantasy. It would be neat to see characters like Fei or Mint or Musashi.

Graphics-wise i have the same impression as SAO: Lost Song, while there's a huge upgrade i prefer the more colorful and cartoony graphics' style of the predecessors.

If it was UE4, you'd think Epic would want to be apart of the unveiling like they have been for virtually every game reveal so far

I think the only new character I'd really like to see in is Vincent and perhaps Genesis. I also think that there is room in this series for KH characters, they would fit so well.

There's still a few to fall back on if they want to pad the roster.

The most unique additions since Decapre and Fukua, and possibly even more reviled.
I was talking about popular characters, but sure =X

Also, Seven's playstyle would be completely different from Lightning's, she uses a whip.

Let's keep Gackt out of this game...

Wasn't Gackt the basis of a few characters like Squall? He's technically already been in it lol.
I meant that literally. Back in the PSP days my friends would argue that characters like Sora didn't belong in Dissidia, which I'm sure some folks would agree with. I just think they'd work well within the mechanics of the Dissidia games.
