Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

Bought myself a Wii today and downloaded DKC2 and tried to play it with the Gamecube controller. Completely torturous, I need me a classic controller pro ASAP.

Yeah I was tried to play DKC1 with the Cube control. Absolutely awful. It's easier if you hold it like playing an arcade game with your hand on top of the controller but it's still pretty bad. I've got a classic controller but the D-Pad keep sticking on the left side and i've barely even used it.

Google retroport and use a real SNES controller.

I've been watching more demo clips of this game and I gotta say, I'm really impressed with Retro's efforts. Just watching this clip alone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3Dd6fp3nlc&feature=related has given me a very good impression on what Retro's trying to achieve here.

The use of DK's mechanics are eloquently displayed by how well the enemies are designed in this game, and they are very thoroughly conceived. The yellow crabs are almost like a homage to Mario's green koopa's and the red crabs with the red koopas. Where they're placed and what must be done to overcome them (yellow just one jump, red one jump and a roll) is quite meticulously crafted. Interesting stuff.

The other fascinating thing about this game thus far is the use of multiple 2D planes and the puzzle elements attached there in. The background's and foreground's aren't just visual feasts it seems, the player will have to be be alert and be critical in thought when progressing further into the level. I can see further on that it won't be a move-from-a-to-B-in-a-linear-fashion type game. I can't wait to see more.

Kotaku has a new DKCR interview. A few quotes...
Water levels?

Tanabe: "There are no underwater stages this time around."

Wait. That last one was an answer with information. Walker elaborated, saying that experiments with DKC-style underwater levels: "felt slow it just wasn't the kind of gameplay we were looking for."
Tanabe did shoot down the possibility of a return of DKC villain King K.Rool. "There will be no alligators in this game," he said.
"We shifted gears from making a very gritty, sci-fi edgy type of environment to such a whimsical character." Walker said. "We constantly have to revisit [questions like] 'Why would Donkey Kong do this?' or 'Why would this environment be like this?' And then we start thinking: 'We're making a game about a gorilla wearing a tie.'"
Okay, but what about DK's animal buddies, like the rhino he could ride in the first Donkey Kong Country?

Tanabe: "I know people certainly have enjoyed them in the past so we are definitely considering those elements of gameplay. But you'll have to excuse me for keeping this secret for a little while longer."

:/

The only thing I will miss about the underwater levels is the fucking awesome music. Fuck your Bramble Blast, I loooved Aquatic Ambience.

But, yeah, at least in DKC1, the underwater levels were shit worst part of the game, by far. Even worse than the hideous Kong fam.

(I really need to play more than the first game. >_>)

Though I have no idea why you object to this quote

...

oh unless the ':/' is a meaningless emoticon and you did not intend it to signify what it is usually meant to signify

It's a shame I loved the ambience (wink wink) created in underwater stages. One of the few water levels I actually enjoyed.

And seeing that video, god I hate hoovering in platformers.

Oh, I'm not objecting to that particular point at all, it's more of the general feel I got. I guess I am pretty attached to the water levels and I'm really sad to see them go. Although it's true that the music is mainly why I enjoyed the water levels :lol

edit: whoops, typos

The setting helped the music imho.

Indeed, there's no reason why peaceful music like that that is so clichéd as underwater music cannot be co-opted suitably for peaceful above-ground platforming.

And maybe that way, the music will help the setting.

Yeah it's blind nostalgia hatred, we all went through that phase already. It'll go.

Kremlings were part of what gave the original so much charm. And from the videos I've seen the enemies DO seem much more generic. If they were scrapping kremlings in favor of something better (impossible task in the first place) then that would be fine.

Seriously though, no K Rool? That shit is just offensive. Even if he was only in like one level or something, at least throw the fans a bone. He is one of my favorite boss characters across the entire medium. When they first showed this off my very first thought was "HOLY SHIT YES I WONDER WHAT THE FINAL K ROOL FIGHT WILL BE LIKE"

oh wellz, i'm not gonna try to spoil the fun for the rest of you guys. maybe you're right and this will wear off

First of all, you haven't seen 1/100th of the enemies in the new game yet and second of all, it's Retro and a new game, they have too much talent to recycle everything from the series' past.

They are doing more than their part in keeping the formula and style the same.

Im going to miss the water levels, but I can understand their reasoning.

On the K Rool thing, Tanabe says no "alligators" but aren't the kremlings from crocodile island? Theres a chance he was just hiding a surprise.

They should go the Mega Man route and end every game with a "AND K. ROOL WAS THE REAL VILLAIN ALL ALONG!" 'twist'. They already did that in DKC3.

screw you guys, I liked DKC's underwater levels, I liked Engarde, and I liked Kiddy Kong's ability to skip across water

and I thought the animation for Donkey while swimming was amazing and hilarious

Oh, I certainly agree. There's no denying that. But, I think your second statement is key.

Actually, something that might be neat is an underwater cave level that takes place in one of those stereotypical pockets of air, where everything has those blue tones, and light is reflected off of the water below and bounced back and forth off the damp walls and it feels like you're in the old swimming levels, but you're actually not and yeah. O:

They've said no "crocodiles" before, as well. Covering bases. (Probably just one of those honest mistakes - a lot of people don't really know the difference.)

In an IGN interview Bryan Walker (or Michael, they didn't specify) said there aren't crocodiles.

Shame about the underwater levels. They were never super difficult or frustrating and were a good change of pace. Some of them transitioned from underwater to on land and back again in the same level to good effect too. Oh well. Hopefully this just means the game has enough new or different elements to not require the usual underwater stage.

They were a great change of pace from the platforming.

:( Reality is breakin my heart

I'm still excited, but every since the announcement, every piece of info that comes in has been more and more dissapointing. First no David Wise, then no K. Rool, then no Kremlins in general, and now no underwater?! I have faith in retro, but I must admit I'm starting to worry a bit.

Why even say "no crocodiles" or "no alligators"? Why not just say "no kremlings"?

From what's been shown so far, there's been a distinct lack of barrel throwing...

Hmm? I've seen DK throw barrels in several videos.

I want this now!

It's just... Retro's art designers making a platformer!

Not just any platformer the #1 platformer of monkeys and apes everywhere!

Why the hell isn't it here yet?

When the game comes out, the only thing nostalgic about it will be the title. And then it'll have to prove whether it' a good game in it's own right. Retro might be able to pull it off, but I would've had NO QUALMS if they just went with the overblown nostalgia root.

I think you're all overreacting. The underwater levels are always the worst part of platformers (actually, of any game which doesn't have them as the main focus).

Granted, the levels with Engarde were tolerable and much better than, say, any Sonic water level, but still, they were weaker than any ground level. Water levels without Engarde were almost untolerable.

On another point, losing the Kremlins will have no real effect on the game. It'll just make it harder to associate it with the old trilogy. But it's not a big deal. We'll get used to the new enemies.

David Wise would be awesome to have on board again, but Yamamoto is dandy fine as well. Nothing to complaint about there.

Remember how people felt about Metroid Prime before it actually released?

I'm afraid that many people are just setting themselves up for major disappointment :(

It seems Retro is crafting their own game, not just DKC 2 HD like so many people seem to expect.

I'm puzzled that people are getting more and more disappointed because news is coming out that this isn't a straight remake of the original.

Retro is making a Donkey Kong Country game. That's enough for me right now. I absolutely loved what they did with Metroid. Hopefully they can revive the DKC series as well.
