Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

Don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread or not yet, but Reggie will be on Jimmy Fallon tonight with Donkey Kong Country Returns.

I think you're all overreacting. The underwater levels are always the worst part of platformers (actually, of any game which doesn't have them as the main focus).

Granted, the levels with Engarde were tolerable and much better than, say, any Sonic water level, but still, they were weaker than any ground level. Water levels without Engarde were almost untolerable.

Calling playing the levels without Engaurde intolerable seems like far more of an overreaction than people being disappointed that a sequel is missing a level archetype they enjoyed.

Really, you really couldn't stand it without Engaurde? Come on man, it wasn't that bad :lol

The Kremlins aren't that great. They basically look like generic mascot platformer enemies. King K. Rool is ugly, not that interesting, and really pales in comparision to Nintendo's other "giant reptile" enemy - Bowser.

I'm puzzled that people are getting more and more disappointed because news is coming out that this isn't a straight remake of the original.

Retro is making a Donkey Kong Country game. That's enough for me right now. I absolutely loved what they did with Metroid. Hopefully they can revive the DKC series as well.
People thought this was a remake? They've made it pretty clear since it was shown that it's a sequel or return of the series heavily influenced by the original game, but it's not a remake. I think it looks great and will be a lot of fun. Retro has put a lot of subtle details into the game.

of course they are.
More precisely they're chelonians but they're still reptiles.
I'm sad about the Kremlings and I hope they return in the next installment!
Cannot care less about underwater levels:aside from Enguarde and the music, they were my less favorites levels of the original games.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell an aquatic reptile from an amphibian.

Fuckin reptiles should just stick to the surface where they belong. I have enough snakes to worry about on land and in the sky.

wow this game just keeps getting crappier...the first three were good.

However if anyone remembers Kremlings weren't in the third game fo the trilogy...they had more enviormental enemys.

I'm surprised about the love that the Kremlins are getting. The 3 DKC games consumed quite a bit of my childhood but the Kremlins leave no real impression on me, I probably wouldn't have noticed they were gone if you guys hadn't said anything.

I don't care about underwater levels per se. But I consider Diddy's Kong Quest the most varied 2D platformer of all time due to its ingenious ways to mix up the gameplay mechanics. Putting the characters underwater, in carts or barrels is one thing, Diddy's Kong Quest vastly expanded on this by having things like rising/falling water, water getting too hot or freezing, strong wind from the sides or from the bottom, sticky walls, hooks, hot-air balloons, spring crocodiles, different animals with their own set of controls and features. That way the developer managed to recycle each level theme which still felt totally different from each other due to the application of above gameplay variations.

I have since waited for another platform game this ingenious.

There were Kremlings in DKC3. There were also more non-Kremling enemies, but there were definitely still Kremlings.

Looks like Reggie is going to be the one demoing the game on Jimmy Fallon's show.

I was going to watch this but I don't think I'm going to now. I can't bare to watch Reggie screw up. After seeing Miyamoto and Zelda I don't ever want to go through something similar again!

"fuck you!"[/QUOTE]

Okay, if those things still existed I think I'd thank my lucky stars that I live in Kansas.

Reggie is pretty bad at playing games. I know this firsthand.

The complaining in this thread makes me sick.

Metroid Prime is one of the highest-ranked games ever. The same team is working on a new Donkey Kong.

That's all I need to know to make DKCR my most wanted game.

How hard would it have been to get a Retro Studios employee to play the game? It's not like anyone in the audience is going to piss their pants because of Reggie (I would, but most people wouldn't recognize him :lol ).

True, but it's nothing compared to the backlash Retro got when Metroid Prime was announced. I have found that games end up being better when the fans complain a lot before its release. :lol That's why I worry for the Nintendo 3DS 0_o

This logic perplexes me. Perplexes me indeed.

Donkey Kong Country was all about the 'flow' and rhythm to me, the demo levels at E3 seemed kinda slow but who knows maybe the latter stages are build with the classic DKC 'flow' in mind.

Reggie never screws up. I will be watching to make sure he takes Jimmy's name.

I'll get over it, but the notion of no K. Rool or Kremlings does hurt a bit.

Hopefully, they'll be back in a future game. I liked fighting Krunchas! :lol

It seems Retro is crafting their own game, not just DKC 2 HD like so many people seem to expect.
I don't think anyone expected that on the Wii.

Datschge said:
Kinda. I guess they could count. I personally prefer 2D platform games though.
That's fine, but my point still stands - SMG/2 is/are one/some of the most varied platformer/s in existence. The most varied I've ever played by far. (As I've mentioned before in this thread, I have yet to play DKC2/3, which is a source of much sadness.)

If you mean "flow" as in "I can rush through the levels for speed running," then the game will not have that. Interviews show that the team initially made levels that catered to speed running like that but were told it was too hard for certain players.

So the game is slowed down slightly and has more hidden stuff and whatnot instead.

I really have no large issue with the kremlins being removed but is the best that nintendo could come up with is tiki villians? really? after all the insane amount of enemy designs they have created for zelda, metroid, and mario and that is what they give retro to work with.

day 1 anyway

oh hummm

that's the first thing i've heard about the game that makes me ):

i hope it's not too easy as a result

Im sure King K Rool is going to be the final boss behind the Tiki Mask, just the ET final boss Mega Man 2.
But if they say something now they will fuck the secret.
And if at the end he is not the final boss, Kremlins will return in DKCR2
