Dragon Ball Super |OT| 28 Episodes Later

Episode was bad and it should feel bad.

I HATE that as everyone gets stronger, it almost feels like they get weaker at the same time. Goku at SSJ3 pulling back to do a Kamehameha only to let out a pitiful energy ball was some weak shit. At the very least, they should have had him connect with Beerus once.

And yeah I know Kai's voice actor could give a fuck about delivering a performance that's not him almost falling asleep, but it's just so ridiculous when the animation shows that he's really pissed off, only for him to sound like he's about to pass out at the same time.

Aside from his face, this looks great.

Just so y'all know, it very likely is an issue of scheduling (i.e. animators are only given so much time to produce something that HAS to go on air at time X, NO EXCUSES) then an issue of actual money (though I guess salaries and salaried time have to go into it) or talent (there may be some amateurs amongst the production crew but given the likely conditions even the skilled professionals in the group would struggle to produce something good).

He's old as fuck and has health issues. It's actually a minor miracle that he's even able to reprise his role in Super at all. This constant shitting on Yanami needs to stop.

Well, from a Western perspective, where VAs are much less valued in general, if he can't really perform his role anymore he should have been replaced in order to avoid damaging the production itself with his poor performance.

Of course, that's likely not how the Japanese public would think about it if Toei had kicked him out while he wanted to reprise his role.

Yeah I think it's time to drop this show.
It's basically a slower and worse looking version version of Battle of Gods (which I didn't quite like to begin with).

(Almost) no one is saying it's his fault. But if he is too old or sick to play his role then they should have gone with another actor.
This obession with preserving the original cast to the point that it affects the quality of the show is stupid.

You don't have 84 years old Sean Connery delivering a bad performance as a modern ladykiller action hero because "he is the original bond"

As someone who has stopped watching the One Piece anime because of Toei animation doing this exact thing for an extended number of episodes, this recap episode for the movie is just the place where Toei would use spare change for the animation budget.
You might be new to this but they will have some episodes that will look good and a lot that will be trash looking. Hope you manage at least a good haul of well-done episodes before the series ends.

People are shitting on his performance because it's a really bad performance and an extremely noticeable mismatch for the character in every way. Yeah it's cool they brought back as much of the original cast as they can, and that he's still willing to do it despite his age and health. But it's not working at all.

it looks ridiculous, its a complete inconsistent mess, even compared to episodes 1-4. im genuinely upset its so bad, i hope to god heads are rolling and things are being corrected.

But it's been this way for literally hundreds of episodes. Nothing will change.

Yeah no need to keep an actor that's clearly not up for the task.

Perfect Preservation of the original cast cannot be expected. Super is also going to be capturing a new audience, too. The show needs to be good.

But no, lets not drop the show. It's just hard to sit through this week to week when we already know what's going to happen. There's really no surprises and that's what hurts. If we were binge watching this show and BoG never existed, it'd be fine (minus the poor illustrations).

I'm confused as to why Gregory is in this.

Toriyama only wrote a story outline. He has no active involvement with the finished script for this tv show as far as we know. So, the anime staff has much more freedom to throw in additions like Gregory than in the movies, where he was revising the script or writing it himself (in RoF's case).

I was surprised that he was talking a lot this episode though. It seemed like ever since the Freeza saga ended he was just floating in silence around Kaioh. This might be the first time in years that he got actual lines. Although I think he had already grunted and given a surprised yell in the previous episode.

I don't think you quite understand his importance to Dragon Ball. He is the voice of Dragon Ball, he's narrated every episode from the very beginning. For a show that is clearly relying on its nostalgic appeal to hook its audience, they need him there. I'm sure the Japanese audience is more understanding and appreciative of his effort than western audiences, and really that's all Toei cares about. They don't care what people who are viewing the episodes illegally in foreign countries think.

I'm not confused anymore. Also a little disappointed lol. But it's whatever. Canon in Dragon Ball is weird.

And he can still narrate, he sounds fine doing that. All I'm saying is his performance as King Kai is fucking bad. He may be the decades-long voice of Dragon Ball but that has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the guy is a really poor match for the character at this point.

Is fixing shitty animation on home video release really something that happens? I'm not sure I've ever seen that.

It happens with many anime series, even sometimes completely redrawing frames rather than just editing them. However, Toei rarely does that. The main incentive of doing it is boosting DVD/Blu-Ray sales, and that's not Toei's focus for a show like this.

I think Toei also put Gregory in to stay consistent with the Dragon Ball Kai run that just finished.

I wonder what they're going to do regarding hell. It was kind of odd that they left Freeza's scenes in filler hell during the Majin Buu battle, so they might follow that up, rather than going with the movie's version.

Yup. He's not "half assing" anything. Dude has been THE voice of Dragon Ball since the very beginning (as the narrator).

I wish they kept him as the narrator but replaced him as Kaio. He can still pull off the relaxed, calm voice of the narrator, but he struggles with Kaio, especially when the character gets worked up.

After seeing that episode and a lot of the current One Piece episodes i'm kinda glad Digimon Adventure Tri is now a 6 part movie series, at least toei can't fuck it up and would have to put some effort into it.
