Dragon Quest 11 (JP) |OT| whynotboth.gif

Oh wow, the
spider
boss is a toughie. That volley of missiles makes it tough to stay healed up.

I was getting better luck toward the end of that first attempt, but a lot of my guys were KO'd. Camus can poison him with his dagger which is cool to see in a boss fight.

The cave leading up to this boss is a squirmy good time. Very dank.

Anyone know how to get the キラキラ on the ceiling of 3F デルカダール城?

Ok then, I come freshly from beating the post game and watching the true ending.

I'm kind of lost for words here, its hard to believe that these people have been making incredible games for 30 years, Horii and the team are still on top of their form, I'm essentially on the honey moon period yet, I was gushing through the entire ending and I'm rather shaking now, but I don't think its too crazy to call this game the best of the entire series, at the very least it has to be the best JRPG released since Final Fantasy IX, top to bottom, the game is fantastic.

Even at level 80+ the final boss was a bit of a challenge, the battle raged on for some 30 minutes, though that was also due to me stopping to listen to the fantastic music, its the hypest final boss theme of the series, as typical for super bosses it has an absurd ammount of moves per turn, but my strategy was enough to beat it anyway.

I owed mostly to my boy Camus, I actually ignored him for most of the game as I found him to be the least interesting, but goddamn he becomes incredibly powerful at later levels, if it weren't for him the final hours would've probably been a huge challenge.

Everything bit of story was compelling and interesting, every character likable and relatable, the world was beautiful and was a ton of fun to explore, every resolves in an incredibly satisfying way, I've never been as happy to see a game end since I burst into tears while reading Keifer's message at the end of VII after a grueling 2 hour battle with Orgodemir.

As a whole the entire ending sequence was this incredible love letter for long time fans, the very end specially the most, I honestly expect something special to come from that.

During my 70 hour playthrough I was never bored, the game just surpassed my wildest expectations, it was just incredible.

I'll probably write some extended thoughts tomorrow, the best stuff always happen when its super late here.

So yeah, complete the post game, you won't be dissapointed, best $100 ever spent.

People who finished the game, does the end of the game tease a potential trilogy or a
DQI remake
of some sort? I guess they'd want to reuse the tech and the assets soon.

Just a yes or no will be enough, but itms something i'm incredibly curious about.

So much, too much :P at least 3...but that mean another AAA DQ this fast? do we live in heaven?

But I think they may buy a new assets from new company too for new mainline titles, can't say much because I know very few details and mostly using my ass for imagination the situation, maybe DQ, maybe another division 6 games like Nier/Drakengard or new IP.

I literally said the same thing a page or two back. For fans of FFIX, this game is really something special.

I can totally see the connexion because of the ensemble cast that ranges from kid to old man...and the pacing. VI comes to mind too. But regarding FFIX and DQXI, I think the latter is way way better in terms of gameplay since the combats and loading are so snappy.

Excited to hear this. FFIX is my favorite along FFVI. Maybe this will dethrone DQVIII as my favorite of the series.
This was already my most awaited game before impressions arrived, now I don't think any other game will have a chance against it in 2018. I hope for it releases before summer 2018 here in the west.

Does this game has Persona 5's problem, where some parts becomes a chore a few dozen hours into the game?

No. And DQ is a really, REALLY different type of jrpg than Persona 3 4 5. Persona is rather a "life simulation" mixed to a dungeon rpg. DQ is the most classic jrpg you can get (seems natural since it invented jrpg) : world map, villages, dungeons.

I've asked this before but no one replied to me. :p

How big is the world map and how is it compared to the world map of DQVIII? Namely for the PS4 version.

IMO DQ8 has bigger world map.

Interesting... does it have a similar approach to DQVIII map namely it feels like an open world map?

So, the trick to taking down the
spider
boss was to switch out my hero for Sylvia. He outclasses my hero in every way at the moment. Again, there was a tense couple of turns where the boss was in zone mode.

I had all of my guys in zone too but Veronica was wrapped up so... couldn't execute a big move.

Really liked the story with the tournament. Felt bad
for Humphrey
but it all seemed to work out in the end.

I've just beaten the
Kraken
boss.
Again very easy fight, it ended in less than 3 minutes and I din't even use any buffs.
I don't know guys, am I too overleveled?I was level 24 with almost everyone when I faced this boss.
The thing is,it's not like I want to be overleveled, I just beat the enemies I find in every area like I do with every other rpg I play.
The game seems to be giving you a looooot of exp.

Every party member that's joined since after the beginning part has been like 5 levels ahead of my hero. I have no idea if I'm underleveled or they just like giving you overleveled party members. The game's still been pretty easy at that level so I don't really feel underleveled

Finding all the bowgun targets kind of burnt me out on exploring the maps unfortunately.

I know it's an easter egg hunt and that's like the entire point, but I kind of wish there was some kind of hint feature. Seems like I've spent like 20 minutes just looking for that very last target several times and it really got on my nerves after a while. Sometimes you can walk right by one but not notice it because your camera turning wasn't thorough enough

Getting no luck on the 100 coin slots in the casino. Been blasting the a button for most of the day. Got one lot of metal spins and two lots of free spins and nothing.

I just wanna hit that Jackpot!

Question, doors the story in this context to dragon quest 9? That cinematic into (which is amazing) is really making me think so

This FF IX and VI talk has me excited. My problem with more recent DQs is pacing and characterization, and an engaging ensemble cast going on an adventure with a coherent story and a nice overarching framework is what I really want out of a jrpg right now.

Does this game has Persona 5's problem, where some parts becomes a chore a few dozen hours into the game?

depends on how you play. I didn't have the chore problem in persona given that I was maxing out everything on my first playthrough so everyday was a meaningful move and the next storyline to watch always around the next corner. There was a certain pace to how stat boosting, slink events, etc happened for me that felt very natural.

I'd say DQ11 like many of the other dqs just has a very enjoyable flow. It mostly would only get chore like if you invest in doing extra stuff.
Like right now I'm doing clean up(before probably triggering a big event) filling the monster list where I'm missing a lot of rare encounters so that is def a bit of a chore.

In terms of characterization, it is indeed quite different from previous DQ since the main cast tend to still be present/have something to say/do in story scenes, outside of their own story ark.
If you take DQVII for instence, once they joined and their story ark is over, most of the main cast barely exist outside of the "party talk". Here, it is closer to VIII, where they will contine to show up and be relevant during story scenes, to an even larger degree. Add to that the party talk and the "campsite" scenes and it is obvious they wanted a stronger focus on your party this time.

So I'm trucking along in the post game and maybe it's because I'm doing things in the wrong order
(I went to the cloud island, got my key and now I'm visiting all cities, taking story quests and fighting all those additional bosses before finding the 3 sprouts)
, but things hit hard. And I'm level 59!
I usually end boss battles with 1-2 casualties, just because I know I can finish off a boss in 1 turn, so I play it "safe", instead of reviving people so that everyone gets exp. I think I'm a bad person.

Also, it's so weird that you can switch dead party members, but you can't switch characters affected by like half of the debuffs.

Oh my... Gonna be a long year waiting for that localization. If I don't import of course.

I've been mostly gathering so I only noticed just now but dq 11 still has the max buy "9" in quantity restriction.

*facepalm* Someday the guys over there will let a few of the young people implement all the qol features that should be there.... someday...

This sounds great. VIII's characterization was pretty good at points, although small party, cypher MC, and relatively poor narrative pacing didn't help them shine I don't think.

VII's is exactly what I don't like. Much better in IV and V.

I'm wondering for the fancy clothes trophy, whether you need to have the clothes in your inventory or just need to have the item checked off in your play record. Any hunches?

Awesome.

...

How do you feel about the overall narrative's structure and balance? I don't want spoilers so sorry if you that ties your hands too much. I'm just so damn curious about the shape of the scenario :P.

One of the things I love about DQ is when the scenario takes a creative overall shape, like with the chapters in IV, the life-story in V, the dream/real world in VI complete with dream you having to helplessly watch things happen, the past/future islands in VII, and such. Does XI have any interesting general conceits like this? I feel this is one of Horii's strengths as a scenario writer. He is good at finding creative, repeatable but mutable, ways to set his vignettes up.

As to the balance: do you feel the game is lopsided towards the central story/cast, towards vignettes, or more evenly balanced? A lot of the posts in this thread are pointing to the core story being really strong and the cast being quite good; I'm curious what you think of the game's "smaller" stories.

To situate this kind of thinking, I think thinking about VIII and VII is useful:

DQVIII has arcs for the central cast members and there are stronger stories at core moments in those arcs, but generally speaking the vignettes aren't that good outside of those ones imo. Because of this focus on the main cast, and it is a charming cast, charmingly voice acted, it is more like a character driven JRPG.

DQVII is just about the antithesis of this. It has lots of quality vignettes that play around with the time travel mechanics of the game but the cast sort of disappears into the background most of the time after the introduction with the notable exception of a certain vignette. It is mostly about people other than you and your friends and this is actually quite interesting for a game.

I'd hoped to finish by the end of my vacation, but that's definitely not going to happen. I was out of commission yesterday due to the air conditioner going out, anyway. Still feels like a long way to go, but I'm still loving every second of it. I'm glad I'm further than some people though since I've been seeing stuff I'd personally consider spoilery posted openly both here and on Twitter.

I don't think it does. I'm 25 hours in.

It's a bunch of smallish sized zones that are dots on a world map. Some dots are connected (when two zones are next to each other) but for the most part you can only travel from dot to dot by spell, ship, etc.

Thank god I don't twitter and I've managed to avoid clicking on all tags in this thread...

Still my curiosity might kill me, so to speak. (in the next 6-12 months :()

That's disappointing to hear.
I hoped for a big, connected world to travel in.
That feeling of adventure was the best thing in DQVIII.

Sorry to hear. My dryer in my washer/dryer combo unit went two weeks ago though maintenance replaced it on Friday.

So far the maps feel like larger to scale DQIX zones than DQVIII but the graphics in the PS4 version makes the world still feel large enough. FF should consider going towards this direction instead, larger zones but not necessarily open world.

On the spoiler note,
the medal "king" in this is really quite unexpected XD.

I might buy the 3DS version when I complete this. It's been so fun.

Kinda like FFXII?
