Dragon Quest Heroes PC Performance Thread

Koei-Tecmo finally has a not-shit console-to-PC port in terms of porting the wrong version to PC?

Color me shocked. I legitimately thought they'd use the PS3 version as a base, even if they only localized the PS4 version for consoles.

Let that speak volumes on how consistently they fuck up on PC. :/

No, not at all. Maybe you can make an argument for AK, but the other two are far superior in any possible metric.

Seems legit...
I know you don't like resolution locks. At least it uses PS4 assets and has controller prompts. K-T is learning, bit by bit. Also, better port than both FFXIII and Type-0, looking at people's reaction.

I guess I'll be buying this to show my support. I have no idea what the fuck Dragon Quest is, but I like musou.

Dragon Quest is a classic RPG series that's ridiculously popular in Japan, so popular they had the games release not on school days after tons of students skipped out on class iirc. There's more to that story but I can't recall.

Complex games initially have bugs on some systems. Woohoo. That's extremely hard to prevent.

Locking the resolution once again on your Nth PC port speaks to a degree of carelessness, and, frankly, wilful ignorance that's completely incomparable. It's also exceedingly simple to fix -- very much unlike trying to release a complex game without any bugs on any arbitrary configuration, which is an intractable problem.

You just need to actually want to fix it.

Locking the resolution is really stupid. I don't even know why they don't seem to get the memo. It's like I wonder what's the point of having KT USA or Europe if they don't pass the word.

I think the people who make these ports have probably heard of peoples desires for arbitrary resolutions.

They just don't care.

Not providing support for arbitrary screen resolutions is the number one way to get me to skip your game. Shit drives me nuts. There's almost never a good reason for the omission.

I'm not sure if it's just clueless developers, publishers that only want to pay for the absolute bare minimum of money required for a port, or both.

It's nice to see the issue gaining more traction on GAF, though. It was hard to get people to pay attention until 1440p monitors became more common.

What you really want to look for are issues not present on consoles. AK was such a shit port because it'd run worse than it did on consoles far as I recall, and still requires a disproportionately more powerful PC to run well. That is certainly not the case with Fallout 4, and that can be a buggy abomination on any platform.

Less knowledge on JC3, though it sounds like the FPS sucks so that's probably a similar situation in a buggy base game but fine PC version.

Which was also present in the console versions of SOTF, wasn't it? It isn't just a PC issue in that case.

Technically it was also present in the old console versions too, it's just that those versions didn't run at a framerate where someone would have noticed (though it actually wasn't much of a problem in the PC version either for me).

I got an i5 and the game runs at 60fps with the settings high. Wonder why the minimum specs require an i7, then again I'm pretty new to all this PC stuff so maybe I just don't get it.

IIRC it's a first generation i7, therefore being not as powerful as newer CPUs.

Aaah, okay. I haven't purchased any PC ports from Koei Tecmo before but this one seems pretty good! Should SE and KT ever bring Dissidia Arcade for PC, this gives me a lot more faith for their future ports.

I'm pretty satisfied with this, the game looks great on my new monitor, I got a nice deal on my 900p monitor last month and it's nice playing games in not 4:3 resolutions.

Yeah, it's kinda weird that they're using an i7 from 2011 (according to wikipedia) in their recommended specs. It makes the requirements seem misleadingly high for no good reason. The i5 I bought earlier this year (4690K) is running the game just fine.

I guess with DX11, there won't be any SGSSAA solution huh? And with the resolution locked at 1080p atm, DSR/VSR is out of the question as well. So the only option is FXAA or SMAA it seems. Bummer.

Wow, I'm kinda disappointed with this port. Seems poorly optimized from my time playing/tinkering with settings. I can run GTAV, DSII among other newish games at 1080/60 yet this only in the 40s. Shitty. I hope my 2500k/280X setup does better. Will have to try later.

Yea I tried all the bits that worked with prior KT games and no SGSSAA. I'm injecting SMAA which is ok I guess.

Uhh.. what's going on with this game? I can't even pick 1080 option, mine only go up to 720 resolution. Messing around in config tool does nothing.

I think you're taking the limited/locked screen size thing a little too far.
I'll agree it's BS that they only have it go up to 1080p right now, but they can always add an update that allows for higher resolutions.
If we can accept waiting for fixes for FO4 or JC3, why not apply the same for this game?
Yeah granted cuz of K-T, but make enough noise for this and who knows.

I've yet to run into any issue, I'm extremely happy with this port. And it's such a fun, charming game to boot :] Late GOTY contender for me, I think.

This game would look amazing in 4k..

hopefully someone figures out a way to unlock the resolution or K-T decides to listen to people for once and fix it.

You must be new to Koei PC game bro.

Game crashes at start up. Not surprised. Guess I will run this game in windowed mode.

Have you gone in the config tool and set it to Win 7 compatibility mode? It's recommended to do so, apparently the game can be unstable on more recent versions of windows. I set it up right away and haven't had any crashes so far on Win 8.

how the port ? i heard many people can't get 60 FPS from it.

Seems relatively decent to me, at least as far as performance goes. With everything maxed out, I get a not quite rock solid 60 fps. There's occasional dips but for the most part it holds. I only have a GTX 960, though, so that might why. Haven't really tried lowering settings to see if I can get the 60 fps to hold.

Because the issues aren't even in the same galaxy of complexity in terms of the effort required to eliminate them, and because K-T has so far shown an utter unwillingness to improve on such a simple omission despite that.

Well, I'm running the game perfectly fine at highest settings. Then again, I have a fairly high-power rig, GTX 970 with an i5 6600K.

If anyone's interested, I made a little Reshade profile to make the game a bit more colorful and less orange-y. Comparisoooon:
Here it is if anyone wants to fiddle diddle with it. It's using the HSV shader from Custom FX. I also have some SMAA that I tweaked to not muck with the UI too much, but it's not in the screenshot for some reason.

Is there any sort of resource to learn the basics of why and how the game's engine is capped at 1080P where other games are free of such restrictions?

I'm running Windows 8.1 and have an Nvidia card. Oddly, putting the game in Windows 7 mode consistently causes it to crash when it tries to load the gameplay engine after the intro. Running without compatibility mode at a lower graphical resolution has allowed me to play the game (my system's a bit underpowered).

Mind posting your PC specs please?

Sager 9170 gaming notebook
  • CPU: 2.3 GHz i7-3610QM
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 675M
  • 24 GB RAM
I'm thinking the CPU is the biggest bottleneck since it falls below the game's minimum specs. I can upgrade it to a 3.0 GHz i7-3940XM, which I hope to do soon. Can also upgrade the video card to an Nvidia GeForce 970M or the hella expensive 980M, but I wanted to try the CPU first.

Performance in this game is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Maximum settings at 1080p -> 52-54 fps
Minimum settings at 1080p -> 53-55 fps

Maximum settings at 900p -> 58-60 fps
Minimum settings at 900p -> 59-60 fps

Max settings at 720p -> 60 fps
Min settings at 720p -> 60 fps

I mean, disabling shadows, AO, lighting and every possible effect only give me 1 or 2 extra frames per second. And those framerates are exactly the same looking at the floor or fighting with a lot of enemies. What is showed in screen doesn't affect the framerate.

I've enabled SLI and the performance is exactly the same. I don't think the CPU is the bottleneck (2700 HT on @ 5 ghz ) because lowering resolution affects framerate, but performance variation is not linear with resolution. Does not make any sense.
