[E3] Do we really need the next-gen consoles so soon?

I'd be happy with another 5 more years of this generation, or even 10. The graphics are fine as it is, just give me more great games.

I don't care about gens anymore, they really are a thing of the past, but I want to see hardware refreshes every 2-3 years.

By 2020, yes, absolutely I want it.

Sure we could keep squeezing out everything this generation is worth, but at some point there's meager gains to be had and it's just time to move on. Several titles falter in CPU heavy situations. 2020 will have given the 8th gen a reasonably long life without starting to strangle games as bad as the end of the 7th gen did.

If you try to stretch it too far you get the late 7th gen with lots of titles with framerate issues and having to keep decreasing resolution just to run games acceptably. I'd rather just move on to new BC hardware at an elegant time, and 2020 seems like it.

Yes, the sooner the better. What is wrong with you? Things need to move forward.

Don't worry about half assed ports for the next generation. The transtion to the next gen will be the smoothest ever.

After watching Microsoft's E3 conference (plus EA's) I really feel like that we have just reached the point that we were waiting for since the start of the gen. All the games shown were insane graphically and had awesome animations and the difference between this and lastgen is obvious. I think there is definitely a generational leap and I'm finally content.

Yes the games shown today and yesterday were some of the best looking this gen, but it's mostly because it's all running on better hardware. These games were running on Xbox One X(or PC), that is the difference you are seeing.

2020 is not too soon for next-gen. This gen will be 7 years old in 2020 and it will be time for new machines around that time. It is true that the graphics jump from current to next-gen will not be as big as the leap we saw this gen, but that is mostly because of Xbox One X(and PS4 Pro).

I hope current gen stays for the next 5 years at least. Probably won't, but I don't feel any need for new hardware. What we have is good enough.

2020 would probably be the sweet spot for me, I would be happy with 2021, 2019 would be kind of dumb and 2018 is thankfully not happening.

I bet most of the "in engine " footage is from the PC versions and not the console.

So yes, I think, we do need new consoles and I don't think 2020 is too early. That's almost 2 and a half years from now (assuming a November launch)

You mean its from xbox one x.

7nm will be the next big leap in tech and after that there will be more or less stagnation techwise for the next few years as we more and more approach physical limits of transistor technology and die shrinks getting harder and harder. so yeah, 2019/20 would be the perfect timing for new consoles.

2020.
It's not about when you are ready for next gen, It's about when the console has hit high market penetration and sales have dropped off massively.
2 years is a long time, you will change your mind by the time they announce next gen.

Absolutely. Now more than ever, we need shorter console generations. Tech is moving much quicker because the leaps in tech power have become exponential. PS4/X1 were already weak when they came out, now they're paltry, especially with regards to CPUs. And when talking about graphics, Nvidia, who has been the one really pushing what graphics cards can really do, haven't released a new consumer card in well over a year, with the most of their cards having been released over two years ago now. When the newest cards come out, it'll push PS4/X1 even further back. This is the main issue with the Switch moving forward.

I think it would be ideal for the newest consoles to come out in 2020, giving the consoles a healthy 6 years on the market, and both the X1X and PS4Pro 3 and 4 years respectively on the market, so consumers who bought those around launch won't feel gypped. But I definitely think we're nearing the end of game consoles as we know them.

YES. New hardware every 6 year is good. PS4/X1 are weak compared what kind of hardware xbox360/ps3 had when it came out. We need much better cpu

I don't think we need new hardware in the next couple of years. And there aren't going to be any announcements for at least 2 years.

This is the best part of the gen: there are lots of news games, developers understand the hardware, games look great... no hurry for next gen right now. 2019 is too soon, but holidays 2020 looks like a sweet spot.

Maybe yes. But until date I think all games looked the same on the more powerful console as on the weaker (PS4-Pro, XBO-XBX) besides resolution and framerate, and we know that the weaker consoles can show insane visuals in the right hands.

I'd be okay with a 6-year refresh cycle (for the record, I did get a Pro - but that was more an incentive for myself to get a 4K TV as well, the plan worked). IF the launch price is decent. I think PS4/One showed that $400 is an acceptable price, $500 less so. And PS3 showed that $600 is firmly in the "you can fuck right off"-territory.

Yes, we desperately need new systems. LoD, Draw Distance and Shadows (and a better form of AO would be nice - like the 3D HBAO from Destiny 2 on PC) are all areas where the current systems are severely lacking. It's one of the reasons why I still prefer to game multiplats on PC.

I prefer shorter console cycles. 5 years in between would be fine by me, so that'd mean the new system releases next year. That's not gonna happen though.

Uhh, PS4/One were released in 2013, so 5 years in between would mean the next gen would release this year. That's not happening, as we know.

But next year is possible. Unlikely (due to the AMD roadmap, I don't think mass-produced APUs @ 7nm are quite there next year), but possible.

Xbox might need it to get ahead of PS4 even though the X came late.
Then they may put themselves in the position of upsetting current XBONEX owners......Though the current XBONEX installbase is very small compared to vanilla XBOX-ONE, all you hear about is the X and it's 4k, it's like the few XBONEX owners forgot about "900p is pretty indistinguishable from 1080p" or "if i sit 6ft from my tv, I can't see the difference".......Right now, it's all about uncompromised results or bust......as if no Xbox faithful has a regular XBOX-ONE anymore......Funny enough, there was this poster who made a statement that PS5 won't differentiate itself from XBONEX because X is already doing 4k and all what PS5 would do ;), I wonder what his stance is on the XBOXTWO in that light?

All in all though, I think MS will try to keep it as close to Sony's launch as possible so they won't be too far behind in terms of specs. If they do launch the same time I think Sony will have the upperhand in custom design, but yet, if MS believes they need a head start it may not be more than 3 months at best....

Lol at everyone saying next gen will be 60fps standard. People say that every gen and it never happens. Devs will always opt for flashy over frame rate.
Yeah agreed, but next gen will be different primarily because of the CPU. No one is saying that all games will be 60fps, but a much higher percentage will be as a result of the CPU, especially open world games, racers etc.....I mean UC5 and TLOU3 can blow everyone's sockets out with 30fps, but it's also likely that Naughty may shoot for 60fps for UC5 for the first time because of the CPU, GOW will be a locked 60fps etc.........Titles like NFS which is 30fps on consoles, Just Cause, etc...should surely be 60fps. So many titles should get the conversion and it would be a more popular feat next gen.....It's time the 60fps standard is met on consoles anyway, as we're already getting competitive games like Quake Champions that are targetting 120fps.....Many monitors are pushing 120Hz atm and even MS offering that as an option on XBOX is a reality, at least next gen console hardware will have the oomph to push some of these features more readily...but it's time we up the console standard..whydontwe!

I would love to see bumped up console every 2 years, with backward compatibility
Normal Console = in 2 years => Half upgrade == in 2 more years ==> another half upgrade.

Games should work with future versions, and last "half a gen".

I guess the answer to the op really depends on what type of hardware was used when all those game trailers were captured. But I'd personally like next gen to wait till fall 2020/2021.

TLoU ran below 20 fps in some areas. Do you really think that team is going to hold back so that they can keep to 60 fps? They seem to have priority on drawing what they want on the screen and not how often it is drawn.

On console you have an exact limit how much processing and memory bandwidth are available. You have to make the choice are we going to add more fancy lighting/shadowing, put more characters on screen, and some sort of filters; or are you going to draw twice (or thrice in the case of TLoU) as many frames per second?

EDIT: One caveat is that when making a remaster (or especially a port to a similar but more powerful architecture.): If there is nothing that is bound to the clock speed in a weird way then upping the framerate can be one of the easier upgrades. It doesn't require extra artwork and can be as simple as removing or upping the framerate limit if there are no dependencies on the clock being a particular speed.

Absolutely not.

X1X cycle has barely started. I'm good another 5 years with that bad boy in my entertainment center.

There's no reason for a new gen anytime soon. We've just reached a point where(some) devs are actually making good looking games and they still haven't even come close to tapping into the full power of the PS4pro or especially XboxOneX.

Honestly, what an awful move Xbox made announcing a new console in development... they must really hate selling consoles. Should have waited at least until they had something significant to show...

As a PS4 owner, I want this gen to be even longer than the last one. Diminished returns on graphical fidelity (even though we can obviously push more) and we're still severaly lagging behind when it comes to environmental destruction and world responsiveness. Plus there's a renaissance of $10-30 "indie" games (I struggle to call them indie, seeing how many are coming from SEGA, Square Enix, etc) coming to the market. The PS4's huge library is only getting bigger.

If Xbox One owners want to kick the can down the road again and get another console, that's on them. The PS4 and the Switch are likely my last "modern" consoles for the next decade, so I couldn't care any less what comes out next unless it's a total reversal of the gaming trends we've been seeing over the last decade.

All you need to do is look at The Division on the X, God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn and then imagine them in 60fps AND iterated systems that may not have been able to be advanced or removed from the game altogether in able to keep a constant fps.

On base hardware. No pro or X support.

Trust me, If HZD2 comes out on PS5 it will have even bigger world and have much more detailed models but it would still run on 30FPS.
