If you didn’t see my last post and are curious as to what echochrome ii is all about, it’s a unique puzzle game using the PlayStation Move motion controller to shine a light on a series of blocks and objects to create realistic shadows on the wall. The blocks and objects you see in each level will cast different shadows depending on your movement so as you alter the perspective and angles by adjusting this light source, you will manipulate the shadows they cast to ultimately reveal a solution to the puzzle and guide your character to the exit. You can check out some actual gameplay in the video above.

Once you check out the game for yourself I think you’ll enjoy how it uses PlayStation Move in this rather unique and original way. The best way to think of it is to treat the controller like a flashlight that you shine on these objects to manipulate the shadow within the scenery—this is actually one of the ideas that helped the dev team come up with the concept.
echochrome ii has 100 built in levels and there are three different ways to enjoy each one. Navigating the character to the goal by creating a shadow path is called “escort” mode. Additionally, there is “echo” mode and “paint” mode. In “echo” mode, the objective is to collect the ghost-looking characters called “echo.” You will see a few of them in each level, so collect them all to clear the stage.
Video explaining how the Move works as a flashlight.

Finally, time to put my Move to use!

I quickly grew tired of Sports Champions, and the rest of the launch line-up was baaaad.

I hope that they do an Echo trilogy UMD release.

Edit: wait, is this one Move-only or Move-preferred?

The demo blew my mind so I'm getting this. Loved the previous Echochrome games and hopefully Sony will keep the franchise around on the PSN.

You can only play it with the Move.

Its designed specifically around Move. Why would you even want this game if you hate Move so much?
Because the first one was good and it sounds like it could easily be done with analogue sticks?

if you play it you'd see it wouldn't be that easy or intuitive to play with just sticks because of the depth aspect, though I'm sure it'd be technically possible.

Comes out this week, anyone else grabbing it? The Move's PSN line-up is pretty impressive imo, especially with this.
At least Sony understands how to keep us posted with the move before the big releases! Microsoft should learn the lesson and release xbla kinect Games...
anyway this was my favorite demo in the starter pack disc, so I'm grabbing it day 1!

I haven't picked up a move yet, but when I do, I'm grabbing this first thing. The concept looks too intriguing :D

I like the first one; I'd probably get it if it weren't Move-only.

Same. I love the first one, but this is not a system seller that will get me to pay $100+ on hardware to play it.

Conclusion:

But consider how much echochrome ii gets right. It's a game that dares to tear up the rulebook and start over in the quest for a better sequel, and is all the better for venturing beyond the boundaries established in the previous game. The sort of old-school puzzle game that demands patience and dedication, it repays both in abundance.

I'll have to check this out.

The Move is a solid device, but it's slowly creeping towards paper-weight status for me. I have nothing to use it with.

Thankfully, this game has looked interesting, at least it'll put the controller to use for a little while longer.

I hope they've changed the controls from the demo to include the Move's position (I'm assuming that's why it missed launch).

Pointing alone felt like a missed opportunity.

I loved the demo. The camera/controls of the game give me this nostalgic feeling of looking at a toyset with a flashlight.

This got kinda ignored due to the massive PSN update + Christmas etc., hm? Leaderbords show less than 100 users that finished all levels of the first set (it only tracks the total playtime of a finished set) and e.g. the PAL version only has 32 ratings (e.g. Tetris has 239 and was also released this week) in the PS Store.

Well, I guess being Move-exclusive is the main reason because of the limited player base.

:/
Though I have to say I almost didn't buy it myself due to the 12.99€ price and other releases, but I got the first game for half price and that one got so much support (they basically patched in every XMB feature and more).

so much for that, now the impressions:

It's quite a neat puzzle game. Controls better than the first game and despite the fears only the first batches of levels are as obvious as the ones shown in the trailer etc. Though I finished the A (tutorial), B and C levels and didn't have real problems so far. Some stuff you just have to try like moving your character manually using the shadows.

There should be 8 sets (+ the tutorial). (so, at least 80 levels?)

I didn't really read any previews for this game, so I was pleasantly surprised that you have 3 different modes for EVERY level.

I recorded some videos ingame to show each mode in the same level (the very first one, B-01):

escort
That's the one presented in previews, the demo etc.

echo
This is basically the mode from the first echochrome (collect all echo shadows). Here you can see that even in this basic level you have to use a different layout (than the "normal" one to get to the goal) to get to all shadows.

paint
The shadow characters color the "real" blocks in their color by walking over their shadows, you have to reach a certain percentage to clear the level.

After clearing a level you have the option to upload a replay to youtube. So there will probably be a video for each level to look it up if you're stuck.

It uploads the videos in 720p, you can optionally use the PS Eye video feed as the background (this will make the files much larger though):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsrVZ-cr1TY
(here I also demonstrate how to crush your character and to throw him down :p )

Unlike in the first game (which had a Picture-in-Picture solution), you can't record yourself WHILE playing and you can't even record the audio (at least I couldn't) which makes this rather pointless.
Speaking of missing features, you also can't export the video to your HDD instead and for some reason there is no custom music support >:| (there was in the demo IIRC). At least the music is imo pretty great in this one (in echochrome it kinda got annoying).

Move works well (I set the sensitivity to high), just like in the demo. You don't even need the camera feed so you can play lying down, holding the controller behind your head or however you feel comfortable playing puzzle games.

The shadow character can also climb over certain heights and doesn't get stuck by little gabs or steps, so you don't have to align everything perfectly which was sometimes quite annoying in the first game.

Didn't check the create mode yet, but you unlock stuff for it during sp.
Level sharing seems to be much improved, it's basically like LBP now, tagging levels with stickers etc.

So this is:
1) a good (though not complex) and creative puzzle game.
2) a nice use for the Move controller
3) due to the amount of content (and future content due to the create/share modes) worth the price.

And I'll end this post with an ingame screenshot (XMB screenshot support, click for the original file)

(the blue stuff is a hole btw, so no shadows and you will have to restart if you move your character into it)

I'm a bit disappointed that they couldn't upgrade the image quality, way too much aliasing for such a game, 1080p doesn't help much here.

Pretty sure there's 100 levels; some sets have more than others, and there's extras to unlock as well.

It's a simple game, but it's fun, and definitely one of the best uses of the Move controller thus far. Hopefully more people will give it a try. :)

I appreciated how unique this game was. The Move being a flashlight, requiring you to manipulate shadows...cool stuff. I missed the release date but I will definitely buy after I beat the latest PSN games I bought (Fret Nice and Trine<3).
