eSports and the Fighting Game Community

It isn't just another tournament. It's a league that runs on vastly different rules from how the FCG rules their tournament. They are expecting the FGC to suck it up and accept how they run the whole thing. Inkblot has made it clear that the FGC run under the arcade spirit that any Tom Dick and Harry can just come to challenge a top player and potentially ruin their shot at the prize money. Which is something that isn't acceptable to the MLG.

May I ask why you believe MLG is only open to the top players? Anyone who wishes can sign up for the SC2 comp if they wish, and I do not see why it would be different for fighting games.

Also EVO wouldn't be affected if MLG picks up fighting game, but your Season's Beatings, NEC, SCR, FR etc will be affected greatly because the people in MLG are a bunch of bastards when it comes to scheduling the events.

As far as I know, all of the MLGs are scheduled at the beginning of the year.

The fact that people seem to hope for anything from MLG is worrying, as if it's their last chance before obscurity. Keep calm.
this is an important point. mlg didn't make sc2, sc2 made mlg. hoping for the tournament to lay a gilded path to being able to watch sf4 in your local bar is getting it ass backwards.

How do you know all of this?

Clearly he's part of the FGC Illuminati.

Ski didn't really say anything that hasn't already been said, but I thought he articulated it a lot better than Tom Cannon did on that vVv Gaming stream.

Interesting that they bring up Devastation which started as a purely fighting game event which now branches off to include a whole bunch of different competitive games.

Jesus fuck, this shit is amazing. Speaking purely as a piece of writing it's astounding how he manages to pack in so much factual information without losing his 'voice' entirely. I don't think I know enough about either of the scenes to comment in an informed manner on much of it, but it's a very, very good piece of writing.

"Capcom games are part of the FGC but not the entire thing. WB and Namco aren't scared that we'll ruin the scene."

"Someone has and continues to poison the Capcom well. I have no idea why and to be honest I have moved on. Last time I'll mention it."

- Sundance

I've been a part of the MLG community for nearly 6 years now and believe they do a amazing job. I really hope we can get a fighting game on the circuit. Can't believe people think Sundance and Clap are business people with no "grass root" experience.

Also a followup by Sundance:

So no Capcom games at MLG?

Other fighting games?

lol

You know, everybody's interested in Capcom, but I wonder what the fate of ArcSys stuff and the other smaller games will be.
Of course those scenes aren't too big right now as is, but they've still got their crowds and the hype and all that.
And of course the publishers have been very supportive of it, with frequent pot bonuses and general interactivity (at least in California).

If Capcom does go after the bigger stuff and current majors die down as a result, I imagine the scenes of those games won't really get the chance to shine at all.

What's funny to me about arcade culture is that honestly, I've never liked it. I've had access to good arcades my whole life, but unless the arcade op is willing to replace broken parts, and have sticks mounted at the right height, and have the buttons spaced properly, and make sure the screens are at the correct resolution and don't lag, and use quality parts, it's far better to organise meets by yourself (although more hassle of course).

Also another downside is that when we had arcade ops basically within the fighting game community and supplying us hardware (still with all the previously mentioned issues btw, somehow most of those were still present), we had the added benefit of being blamed for them not breaking even because we weren't spending enough, rather than them doing any marketing at all and going after new customers.

First time I went to a proper LAN and saw everyone bring their own hardware (and a community that dwarfed our local fighting game scene), I was blown away at how much better it was. Almost makes me wish I liked those games.

Another small point which I thought was funny was the few times I've seen anime conventions run fighting game tournaments, they use really bizarre rules like having each "round" of a tournament use different amounts of in-game rounds (e.g. first set of matches in a bracket might be 1 round to win, next might be 2/3, then 3/5, then 4/7 etc), and also using different health percentages! Like they would use settings that nobody ever messes with. I think as long as people get the hardware and rules right, and basically run a tournament in a format that people are used to and are close to schedule, I don't really care who is behind it and where they come from.

ArcSys games tend to be too anime for the large crowd. I'd rather see KOF XIII myself.

The FGC definitely doesn't appreciate when guys like Sundance, Scoots, and djWHEAT suddenly come out of left field after IV comes out and start talking (with dollar signs in their eyes) about plans that can basically be paraphrased as "Welp, this is a cute lil' community you guys have built up, but why don't you let us take it from here! We'll get you on the tee-vee!"

Not once has anybody from the esports world come to the FGC with plan that was any more concrete than "If you let us take over, top players will make more money and then the scene will blow up somehow! Don't you want to see that happen?!" Given their terrible track record when it comes to fighting games, they're going to have to come a little bit stronger than that.

Nah, Sundance has said that he would let the fgc run the tournament, and the only thing MLG would do is add money to the pot and run their ads. He also just recently said that it's beneficial if the community(all competitive gaming communites, not just fgc) doesn't depend on MLG and has a strong enough community that it can survive without MLG. This is part of the reason why he's on the fence about Halo's future at MLG. The community has depended on MLG since the beginning and now they're seeing that they need grassroot tournaments + MLG tournaments in order to keep things fresh and exciting.

Are you guys listening to http://www.twitch.tv/livevvvgaming?

They're hitting the goddamn hard questions. Hosts are calling out Ultradavid on his article and saying that he is trying to protect his assets. :O

Also, a great question: What exactly will happen (good or bad) if MLG picks up fighting games?

Sp00ky is cornered!

EDIT: SHIT MANG. vvv CALLING OUT MR. WIZARD AND SPOOKY JUST POPPED LEVEL 3 X-FACTOR.

EDIT: This needed to happen, IMO.

daaamn... joined late. what happened with ultradavid and sp00ky?

Second time this week I've heard that VVV gaming podcacst being mentioned. They had Sundance (MLG CEO) on the other day. Good to see more coverage of the scene.

Spooky was on !@#$ Slasher today too. Spooky said it was too soon for 'esports' and fighting games to get together....

I still maintain that these back-and-forths are just steps in a courtship process between the two sides (basically, the fighting game community playing hard to get, perhaps trying to improve their negotiating position on various issues).

I really hope Ultra David/Tom Cannon have a response for this. These MLG guys are coming off really smug and it's really disenchanting.

The MLG guy seems pretty respectful.. but these other two interviewers or whatever seem to be leaning in one direction pretty heavy.

I kinda want this to finish already so I can go back and watch the Sp00ky segment, does anyone have a link to the MLG Live archive?

I didn't even know about this Evo/MLG beef. Explains a lot, actually.

One of the guys on the vVv show said that FGC (EVO specifically) is "Mom N Pop" ... If that is true... Well then I'm your motherfuckin' Daddy. Bring that shit.

He said it as in they fear the "corporations", nothing to do with the size of the place. They stopped and cleared that up.

ps: please release the mlg controller soon<3 I kid.

So much for the "homegrown" tag and "for the community by the community" if the term "Mom n Pop" is offending certain people... especially if not heard in context when said in the stream.

This fucker is going in on Fighting Game Events now. WOW. I tuned back in and he's generalizing one Fighting Game Event occurrence of witnessing stealing to the entire community and telling people they should trust MLG instead because he expects some civility out of them, and that he didn't want to say to Sp00ky that he's been to a FGC event before.

Just wow.

EVO already had 80k people watching real time at once. If it gets any larger...

well damn

If some folks think like that about our largest event...

It sounds to me like for whatever reason he wants to be a heel to the FGC.

I had to just turn it off at the end. I couldn't fucking stand listening to that drivel.

That guy would have been far, far better off letting his cohosts and guests continue to make his points for him instead. That MLG senior VP guy was very level-headed, especially in comparison.

I didn't tune in in time for Spooky, but from the rest of it, all I can gather is that this was another instance of lecturing for the sake of lecturing with no concrete proposals on what can be done to move anything forward, as usual. I don't know why these people waste their breath on this subject without getting Capcom on board first, which is the only way anything of substance can ever happen in the first place.

I think the point of contention is that when MLG goes to Capcom for a Street Fighter 4 license, they get rejected. Allegedly the SRK Illuminati is what is keeping MLG from getting the license, therefore it makes more sense to talk/debate/rant at inkblot, Ponder, and Mr. Wizard then it is to go straight to Capcom.
