Eurogamer's 2014 Game of the Year is...

Mario Kart 8!

It's Mario Kart 8 that stands out above all those, though. It's tempting to think that it's earning its accolades thanks only to what's been a mediocre year for games; that it's being rewarded for not having a multi-gigabyte day one patch, for the fact its servers stood firm or for how it refused to mock its players with an infinite, relentless grind.

Mario Kart 8 deserves more than that, and in any year it'd surely be recognised for its excellence, and for its effortless engineering. You'll find that in the brilliantly supple drifting mechanics, in the new selection of weapons and items that restores a balance seemingly lost to the series for well over a decade or in the euphoric thrust of its live orchestrated soundtrack.

More simply, you'll find it in the half-drunken thrill of getting friends together to partake in the bustle of its multiplayer - how telling it is that in a year when the anonymous internet mobs turned so nasty we all discovered the pleasure of going offline and enjoying the company of familiars - and in enjoying an old classic restored and, perhaps, perfected.

For my money, Mario Kart 8 is the best game in the series since that Super Nintendo classic, and one of the greatest arcade racers of all time. It holds that knife-edge balance between luck and skill better than any Mario Kart since the first, and locks the player into the zone with an exquisite stack of boost tricks that give you something new to think about every second and a half. It's also an audiovisual wonder: the most beautiful game of the new hardware generation to date, a game that lights up your synapses as it laughs off the Wii U's horsepower deficit in a riot of colour, brilliant animation and blistering performance; a game that evokes the dazzling, long-lost wow factor of the arcade.

But the best thing about Mario Kart 8 is that it is defiantly old-school and thrillingly modern all at once. It incorporates some of the best features of contemporary social gaming without jumping on any bandwagons that might lead it astray. It offers depth and customisation and a long tail of unlocks, but it doesn't put grind before purity. Online, it's competitive but friendly, with excellent ranking and matchmaking, a level playing field and - something previously thought impossible - a charming lobby. It's a game you keep playing again and again and again because you're having fun, not because you're working towards your next meta-goal. It's even got an add-on that's worth buying.

WUT? God save us.

Why did you not write Mario Kart 8 in the thread title?

Also, as much as I like Ground Zeroes, it was too low on content to be eligible for a GOTY nomination. And don't get me started on Destiny.

That's... quite a terrible top ten, all things considered.
Then again, can't say I ever cared about these charts, so... Good for them for liking what they like, I guess.

Let me get it out of the way: Oh my god, no Tropical Freeze?

Well I'd be pretty surprised if it did turn up going by its unenthusiastic Eurogamer review.
Fortunately Mario Kart 8 earned points that DK lost for being the game that could feasibly save the Wii U to some extent and look at it now, GotY!

Nice to see Towerfall as a kinda unexpected ranking.

Nothing wrong with that opinion (Mariokart GOTY, and the whole list).

..But it also confirms that I might as well stay away from Eurogamer when it comes to news or articles somewhat suited to my interests. The GOTY list is like a bizarro-list seen from where I'm standing (except A:I)

I think it's weird that there is no Shadow of Mordor or Sunset Overdrive. Also Destiny #2 and no Far Cry 4, Titanfall, Advanced Warfare or Wolfenstein...
Seen worse lists though.

My overall GOTY would have to be Divinity: Original Sin but the game that I have put the most hours in this year is Destiny, hands down. I don't fault Eurogamer for putting it on their list. It may have its fair share of faults and flaws but it is also the most fun to play with friends online shooter that I have ever experienced. And that's worth a lot of points in my book.

MK8 is a worthy GOTY when it comes to local MP.

Its online code is great, but didn't hook me nearly as much as MP sessions I had playing the game with friends in the same room.

Destiny above Bayonetta 2?

Look. I understand how opinion and independent thought works.

But no. Anyway, all the GOTY lists this year are basically reminding me that this year hasn't exactly been stellar.

Except that it had to be patched several times because some key menu features were missing and the online modes had quite some problems early on.
What was missing at launch? I remember playing the game day one online and it was perfect, instant connection, no lag, perfect experience.

There was a common problem of everyone disconnecting if someone left the online room before choosing a map or some shit. And several ordinary menu features of MK7 were not present until later.

I have to say I'm quite surprised. Games like Mario Kart and Smash, despite being very well received series, rarely win GotY awards. It's usually just racing/fighting for them.

How is Danganronpa on NONE of this lists? Oh, right, Vita lulz.

You can't really say that it's because of it being on Vita. I mean this is a thread about a Wii U game winning GotY.
