Eurogamer's 2014 Game of the Year is...

The vibrant color, the unique identity of each track, the wide-camera showing off the incredible draw distance, the verticality of the tracks, the smooth-ass framerate, I've never played anything else like it.

Not to mention the obvious Nintendo nostalgia that comes along with it, that's big for me, but not for everyone. Seeing a lot of classic Nintendo stuff brought into the modern HD era blew my mind.
Sorry for the sarcasm the hell did you played until now? Tons of racing, even on ps3, overtake the graphic of MK8. Just fps it's flawless but draw distance it's not absolutely incredible. Prefer the style, well, it's another matter, but tech wise it's not exactly 'supernatural'.
Well no it isn't because like I said, it's an entirely different graphic/art style and without a doubt the best looking of that style. Name me one better looking cartoony/stylised racer.
It's dangerous use superlative for something of so subjective. But what you said it's different. Yeah it could be qualified how one of the most beautiful cartoonish racer. Not one of the most beautiful racer because here there are tons of games tech wise quite superior. Too much vague.

Mario Kart 8 is a nice game. I had tons of fun playing it online and with friends. But we're talking about a game that is only slightly different from Mario Kart 7, which was only slightly different from 6 other Mario Karts before it. It's an odd choice for GOTY. I would say the same about at least five other games on that list: fine games, but it seems like originality should count for more in these sorts of polls.

That's fine, agree to disagree. My gaming background is fairly comprehensive.

Like destiny, you're just totally not perceiving the vaunted (by eurogamer) "next gen gameplay" present within the game.

From a logical perspective that list does not compute

So we're just letting anything qualify now. Well, I nominate this for my GOTY then:

Now I'm hungry. Replace the ketchup witsome mustard or mayo though

Ground Zeroes was my favorite game, by far, but I'd say Mario Kart 8 is a pretty solid choice for Game of the Year! I'll have to try out the DLC one of these days.

The rhetoric of eurogamer about the next generation gameplay sometimes give him huge headaches. They disqualified games like Second Son and put in the top ten game like MK8 or Destiny for the sake of next gen gameplay. Next gen in what sense? That's very opinable their idea of next gen gameplay.

The Eurogamer person who wrote "Who needs games: PS4's first year" should check out half of their top 10 list being on PS4.

i disagree

as much as i liked mario kart 8. no way is it GOTY worthy.
during the summer drought i did play it but after that, i haven't really touched it. even got the dlc which i only played like once until it got boring again. I wish Mario kart had trophies like in smash bros or other stuff you can unlock to add replay value. Online in mk8 became kinda boring now too unless when i'm playing it with friends who don't really play mk8 anymore either.

That's... a very eccentric opinion.

No it's not, I'd wager many GAFfers hold that opinion. Heck, even Eurogamer called it the best looking next gen game. Obviously Driveclub is pushing much more effects that's impressive in its realism, but I prefer to look at the absolute joy inherent in Mario Kart too.

Every single online game ever made drops a player here or there. It happens.

MK8's online and single player were polished compared to some of the AAA games of this holiday season....and that was the point of the guy you quoted.

actually no, MK8's online service is the biggest POS I seen. I get connection errors a little here and there. The AAA games these holidays arent even close.

Nintendo is still terrible when it comes to online gaming.

It's a fun game, but by no means not GOTY material.
what why not its stellar. and they are right about the lobby being charming. literally everyone i showed that to laughed at its goofyness

Seriously? My syntax could sucks but try to say it's completely incomprehensible, seems so 'snobbish'. I'm not sure what tried to say in the last part but I'm just said it's not surely one of the best graphic seen in a racing. Aliasing it's atrocious for example.

Your English is fine mate. I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about the other posts directed towards you.

I always find it annoying to see people complain about English from non-native speakers. It isn't something I do as I'm a typical Brit who can only communicate in English - I'm useless abroad ;)

I agree. MK8 was not a game I was expecting to fall in love with. It doesn't seem like a revolution in the series. But it's just damn fun to play... it's perfectly executed.

Destiny at number 2? Oh boy. That game was top notch dog shit.

Shame Divinity didn't get a look in, poor bastards but out a great RPG and it ended up on maybe one list.

Tbh it's probably due to wifi

Tbh no problems with ethernet for me

I'm going to take a wild guess. Now this is kind of a crazy theory, but stay with me. I think...well...I think that maybe some of the guys at Eurogamer liked the game. Crazy, I know. My brain literally struggles to comprehend the concept that people can like things.

Hmmm...

We might have to fund research.

lol

Eurogamer being inconsistent? You don't say.

They have been particularly bad as of late. The negative articles about The Order and Infamous SS were just weird. As we all know Infamous SS was the only PS4/XB1 game that didn't have next gen gameplay to go with it's next gen visuals.

If I remember correctly Eurogamer's GOTY last year was Super Mario 3D World, right?? So cool! Wii U is killing it with top notch games and 2015 will be no exception. MK8 is the most fun I've had with a videogame in the last 5 years or so and the visuals still impress me even after more than 8 months after it was released (Dat F-Zero track is just hnnngggg <3)

That's... a very eccentric opinion. But tastes are tastes. I don't even discuss the quality of the game, Nintendo knows how to develop excellent game but graphically it's another story.

Not really, Driveclub has higher fidelity sure... still a rather boring game to watch and play

It does have a lot of polygons, it does have fancy lighthing, it does uses high res textures... but god it looks soul less, forgetable.

Yeah, looks cool for gifs but then loads of racing games look great.

Wreckfest is more interesting as something I'm looking forward to once it gets out of early access:

Lol..Driveclub is not boring looking or soulless. (whatever soulless is suppose to mean)
Also if you find it a boring game to play then you must hate most racers, Driveclub is in essence the spiritual successor of PGR as far as gameplay goes.

I see a trend here at Gaf to pick out tech heavy games which get called boring looking while on the other hand the cute bubbly nintendo and indie games happen to be full of this soul. Hell, some dude even said LBP3 looks boring and dull in that WiiU Graphics thread, when someone pointed out that colourful games with a similar approach to art exist on PS360/PS4bone..

Soul less: lack of personality

Not sure dude, taste and all but I don't consider spiritual successor of PGR a compliment these days, that game play is old and dated, still feels old and dated in driveclub, I didn't enjoy the core driving in that game.

Where is the rule claiming new and big change is needed to be goty ?
better(understand big change on some areas) can be ennemy of the good...and maybe this is the lesson this goty want to learn to some.

By that logic Mario Kart is dated too...even more so.
How does a driving game gets dated gameplay wise anyway? What's so dated about PGR ? It has weather, it has fictional and real tracks in both fictional and real locations, large line up of cars, cock pit view, Bikes mixed with cars, a variety of online game modes like Bulldog that are quite interesting and not just about racing (you don't usually see this in other racing games). I don't see what makes it dated gameplay wise.

Destiny would be shocking if you didn't visit the site daily since it came out, Fucking article nearly all the time about some irrelevant destiny "news".

Some designs endure the pass of time better than others? I still can play Super Mario Word and have fun with it, can't say the same about a lot of other snes games.

I don't think the notion that some design ideas or games age poorly is new nor revelatory.

that list is garbagio, Destiny at number 2? 2014 wasn't that great in terms of new releases, though Bayonetta 2 would've been a better choice. if it was up to me, i'd have to choose between TLOU remaster or GTAV remaster even though they originally came out last year.

Surprising. I feel like racing, puzzle, and fighting games have an unfair disadvantage in GOTY awards. It's like "we recognize that thing you do over there is nice, but we'll award it to a third person action/RPG, open world, or FPS for the real thing."

Really tired of people who don't know shit about cars spewing this trash about realistic racers all the time.

There's a hell of a lot more soul exuding from the painstakingly detailed models and performance characteristics of the cars in these games than you'll find in any flashy arcade racer.

Are you just yelling to yell? What does what he said have anything to do with realistic racers?
