Evolution 2016 lineup revealed, includes Pokken, doesn't include Street Fighter IV

I'm surprised they dropped USFIV, figured it deserves at least one more EVO.

And two Smash games again? Ugh. This better be last fucking year for that shit.

If you stand outside the convention center with a straw broom, I'm sure you'll shoo a few would-be fans away from entering, ensuring fewer numbers for the tally at the end of the day.

If Street Fighter can't get two games at EVO, neither should Smash Brothers.

Although I would rather have two Smash games than Pokken. Hell Dong Dong Never Dies would be a better option.

Smash bros has very little overlap between the two games, and both are huge. The same would not happen with SF

I guess my bitterness just stems from yet another perfectly good proven game dying for no real logical reason other than "hurr durr, new thing is here." I was just as bothered when tournaments and players alike happily abandoned 3rd Strike the moment SF4 dropped.

There will almost certainly be a side tournament for SF4 at EVO, but having it as a main game when 90% of the 2015 SF4 players will not be actively practicing it is a terrible idea. Everyone forgets how awful 2009 3S finals were (mainly because everyone slept in to watch the game that actually mattered).

Have a side tournament for people who want to play it and legitimately like it, don't drag it out on the main screen to watch people play worse than they have for the last 5 years, it'll kill the game even faster.

I think all me and the wife will play is Tekken 7 there and watch the tourney. Being this our first EVO, how does it work with setups for casual play? Are they time limited? How many stations do they normally have set up? And did they have a way of playing on a control for Tekken 7?

Typically those who play Smash 4 don't play Melee and vice versa. With SF4 and 5 you'd be catering to the same fanbase twice.

Just to be fair, 3S was 9 years old, with no updates and no support from Capcom till SF4 dropped.

When was the last time Nintendo dropped a big update or hosted a huge Melee tournament, again? I think it's commendable that Melee kept their game alive while Smash 4's community it's own thing, and it's a shame the SF community doesn't have even a semblance of that dedication or loyalty, because while I'm looking forward to 5, 3S and USF4 were damn fine in their own unique ways and it's a shame we're going to lose out on that.

Smash bros 4 and melee communities are very different, i dont think those are comparable situations

The PAL release of Melee.

So did the EVO organizers decide to drop USFIV? Or did Capcom push for SFV only? They are a sponsor right? I legitimately have no idea how this event works.

Hopefully they were smart enough to realize a few facts:

the vast majority of viewers would tune out or complain during the USF4 streams.

the vast majority of players would put their training time and effort into SF5, and either not enter or pay a lot less attention during USF4.

It would be better to showcase a different game since SF5 already is sucking all the air out of the room.

I wonder if Melee brings home the bacon for sponsors, e.g. can Madcatz sell new GC controllers.

Unless they use the exact official molds, no Melee player would bite due to muscle memory and all.

And I don't if MC could do that unless they get permission from Nintendo, who is pretty stingy about stuff like this.

I can't imagine any top player not entering SFV

Thats not what I said. Other guy said every top player will step away from USF4 when SF5 is released, pretty far-fetched to say every player.
Last year there was over 2000 entrants for USF4, I bet at least 1500 (if not more) knew they were never going to win it or even make top 8, but they just entered for the enjoyment of a tournament. I bet those 1500 would enter this year had it remained at EVO, I bet Pokken doesnt even get 1000 entries lol
Anyways rant over, RIP SF4. Im sure the smaller events will still hold it

Melee brings in bigger stream numbers and a more active community than Tekken or any of the anime games. It's there on merit.

I don't really like the game and I fucking hate tuning in on schedule to watch the next game on schedule, only to have to wait through another hour of Melee, but there's personal distaste and there's logic.

Melee logically belongs. It will probably belong in 5 years from now.

And probably those 1500 entrants would prefer to enter SF V this year instead of SF IV.

If Melee ceased to exist, the community would probably just dissolve rather than migrate. Most Melee players don't like Smash 4, to put it mildly. There are some exceptions of those who play both, but they're very few.

Ill play PM, a dying mod with 100 viewers at weeklies over Sm4sh. So glad Melee took Sunday spot over 4 again.

The big finals being held at Mandalay Bay is the biggest news out of this for me. That's going to be super hype for both the viewers and the contestants involved.

I had a sinking feeling that USFIV was going to the wayside in favor of SFV. Quite frankly after both last year's EVO top 8 and the closure at Capcom Cup there really is no better note to go out on for that game. It was the perfect swan song for it.

John Choi and Alex Valle hated 3S.

ST players hated 3S like 3S players hated SF4. I'm sure some SF4 players will dislike SF5, but they will about as relevant as all the dissenters who pre-dated them: Not at all.

There was never a threat that people wouldn't migrate from 4 to 5. We've been there, done that. It's had it's day, and now it's time to be relegated.

3S and ST are quite a bit different from IV and V, but you don't see those games at EVO anymore. Granted if a significant amount of people still played those it would be a different story.

Well, technically they did a lot for G3 for all of Smash, not just Sm4sh. That event had Smash 64, Melee, and Sm4sh all getting dedicated streams and finals, and the backend was heavily supported by Nintendo. And Melee still got the highest billing, but all games shared the big finals.

Which doesn't change the fact that the communities remained largely the same people, which is not at all the case with Smash

If USFIV fans want to do something about it, do what the Melee community did--loyally support your game for years even when you're not getting fight money or PR shine.

Create your own tournaments.

That's really your only option honestly.

Nintendo tolerates Melee because the fanbase is so dedicated and rabid. Capcom would probably do the same if USFIV had such cachet.

We'll see.

EVO is great, but it should not be the basis for your community. If the community is interested and strong enough, the game will continue to live on.

Exactly. Support your community, attend your locals, help newer players.

No I think Street fighter 4 will have a pull if it was in Evo regardless of the duplication of player base. They could've made it a Saturday night primetime final a long with Smash 4.

Street fighter 4 not being in has nothing to do with other fighting games as it still still more popular than the majority of them. Street fighter 4 isn't in because of Street fighter 5, it's that simple.

Part of this is marketing, Capcom and Sony are also trying to sell Street Fighter 5. Street Fighter 5 will still sell regardless but they want to make it so that if people were to buy a street fighter game in 2016 it would be 5. They want the game to grow as mush as possible and don't want to have a split because people prefer Street Fighter 4 over 5. They are really trying to push the game heavy which is why It wont appear in the majority of Capcom sponsored majors/events

Both venues have loads of free parking. Or you know, get some needed exercise after Friday/Saturday.

...

You have never been to Vegas?

That is a 1hr and 22min walk from one to the other. (4.25 mile walk) IN JULY in Vegas? what the hell are you thinking?

Cabs sure, people can do that. But w/o a home hotel (most will have to probably do Westgate which is terribad since it is next door to the Convention Center).. it will mean some cab fares for quite a bunch of people.

Parking makes sense for those who drive in which is not many for EVO unless you live in Nor Cal or So Cal.

EVO is all about the present, it makes sense to kill USFIV. There's never room for more than 2 Street Fighter games at one EVO tournament.

Of course it is. But it can also have a repercussion of pissing your community. Hiding SF4 under a rug shows insecurity in Capcom's and Sony's part.

Did you guys do a census.

Last EVO there were around 600 players who entered both Smash games. Each one individually had over 1800 players though, so for every player playing both games, each game had 2 only playing that game. That means around 4 out of 5 smash players only played one or the other

Agreed. People are taking it out on the wrong things though. It's not other games that are at fault, it's purely Capcom. The game could be there if they wanted it there and Pokken could be out. I'd rather watch all those game than pokken personally

Last EVO didn't they say that it was going to be the big farewell to Street Fighter 4? It definitely felt like one as everyone was pushing themselves to the hardest.

Makes sense that Street Fighter 5 is now.
