Face-Off: Fallout 4 - Digital Foundry

I just edited the OP to give some context to the GIF that's being quoted everywhere regarding the PC vs Console difference, and emphasized that it's regarding the LOD.

From a distance like that, obviously, a lot is cut away on PS4 - but it's all there on the ground level. That's just the most extreme case of LODs at play.

Thanks. That's the clarification I was waiting for.

Not to project or anything, (and because of the countless times I've missed out on sarcasm on the internet), this isn't sarcasm right? :P

No problem if so! :)

I don't think it's bad to leave high quality assets at distance for powerful PC's only, at least the low quality distance models are casting a shadow.

Presumably, the windows and dressings are not just higher quality swappins of LOds, but separately drawn geometry entities. Probably part of some modular asset design they have.

I do not think consoles have problems displaying high quality geometry, rather with drawing in separate objects.

This game looks awful on all platforms. Really pathetic offering, and I wouldn't be at all happy about that PC version. If anything, I would have expected much more out of that version at least. Bethesda has reached new heights of incompetence here and should be taken to task in the same way Ubisoft is.

Can hdd stutter be patched on XOne?

Sounds like other than that this is the definitive console version.

Also how do I install games to external? Is that official external drive I see at Gamestop a good solution?

CPU bound games can increase GPU effects without suffering fps in most cases. That is literally what CPU bound means.

I would definitely agree here, but there are GPU related drops (alpha effects) on the PS4 even. Which is odd to say the least, and unexpected.

Who knows, maybe games on PS4 that hit CPU to RAM bandwidth hard (as the PC version of this game shows) suffer from disproportionately reduced GPU to RAM bandwidth like that one slide points out.

Disappointing frame rates on consoles.

How is it possible that the Xbox One and PS4 perform the same when the PS4 is a lot more powerful. It sucks.
I'm not going to support a dev that does this.

Is PS4 really a lot more powerful than X1? I thought it was only slightly more powerful? if that is the case, the multiplatform games are rather disappointing then considering that the majority of them are really close in most categories.

I think Fallout 4 is one of the best looking open world games in terms of enviroment.

I can live with the fugly charcter models, the textures that are non-existant at times, the terrible terrible animations and even the frame rate drops (which while noticeable, don't actually bother me too much)

What is fucking terrible in this damn game is all the little issues: the captions that can't keep up or disappear or get stuck on one line so I can't see the speech options. The weird glitching out through floors and shit by NPCs, commanding Nick to hack a terminal 10 times to see him not be able to navigate around a small object to get TO the terminal, my gun disappearing, having the "NOW CONNECT SOMETHING TO POWER!" box appear forever despite me having connected shit to power.

Most are just annoying but stuff like the captions being fucked are hurting my game experience a lot.

The PS4 has 40% more stream processors, 100% more ROPs, 40% more texture mapping units, and it's main memory is over 100GB/s faster. The Xbone's ESRAM makes the bandwidth comparison murkier, but the GPU advantage is clear as day and significant.

Edit: Forgot to mention it also has a significant GPU compute advantage, too.

It's a lot more than just shadows, but that's what draws the eye initially. There are so many ground level things missing, but up close they've got to be in, right? That has to just be a draw distance thing.

Of course it's draw distance. PC's are always better than consoles at this. Though i wouldn't put it pass Bethesda to have actual missing assets, even up close.

You would think there was some genuine generation hardware gap between PS4 and Xbox with some of these comments. How much better did you honestly expect it to be?

Apologises if I'm wrong but isn't the GPU better on Ps4 and CPU better on Xbox?

It's not a generation ahead no, but extra resources, big or not, would obviously be beneficial to development. The GPU difference is much greater than the CPU difference. The XB1's CPU speed almost amounts to nothing.

1.84TF GPU 18 CUs
1152 Shaders
72 Texture units
32 ROPS
8 ACE/64 queues

Sorry to bring this usual list up, but looks to me that Bethesda didn't take advantage of what was available to them. The PS4 version is an exact match of the XB1, with XB1 doing better in some areas even. That shouldn't be.

why console graphical parity? :(

When they said both versions will be 1080p i figured XB1 was being developed on first (usual Bethesda fashion like last gen), anything XB1 can do PS4 should able to do more of. More so at 1080p. So whatever limitations happened to XB1 at 1080p PS4 unfortunately has to deal with too.

Just saying that the PS4 can do pretty nice things in the right hands. Bethesda's engine is terrible.

Terrible example. A scripted sequence from a linear game with hardly any player interactivity versus a sandbox open world game. Seriously, Uncharted is nothing like Fallout.

I assume draw distance is single-threaded a la Dying Light, in which case there's not a lot that the PS4's superior GPU can actually offer in practice given asset quality is identical across all three platforms.

Any chance both consoles are cpu limited in this game?

Regardless.. Naughty Dog could do an open world game like Fallout that would shit on Fallout from a graphical perspective.

F4 looks like trash on those consoles.

True, but let's be honest here. Even in a linear, scripted game, there's no way Bethesda could Gamebryo something that looks anywhere near that good or performs that well. There's absolutely no evidence that being an open world game somehow holds back whatever technical wizardry Bethesda might have. The only evidence we have is of their logic-defying technical incompetence across many games and many platforms.

This generation they've had no PPC or Cell to fight with, no optional hard drives to worry about, and a shitload more memory to work with, yet they're still producing the same garbage. It's inexcusable.

Oh, I'm not defending Bethesda's technical incompetence in the slightest. I just find Uncharted gifs in a Fallout 4 thread a bit daft.

Also keep in mind, the PS4 SDK also has a middleware solution for quick-and-dirty ports of DirectX based games. Said solution of course brings with it a performance cost.

Scripted event from a game that would shock nobody if it got downgraded before release.

I think I've seen you post something like this before lol; I'm not sure if you're familiar with Naughty Dog's previous games, but they're not one to downgrade visuals of their games before release

You're also forgetting that GIF you're on about was running on PS4 hardware in real time...it's not like Watch Dogs which was running on a super powerful PC or 'target' specs and not the actual consoles themselves.

People seem to forget just how bad Bethesda is. Even the PC version of Skyrim was poorly programmed.

Quote from the quoted forum post, regarding multithreading:
I guess I don't have to mention how bad the threading is; this isn't trivial to fix though. Just sad that it's almost 2012 and this thing can't even properly use two threads. Besides all the other obvious flaws, this is the main reason why the game is so strongly limited by the CPU. Single-core speed didn't grow nearly as much as the number of cores did. Everyone knew it 10 years ago, but back then they could still just wait for the hardware to provide the additional power needed to run the sloppy code - this trick doesn't work anymore.

Yeah, keeping blaming console CPUs for this.

Watch Dogs was demoed on PC hardware said to be "close" to console since 2013. The original demo was apparently running on a single 680.

Why are you using that as an example?

This game is very well multi-threaded on PC, unlike skyrim.

Indeed, Skyrim was DX9 so mostly two cores but Fallout does make use of much more :

Still, it is very cpu bound even on PC when settings are pushed.

Oh the frame rate drops are so fucking bad on the PS4. This is barely playable. I hope things get better after the opening sequences.

During one hour of gameplay, I experienced the character getting stuck walking in place while trying to hack a terminal and later on the character being teleported skyhigh for no reason and then falling to my death.

Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.

This is awful. The Playstation 4 is very easy to develop for. How come we get this dreadful mess?

Because 12 million shipped gives them no pressure to change.

Just stick to games with linear scripted sequences with minor interactivity and you should be pretty happy, then.

Because gosh forbid people ask for both in gaming.

And that was not the point of his gif. The point was that it can do pretty things, and it is not the dog shit GPU compared to PC's like that narrative that pops up sometimes.

Fallout should NOT be a fucking measurement of GPU prowess, lol. The fact that some PC gamers are spinning that narrative is very troubling.

Going to be doing exactly what I've done with Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas - wait a year for the inevitable GOTY Edition, mods, modded patches and official patches.

Always better off getting the PC SKU of these sort of games and waiting a while before you buy it.

I should be getting either Oculus Rift or HTC Vive around this time next year so even if the GOTY Edition isn't available I can still play both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas using the same engine as Fallout New Vegas in VR-O-Vision by downloading the The Two Wastelands mod until they decide to release it. TTW is supposed to be the dog's bollocks in VR!!!

How people cannot see any frame drops in this game is beyond me. Just recorded this example on my PS4.

https://youtu.be/6-hnzyhNndk

As you can see, it's a small room with nothing going on but that small fire. The visuals are literally nothing that I would not have expected to see in a PS360 game. How this game manages to maintain its frame rate is just beyond me.

I don't speak for anyone else but I wouldn't be shocked at all if Uncharted 4 got a downgrade. Recurring theme this gen.

You think so, huh? I wonder why they don't, then.

I think Horizon: Zero Dawn is a much better comparison to Fallout 4. Not sure why UC4 was the comparison chosen.

That said, the art-style is too wildly different for me to have compared the two.

But F4 is an ugly game. And it runs like ass.
