Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

Yep. Hope this silences those who live in a lala land where FB gave OR money and stand back and do nothing else lol
Why does one thing have to take from the other? The mobile phone gaming platform has F2P Bullshit and amazing games, isn't it possible that Occulus Rift will too?

How is this even possible?

You can't be courtside at a game, because you would have to be controlling a real life camera sitting in a seat...in real time.

You can't sit in a classroom for the same reason.

You can't consult with a doctor for the same reason.

What fairy tale world is this where you can interact with people in real time using the Rift the way it was intended? You could put them on, but it would just be a normal TV.

Why you need to controll a camera? You stream the whole 180-360degree of video to your headset, it needs alot faster internet but it would work. Only positional tracking will be hard to do.

Notch said:
And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.

This is really important. A lot of people who backed this under the pretense of "by gamers for gamers" must be feeling betrayed and really pissed off right now.

Exactly. Some people aren't thinking clearly on this. Do they really believe that it would benefit Facebook to suspend Oculus's gaming plans?

Oculus have always said that the RIft and VR in general is a lot bigger than just gaming, so Facebook recognizing the same thing isn't surprising. That said, both Oculus and Facebook know that gaming is going to be one of the main impetuses in getting the Rift into more people's homes.
This. This was my first thought. I always thought OR had way more interesting and compelling applications than being confined to gaming. I really don't understand why people are getting up in arms, literally cancelling preorders. This deal can only make OR better

Yeah acquisitions don't change anything...
In 3 years top, OR will be a former of its shelf.

You know what's better than two billion? Ten billion or more. Imagine having the option to sell Facebook for 2 billion before it really catches fire. You'd sell the golden goose for what amounts to petty cash in the tech world? Luckey got played by the VCs that invested in Oculus. One of them sits on Facebook's board. Textbook.

I totally get your point but no human needs 1 billion dollars or more. Would it be nice? Of course. But I wouldn't be crying if I only had 2 billion dollars.

just read that the deal...facebook shares? that kinda changes things. sell, sell! i wonder what the terms of it exactly were...

Yeah they called up Facebook last week and asked to buy them. They did the paperwork in a couple days, because that's how long something like this takes.

DK2 is also the ultimate proof of the long con.

Trick people into ordering more, then closing shop a week later. BRILLIANT.

As much as I hate facebook, I'm on the Wait&see team

How is this even possible?

You can't be courtside at a game, because you would have to be controlling a real life camera sitting in a seat...in real time.
You can't move around in your seat (ideally) in real life, either. Imagine one courtside seat with a 360-degree panoramic view, which you can scroll through in real time. I think it's very easy to see how you use Oculus to experience real-life events.

Wow. So oculus that will now be getting millions of R&D Money thrown at them daily to get through the hard challenges ahead quicker now than ever is a bad thing? Wtf people...

Not sure what you mean here to be honest. It's still the same product in this case. Not sure what my comment about FB being in the driving seat going forward has to do with your comment.

What he said may have had a tone that you may not have liked, but the fact that the PS4 is what's running Morpheus instead of the PS5 means the experience will be compromised in comparison (just as its lower quality output of the device itself, judging by the hands on).

I wasn't arguing against PC's and Occulus having more potential in regards to power etc. But acting so bitter about it is just juvenile.

Best case scenario Mark Z recently watched Summer Wars and decided he wanted to make it a reality. Worst case... I dunno.

Is this where I can admit I liked Myspace more than Facebook?

I didn't switch over until like late 2005 when all of my friends had dropped their myspace pages.

I'm off neogaf for 3 hours and there is a ~3000 post thread that I missed.

On topic, What. The. Fuck?

Oculus went from an awesome peripheral to a platform. Along with the global payment system and first party support will now likely come provisions and provisos that create problems for those planning to bring software to the device. My guess is there will be lost content that would've been amazing. C'est la vie

edit - Just hope Valve and OR can still play nice

I wonder how this affects Sony, it validates their VR plans and shows that big companies are willing to invest in the market. Patent wars incoming...

Facebook... we can't catch a break.

Occulus is dead. (Given Zuckerbergs stated plans with it)

Playstation VR ain't going anywhere.

VR is dead, just like it was dead before.

Soooo much FB hate. The largest Facebook acquisitons by many orders of magnitude: Instagram and Whatsapp. Both independent and still running. Facebook is already a big hardware company. Look up OpenCompute.

The consumer version of the Oculus Rift will release. It will be amazing. It will be free and open to develop for. And Notch will be seen as a loud complainer trying to be edgy.

Jesus man, they were just examples. Don't treat them as literally the only things that Oculus will do in the future. lol

The problem is, that OR was initially sold as, and I quote their KS page, 'a new virtual reality (VR) headset designed specifically for video games', which will now serve other purposes for the benefit of Facebook, thus the product has changed.
It might not be evident straight away, and OR may deliver on some promises, but to not consider that the acquisition by Facebook creates a very different outlook for the technology is pretty naive. OR will be lead by Facebook.

Wow. So oculus that will now be getting millions of R&D Money thrown at them daily to get through the hard challenges ahead quicker now than ever is a bad thing? Wtf people...

Remember, Facebook is the devil and has never done anything but evil. However, Sony exclusively has the consumer's interest in mind, and is the secondcoming of gaming VR.

Seriously, it's just people who are mixing up Facebook as a service, and Facebook as a company. Oculus is owned by Facebook as a company. They're using FB as a source for R&D and captial.

If Sony make Morpheus PC-ready, Sony instantly devalues Facebook's purchase, and pulls out ahead of every other competitor by a good couple of years. And they got there, by focusing on gaming.
How? Sony making their device PC compatible won't suddenly stop them from being anchored to an unchanging, outdated HW platform. This greatly limits their opportunities for continuous technological refinement.

Personally, I see some Chinese or Korean company picking up the slack in the 2016-2018 timeframe.

Wrong. Zuckerberg's suggestions sound fucking lame. Oculus is great tech, but if that's the best Facebook can think of we're fucked.

Oculus rift is not a software/game product. Is a VR piece of hardware. If facebook need an income, they need to push development to create a perfect VR hardware. More important the perfection and user friendly part if a big new audience are no gamer people.

Facebook can make a lot of not interesting VR apps, but people that buy rift don't need to use them.

Big games developers surely will be happy with rift sales number and will invest in better and expensives games.

So this is good news. Facebook needs a perfect VR hardware into the market. Gamers will benefit that hardware.

Pixar had nothing to do with Planes and The Incredibles 2 is bringing Brad Bird back which is a big win.
