Fan made Shenmue HD project

There was (for a Sega game) a lot of demand for a NiGHTS sequel for quite a while, the demand was Shenmue-esque. The PS2 remake sated some of that, and Journey into Dreams was hyped quite a bit after it was announced, but after JoD came out, any NiGHTS demand kind of died off, I guess. Between those two, I guess there wasn't much demand for a NiGHTS HD.

I'm much more surprised that Daytona USA HD didn't do better, millions of people must have played it and had fond memories of it. And yet...
Honestly, I know a lot of people who loved playing Daytona USA back in the day (some still play when they find a cab), but none of them know that the game had a HD remake.

I hate hearing things like this...They did an excellent job on the HD version of Daytona USA. The only thing that let the game down was the online lobby system.

Seems like they need to do a little more marketing...most likely a release for PC would have helped.

Sega aren't too bad for shutting down fan projects really. The Streets of Rage Remake seems to have been an exception, and IIRC that could have been precipitated by their taking of donations, something that is terribly unwise for any IP infringing fan project.

Also they waited until that was out in the wild and thus anyone who wants it can get it now anyway. The remake was around in various versions for many years before that final release.

Have they ever sent a shutdown notice to any of the millions of Sonic fan games around?

Sega have needed a better marketing department in the west since the days of the Saturn. If they can afford one is another question...

Wow, if the arcade was like that in the original no one would have progressed through the story haha. It's really OTT, even has games like Magical Taluluto-kun for some reason? Super impressive though, appears to be pre-rendered CGI rather than an in-game engine, unless it;s something like Unity?

It also contains games way too new for the time Shenmue is set. But then the actual game had a Sega Saturn hidden in a cupboard in it anyway.

Mind you that arcade makes me want to have a Shenmue arcade emulation frontend.

So where does this project ultimately go? Just re-creating scenes from ShenMue 1 or will the creator go to Sega and ask permission for a full-blown re-boot?

Probably not much further than it currently is now. I can see the environments getting remade but the actual scripting, NPCs, fighting and story elements implemented will be a rather large task!

What's the legal situation if the fan remake hired more people and went to crowd funding to fund this "fan version?" As long as they don't earn money for selling the game and it's a fan game, there shouldn't be an issue, right? Is this greyer than perceived?

i keep looking at this & trying to not hype myself up on what might just be proof-of-concept shots

ehhh i'm one of the bigger shenmoo fans but i'd be pretty wary of a KS/etc for such efforts, shit could get shut down with a quickness

Looks great. If Sega weren't fools with this IP they would hire these guys to finish a remake. If Sega do a remake it is highly unlikely to look this good.

SEGA are only good at destroying their franchises. They should just sell or give away Shenmue, Skies, Valkyria chronicles, Jet set radio and Streets of rage, etc etc.

Sorry to Bump this, but just wanted to add the progress that NoconKid has made with the mod. Shenmue HD Dobuita - at night, whilst raining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpzRBC5zvaI
Seriously, this is ONE guy. Why can'y Sega at least get a couple of people to work with him, pay the guy a small wage and bring this to fruition?

Amazing.

What engine is being used for this? Heard that part of the problem of re-releasing A port was because there were some legal issues with using the original engine. Well they could use this one instead?

Is Sega even aware of this man's amazing work?

This is being done in Unreal engine.

I'm guessing it would be easier to re-do everything themselves than to figure out if they can use what he did, how to pay him or if the work he did was good enough...?

Well my bump was mainly to say that they are both created with the same engine so it should be quite easy to port assets.
