Fast company: Will Wii U Join The Gaming Graveyard?

Well it has no 3rd party support, Nintendo doesn't seem to be in a hurry to release games for it and more powerful consoles are coming this year.

As of right now it looks doomed than not doomed.

Why won't we wait until after the 3rd party Nintendo Direct that is coming in the next months before we say it has no third party support (of course the support is weak, but we don't know what (WiiU exclusive) collaborations of Nintendo and 3rd party developers are in the works)

Nope.

It's doing better than the GC afaik, and that little thing didn't put Nintendo to death.

Hmm.

In the same period that the GC sold 3.80 million at launch (Japan + the Americas only), the Wii U is projected to sell 4 million (worldwide).

The Wii U is doing a bit better (4 million in 3 months...the GC was available in Japan, 6 months in one territory), but that's not saying much.

Lol. Click bait. It wont. Nintendo franchises alone will assure a decent critical mass.

These people never learn not to underestimate Nintendo do they?

I don't understand why people want Nintendo, Sony, and/or Microsoft.

It's like when system doesn't do amazingly well it's doomed forever.

Humans are tribal, even with their video games it would seen. So pick your favorite console and wear it's colored jacket and go stab some people wearing the wrong colors.

Way too early to be making these types of articles. Even if the Wii-U sells half as many units as the Wii, it could still be considered a success for Nintendo.

Pretty optimistic estimate. I think somewhere between Gamecube and N64 is a tad more likely.

An unknown website who just published such a shocking and controversial article insinuating that a newly released console from a well known and loved company will die prematurely.

They are actually a pretty respected magazine / website following the start up / tech world. Never knew they covered anything about video games really, though.

Gamecube didn't doom Nintendo, I find it hard to believe Wii U can. (I do think Nintendo can barely survive without GBA)

Let's think best case / worst case scenario here if the Wii U fails:

Best case scenario: Iwata gets fired, Wii U prompts a successor that's radically different (think Wii)

Most probable scenario: Iwata gets fired, Nintendo abandons console / handheld segregation and focuses on only one handheld / console hybrid.

Worst case scenario: Iwata gets fired, the Wii U is Nintendo's Dreamcast and Nintendo becomes a third-party publisher

Nintendo is not exiting the video game business this gen no matter what happens. Their IPs are just too damn lucrative.

Yeah those 150 million + costumers that bought a PS3/360 just disappeared over night and were replaced by smartphone/tablet/F2P zombies.
Everybody should stop making consoles and games.

Zombies? The hell dude? Smartphones and tablets are a bigger and bigger factor, growing faster and faster. Lets wait and see ;)

This is what think, and it may be totally wrong:
The wii was a huge success, no doubt about it. Why? casual market met gamming for the first time, so there was a boom.
Later, sales started to decline. why? gamming was not new anymore and got out out of fashion. releasing a new console will not do the trick. Why should this casual market get one? They don't care about games anymore.
I' m not stating that the wii u is a foop,i'm just saying that if someone was expecting a wii phenomenon again, it was wrong.
This time around, xbox 720 and ps4 will take the biggest market share.

Willing to eat crow if it
inevitably
outsells the N64 and GCN instead of disappearing into the shadows until the next generation comes along and we repeat this ad nauseum?

Another day, another Nintendo is doomed article...not surprised.
Give it at least one more holiday season before we declare doom and gloom. Nintendo did not survive this wild industry for 30 years by luck.

Is that what we do now? Just make up non-existent future PR events to explain away Nintendo's shortcomings?

So Iwata is fired no matter what happens?

The Wii U has two clear cut problems:

a) It's too expensive for the mass market
and
b) it lacks available games both for the mainstream market but also for the core audience. Nintendoland isn't a revolutionary game the masses have to play whatever the price and core gamers feel like they've played NSMBU already.

With this in mind, I can't understand talking about the Wii U as a console mysteriously not selling well with a Nintendo that won't be able to do anything at all.

I´m willing to bet my account that it won´t outsell the N64. ;-)

Soooo...wait till E3?

well that was....fast?

Way way too early for all these doom and gloom really. It's not doing too hot yes, but the system is just starting out

The Wii U is selling pretty much in the average range right now. Its not the Wii and quite frankly no one will likely ever be the Wii again.

If we are going to be comparing launches forever more to the Wii then I expect lots of Durange and Orbis are dead articles in the future but they of course wont show up because will make excuses for why its different.

The Wii has totally fucked up expectations in this industry on what is normal

What qualifies as a success? I would say it is about 60-70 million lifetime sales while managing to make some decent profits. So they need to sell about 10-12 million per year without steep price drops.

If Durango and Orbis don't sell like diner hotcakes, GAF will crash from the meltdowns.

Wii U will do better (sensibly much better for most cases) than any videogame system listed in that article gallery.

However Doom
64
is best Doom.

I've got a WiiU but I think it's going to be a legendary flop. I've no doubt about it.
