Fast company: Will Wii U Join The Gaming Graveyard?

Dreamcast didn't even off itself. Sega's previous, actual failures like CD, 32X, Saturn-era management caught up with them.

But no: Either it seems the population of this forum consists mostly of PC, PS3/Xbox fanboys, so that a healthy degree of objetivism is hardly possible, or people have become so obsessed with "gaming news" on a daily basis that they kind of lost their ablity to think mid - to long term.

oh shit

Did people actually read the article (it's quite short) or just instantly go into defense mode? The title even says "Will Wii U". It's a projection, not a death certificate. And so no, it's not too early. Sales wise Wii U got off to a solid start, but if Nintendo isn't looking forward a year+ from now themselves and aren't worried about what lies ahead, then what this article suggests may come to pass.

Did you see the Nintendo Direct a week or so ago? They clearly have shit planned for this year and undoubtedly the next.

Unfortunately that's not how the gaming journalism nor GAF works.

I didn't expect much from the first, but one has to be disappointed about GAF. I actually thought this was a place with highly knowledgable resonable people about all things gaming, that don't jump to conclusions easily and actually base their console opinions on the last 25 years of console gaming and the lessons/information we have learned.

I hope that will change, though, once more games come out, so that people can talk about what actually should matter to any true gamer: games.

All this doom and gloom and hardware-focused discussion on this site has become so annoying, it's hardly bearable.
damn son

I love the "its only been out two weeks", "theres no advertising", "what about Walmart" excuses.
Fact is this e3 the wiiU will be entering its third(yes that's right) year of public existence. Nintendo has had plenty of time to build/buy third party support and create an image for the system so that everyone would know what It is. Instead they have failed completely and squandered the year head start. Is the system doomed? Possibly. Nintendo could still save it but the challenge is going to be a lot more extreme going forward especially with next gen consoles looming.

E3 is going to be very telling. If they still dont have an idea what they want the wiiu to be and rely mainly on their franchises and tossing Mario into everything I would be very worried.

Haha, way too hasty on Fast Company's part.

Just because the ballerina failed to perfectly execute the latest pirouette doesn't mean she wiped out and cracked her skull. Yet.

There's no anti-nintendo bias or anything man.

From the short time I have been on GAF I can tell you that this is simply not true.
Companies get shit on equally.

M$, Vita Shit, Wii U doom, Cacpom, iOSquare. Etc.

This is kind of a dumb post to make since most of the people posting in this thread agree it is still to soon to truly call it doomed anyway.

Why can't we all just get along :c

That's what I found pretty funny.

Wii U will be fine even if all players get are first party Nintendo games.
Seriously, lets assume that WiiU isn't the mega hit that the Wii was - if what we have is another Gamecube on our hands, then thank fuck for that cos i absolutely loved that little machine and the amazing gaming gems it had to offer....far moreso than the Wii might I add.

Where where the vita doom articles? I don't remember any and there is tons of data to actually support one.

Is it that the press don't care? Is it just more interesting to see Nintendo fail?

people have been saying nintendo is doomed for ages and I guess they are just eager to see the day after getting it so wrong for so long.

Well, here is the difference. For example, prior to shitting about the Vita, so many people were certain it would be a huge success and beat the 3DS. Based on what? They saw the unveil and sony flashing out their hardware dick and many were starring at it like they had never seen something like that before: "My god... so powerful...". Hence, they were convinced Vita = huge success.
Was it right? No, WRONG!
(minority= the ones that voiced their concern about sony competing with their own ps3 audience and failing to make it attractive to those and core/graphic enthusiasts alike)

3DS is doomed? Was it right? No, WRONG!

Wii doomed? Was it right? No, WRONG!

PS3/360 becoming the best selling consoles? No, WRONG!

I mean, if you take the entirety of GAF and how many times they were right based on objetive, well-thought out predictions and analysis, it's pretty embarrasing. I don't want to shit on anyone, but hold you act together people!

If you want to keep this site a quality place for gamers, and not a shithole of fanboyism, just at least try to think twice before you post.

Dear Miyamoto, I would hate that. If it's going to resemble anything, I hope it's the Wii because at least when third parties tried, we got awesome and unique games like Trauma Team. Also, the Wii had motherfucking Sin and Punishment: Star Successor! :P

I would add this though: GAF, and by extension, the gaming internet, shit on everything equally. The way in which they shit on each given thing isn't necessarily the same, though.

In Nintendo's case, it's perpetual doom and nothing but how perpetually uncool Nintendo is for not "growing up" and making "real games" - aka, games that appeal to an ever-churning demographic of 20-30 year old males. Nintendo is trolled for always being out of step with what a certain demographic sees as "real gaming", and it has always been this way including back to the days of the NES. Nintendo fans who were children when they had their Nintendo console of choice simply didn't realize it.

In that sense, it can get old, because much of the time the brand of disdain directed at Nintendo characterizes them as shit because they don't make games explicitly for a single audience that isn't really their primary audience (and never has been). So people get frustrated - asking a legitimate question: why does every company have to be the same, make the same games, aimed at the same people. One might even say some act entitled, to use that dirty word.

It becomes difficult at times, to separate legitimate criticism of Nintendo from the usual knee-jerk Nintendo-sucks-because-X memes and bandwagon jumping commentary. Having said that, it is true of any entity that has hate directed at it. Yes, Sony gets hate, Microsoft gets hate, Capcom, etc.

Technically, there is anti-bias from plenty of people - enough of it so that every company and every product has someone who shits on it for irrational reasons. And enough so that anyone who says "but I like X" gets called a blind fanboy by plenty of people.

Hilarious.

Nintendo has a long ways to go before they get into real trouble... Their home console will sell.. how can it not.

Mario kart
Smash brothers
Zelda

Alone will move a ton of systems. Let alone i'm sure it'll keep getting call of duty and GTA 5 etc will come.. they'll be fine.

Launch was decent.. wishin nintendo had more presence, but overall it has so many quality games. Problem for nintendo is most are available on other platforms.. The system exlusives sell systems and right now Wii U lacks the System Exclusive killer apps.

Mario is fun and all.. but it's been there done that. Isn't exactly going to make people run out and buy the system for full price on launch. Well at least not everyone that enjoys nintendo games.

Jesus, the article asks a question and the Nintendo fans get up in arms. Then to make things worse you got comments calling GAF anti-Nintendo, console-biased, and making snide comments about the Vita. If you bought a Wii U and enjoy it, why are you letting what one man says on the internet get you riled up? Do you need people to validate your purchase to feel better? That's the real question you should be asking yourselves.

i don't agree with you here. i came into this forum (a year ago now? 2?) with a completely blank slate - absolutely zero bias - and just from visiting this forum and allowing myself to be excited for the Wii U i've actually found myself polarized into being a nintendo fanboy.

Yeah, these Nintendo doomed articles are getting hilarious. There's so many people in the industry who literally want Nintendo to fail. Every passing article with this vibe in it only continues to confirm that belief. So what happens if the Wii U turns around? What happens when the 3DS reaches 50 million LTD in sales? Where will those people and these articles be then?

Carry on....

You are wrong. Ive seen every company equally shat on. 3DS launch nintendo got it. Vita has been getting it since launch. EA, MS, Capcom, SE tend to get shat on for many of the same reasons.

In many cases its well deserved though. So, eh.

will these idiotic predictions ever stop

the WiiU will have a 3DS-like turnaround. Price drop and killer apps will happen and things will be normal again. It's not just stupid, but incredibly shortsighted to believe Nintendo will not make a single move to improve things

If Rockstar follows suit with EA, WiiU could very easily miss out on some of the larger titles of the year. Also, you don't buy a WiiU to play Call Of Duty regardless of the offscreen play. Nintendo IPs are strong but they can only hold up a system for so long. The Wii survived by being a fad, the WiiU is trying to compete against the PS3/360 and the looming releases of the follow ups to those systems.

I don't want Nintendo to fail but come the monthly report for January, Nintendo could be in a world of hurt with investors if they don't pull a rabbit out of the hat soon because the games they showed off in the last Direct are too far off to make any impact now.

I think for now it's best to hold onto our opinions until after Sony and Microsoft unveil their new consoles. That way it's easier to gauge where the WiiU is in the new generation.

Either way, Nintendo will survive even if they "fail". Nintendo has a place in a lot of people's hearts. They just need that new mainline Mario to get them to open their wallets. Then there's the others who are waiting for Starfox, F-Zero, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Kirby and all those other games. They have a massive and somewhat diverse player base.

So they aren't going to die, it's just a question of who's going to lead.

Did you read the article? Why are you generalizing all those who don't agree with the article as Nintendo fans?

I don't see how making a comment about Vita's situation is snide. Why are you getting irritated about that? The Vita is in a situation worse than the Wii U due to the amount of time it has been available. Both are struggling, but the Wii U has been available for 3/2 months, while the Vita has been available for a year. I think the article is premature.

If a company fucks up, GAF will shit on them, no matter who it is. Nintendo are just getting more shit because they have had the most recent launch, simple as. Sony/MS will get it if they fuck up their launches too.

I could be way off, but I do not remember this volume of "Vita am doomed" articles coming out 2 months after release with quite frankly significantly worse sales.

you use Vita as an example - and it's a perfect example to prove my point. just look back into old Vita threads. the console was praised to hell and back as the second coming of gaming for the longest time. it wasn't preemptively doomed like 3DS was, which was doomed when it was announced, it was doomed when it was released, and is still doomed even now that the console is a success. yea, the Vita is getting shit now - it would be very weird if it wasn't.

Because it's not one man, this thread is just a culmination of every other nintendoomed thread that came before it. And before that, every Nintendoom conversation that has occured since 1989!

Say you have one really cool pair of pants you love. You've had these things for 20 years and they still fit you perfectly. Sure there are a few holes, but they are well worn in and comfortable so you keep wearing them.

Now imagine every day of those twenty years, you get made fun of for those jeans. You're the bigger man, you can shrug it off... but after all that time, it gets to be overly frustrating. As nice as it is to believe that you can simply tune out such rumblings, it does have an effect on your psychologically.

That's why some people are so bothered by these kinds of threads.

The real question is why do people like yourself get riled up over people getting riled up?

Make hypocritical posts like these and no one will take you seriously. A lot of people should take note. Why so angry?

i some how doubt this since the are supposed to be the miricle that will save the games industry etc

Maybe because a majority of the complaining about the article are Nintendo fans? I didn't know being a fan of Nintendo was bad.

This would be the case if only Nintendo was being ragged on but like someone said earlier, every company gets their day in the sun. Just ask the Vita fans.

Why would I be riled up and angry? I'm not the one letting an article get my blood pressure up. You're definitely talking to the wrong person buddy.
