The Japanese article says he is working on directing mobile games as well as being a game designer on FFVIIr. Nothing about him directing it.

yep Nomura sure likes bring up people. He's been constantly feeding his ideas to the younger generation game creators, and credited as "creative producer/director". It is truly impressive.
Games he came up with the idea/approved but didn't direct include FF7, CCFF7, BCFF7, FF Agito XIII/Type-0, FF versus XIII/XV, Dissidia FF, World of FF, FF7 G-Bike, 3rd birthday, etc.
The people he brought up to key positions include Tai Yasue, Tabata, among other lesser knowns.
I am no Nomura fanboy but I really like his mentoring philosophy.
