FINAL FANTASY Community Thread: XV Mainline Entries and Counting

Hey Kids

I got a question for the FF community.

Why has it lost its "spirit"? Is it cause the guys who put the oldies together are no longer on the team? Or because they have all grown up into different tastes? Or is it because gaming as evolved past it?

What I mean by "spirit" is the genuine feel of adventure and wonder into the worlds that they create. The last game I still felt it a little bit with was FFXII, but since then, it seems to be a lifeless cow.

I know everyone rags on FF8's characters for being "dumb" and one dimensional, but you have to admit, it made for a fun game! I just wanna hear your thoughts. I'm sad I can't have the same fun I used to with Final Fantasy.

I feel like some of the less popular summons from 7 don't get enough love. Hades is an effin boss. Titan was the rock thrower before Ifrit from 10 ever was!

I don't believe it has.

Final Fantasy has always been about changing and being different from one to another.

I don't understand why FF fans are so quick to call the franchise dead because the lastest thing doesn't fit what they want. If anything that is a good as the series continues to do a different things.

XI is quite possilbly the single biggest example of the Spirit you call for yet you didn't list that one but XII.

XIV could be if fixed. Vs XIII looks like it could also have tons of this and we don't know about things going forward.

Things change, and with a series like this it's okay to not like some.

I don't like VI or IX but I was crying or saying how the series was dead when I played IX and was hugely disappointed.

Hades was boss, well how he looked. The issue was the actual summon beyond it coming out sucked.

Still as far as summons go, FF VII gets a decent amount of love.

It's Final Fantasy Unlimited that doesn't get enough love when Black Wind's entire gimick is his Soil Gun.

Yeah, I mean when you put it in perspective like that, you're pretty right. I'm not a fan of the MMO ffs... tried em, not interested. I never usually spend more than a month or two on MMOs (swg, wow, ffXI, vanguard) so its to be expected.

Hopefully XIII vs will be a step in the right direction (for me at least ;D \\m//)

of course i got ark! and then i proceeded to be disappointed by the fact that his damage is capped at 9999. :/

did i ever tell you that eiko was my end game MVP? her 8000-9999 damage holy ripped everything to shreds from mid/late disc 3 onwards. plus her heals and buffs... yeah, best character in the game, battle wise.
I liked to use Zidane/Dagger/Eiko/Vivi in my party because I like to spam magic a lot, and I like having the cushion of two healers. There are times when I'd swap Dagger out for Rusty to use Magic Sword, though. CLANK CLANK CLANK.

This thread has compelled me to watch the Evolution of Final Fantasy videos. Now I'll be up all night. :lol

I can understand not being into the MMO's and I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for being disappointed in XIII.

However even if you do hate VII, VIII, X, and XIII you still got IX, XI, XII and XIV that change the style.

As it is it isn't like we are risticted to one style and they have shown they are continue to change and do new things with the the games so I think writing the series off wether you are a VII fan, IX fan or XIII fan is a bit much at least for now.

When we get to the point SE no longer is willing to take a chance, and we have the same thing over and over again, then pick up the pitch forks and I will be right beside you.

I may love XIII, VIII and other crazy FF's but that doesn't mean I only want one type even if it was like those.

Ugh at you. I have to wake up in four hours. I also enjoyed Gametrailers' retrospective on FF. It's probably not as deep as those videos you linked. But pretty enjoyable nonetheless: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/the-final-fantasy-retrospective/4831

I'm glad I have a holiday tomorrow because I would be in the same position otherwise. -_-

The GameTrailers one is more in-depth and better put-together because the videos I linked are more about audio and visuals of common elements throughout the series (and they are somewhat outdated now).

I really wish GT would update both the Zelda and FF retrospectives, though. They have a lot more stuff to work with now, and I like the GT retrospectives in general because of the presentation. I really loved the FF Retrospective, though, especially that last episode.

That Gametrailers retrospective is a great summary of Final Fantasy in general. They did a great job with those videos.

Final Fantasy VIII had one of the best worlds I've ever seen in any game... good god the towns are extremely beautiful there, they give you this amazing feelings of ( this is a world I want to live in )..... I wish I could live there :-(.

Actually, for some reason I just remembered the original Japanese FF10 teaser site. It had some text in a Flash file and this song played. It honestly got me really hyped - at that point I had no idea that there would be songs not by Uematsu in the game, and I loved the sound of it.

Great to see so many FFVIII fans! I always had the impression that it was one of the hated FFs.

This is what it's all about... I could move to Dollet tomorrow. Winhill is a bit too out-of-the-way as I'm a city guy, and Esthar, while worthy of a few visits, is a little too artificial
and there's the risk of getting breathed on by a Marlboro on the way there, particularly if I'm not in a car
.

Looking at the cities and towns before FF8, it was like Square was hesitant to actually show buildings that you couldn't enter, and couldn't move on from the "these towns are supposed to have populations in the thousands, but we're only going to show you the six or seven buildings that you can actually enter" paradigm. They started to overturn it with Narshe in FF6 but couldn't go all the way. I liked seeing all those other houses and buildings that were neeed to fill out the landscape, like the houses off in the distance in Winhill, and they did a good job of subtly conveying that you couldn't enter them.

By FF12 they'd really perfected this art, and you were in living, breathing cities that had dozens of people and buildings to interact with, but dozens more that you couldn't. And it wasn't even immersion-breakingly overt that you couldn't. Cities with huge populations off beyond the edge of the screen, but manageable populations in front of you. I totally loved it.

And Aeana, you did a great job on those fonts -- I'd never played CT on the DS after seeing how tiny they were!

I'm an old-school Mac fan who misses Chicago. I've designed a few bitmap number fonts for game hacks but have mostly stuck with numbers; whoever designed Chicago got so much style out of just 12 points and 72 dots per inch. A master to be emulated!

Thanks.

And yeah, I like Chicago for certain things. It works well in low-resolution environments in particular, like the iPod and SNES games. Susan Kare designed it, as well as Monaco and Geneva

How many FFs have there been that you've played since XII?

XIII? XIV? The spinoffs like 4WoL or even the Crystal Chronicle side spinoffs? What is it that you're referring to? I think you are misconceiving the difference between a series falling flat verus a series you personally haven't found gravitation towards in recent years.

Personally, I think VersusXIII will mend that, while XIII-2 remains more of a crutch for the franchise than anything.

If they are Dutch, upright and breathing they are more racist than your favorite player
I know people who lost interest when IV and VI came out, since they were huge players of the original (and Dragon warrior) to them, the SNES games had already "lost the flavor" This stuff is always relative to entry point and age.

Which is why i consider VI to be the best one ;) However, if i had to pick the most "complete" I would argue IX hits all the notes (even if the car game is inferior)

I remember when i had the choice between pokemon red\blue or ff7 platinum. Spent my 50 deutsch mark on ff7. Without even knowing what to expect. Back then i thought the ending of the midgar chapter was the best thing ever. And then u realize that a whole world is lying ahead of you. What a glorious game. Still my favourite ff of all time.

Do we have to refrain from bashing SE in this thread, or are they fair game the next time they say something really stupid about the FF series?

From the OP: Be constructive. Things like "lol, Nomura sucks, belts zippers." is not acceptable.

Fair game as long as it isn't 4chan like it seems to me.

That pretty much what I got out of it, so as long as they say/do something stupid we can comment, outside of that, this is for free discussion on all FF titles then, correct...

Teknoman said:
I can see that, but its anything but generic ya know? Unless he just meant the sprites in the original games?

That's what I meant actually. Yea the original artwork is great, especially for it's time. But taking one abstract picture and morphing a moving 3D model around it does take a little skill.

For example take the Amano art of Final Fantasy 1 Warrior of Light and then look at the intro to Final Fantasy 1 on the PS1. You could get much worse.

The foundations of the designs were definitely Amano inspired, but now they are perfected and are actually able to be used in game without being out of placed.

(man that was kinda hard to describe)

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I'll say it before and I'll say it again,

Final Fantasy III is the most underappreciated game in the series.

But yeah, cool thread, I was much more of an FF fan in the older days, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 being like a bible to me. I love the best FF games for their awesome and imaginative worlds, and combat/gameplay systems.

Favorite moments in FF games:
-FF1: Going to the Sky Castle
-FF2: Battling the Behemoth in the arena, and hearing the boss music playing for the first time in the game
-FF3: Getting an airship, and then learning the world you live in is just a small island in a huge ocean
-FF4: Cecil becoming a Paladin
-FF5: Battle on the Big Bridge
-FF6: The whole Opera scene, one of the most unique scenarios in all of gaming
-FF7: The Cloud/Sephiroth flashback in Kalm town
-FF8: The clever final dungeon, where you fight powerful bosses to get your battle menu options back
-FF9: Beatrix and Steiner teaming up
-FF10: The whole opening scene, Tidus and Auron being chased by spawns of Sin
-FF11: ---
-FF12: When I beat several bosses by just letting the game play itself with its use of Gambits
-FF13: The visual explosion of the opening cinema to chapter 12.
-FF14: ---
-FF:MQ: Getting into Doom Castle and hearing that buttrock

You know, I wish Square gave us DLC for FFXIII in the form of additional missions for Pulse.
I miss running around that place battling, felt almost like a next-gen Monster Hunter with cool music and badass Cactuars.

That would suck for me because for some reason I have the PAL version of FFXIII.

There's no PAL (or NTSC) version of FFXIII. That distinction kinda goes out the window with the HD consoles; there's just regional differences (and, in the case of the PS3 at least, not even region coding).

Anyhow, yeah, DLC for FFXIII probably could've fixed a lot of the issues with the game (even if it couldn't fix the story). A pity that never happened.

I wish they'd given us additional missions on Cocoon so that we could go see those beautiful environments again. I assumed we'd be going back once we reached Pulse and there were missions scattered around. Then I thought we'd be going back after going to Eden in Chapter 12, and I really thought we'd be going back when you get the chance to start warping around before the final battle.

It was like this game was determined to dash my hopes at every possible turn.

At least the music was excellent, the character designs (particularly some of the NPCs) pretty cool, and there were interesting alphabets to decipher. Other than that the salt shaker never moved from its position tipped over my open wounds.

Final Fantasy XI - Distant Worlds
Final Fantasy XI - Distant Worlds (Guitar)
Final Fantasy XI - Distant Worlds (Guitar x Vocal)

I am also quite partial to Aria di Mezzo Carattere.

More people should give the FFXI OST a chance. I think it's really good.
Ragnarok (Wings of the Goddess)
Battle Theme 2
Battle Theme 3 (Rise of the Zilart)
Belief (Rise of the Zilart)
Awakening
Recollection
The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah (Rise of the Zilart)
The Celestial Capital
Tough Battle (the first one)
Hall of the Gods

I haven't played FFXI a lot (or even its expansions), but I think the soundscape is really wonderful.
