Final Fantasy VII 15th Anniversary

It was a great experience for me as a kid. I bought it on launch day and long before that I would be in supermarkets staring at game magazines with new media of the game. I was perplexed of the section that showed the Shinra corporate ladder and the different Shinra executives. I remember being amazed that they would have a modern corporate electric company in a Final Fantasy game. When I played the game on launch day, I was immediately hooked by the opening scenario. The first segment of the game in Midgar was exciting. When you left Midgar, the rest of the game was good as well, but I don't think it topped the time you spent in the city.

So my older brother told me all about how unfinished the game apparently was, and how they planned on having a lot more in it.

He particularly mentioned something about a submarine room or something. I don't remember the specifics.

Is any of this true?

A RIDICULOUS amount of FF7 stuff was cut and changed.

http://thelifestream.net/

Go wild, those guys obsessively poured through every document possible to find out the cut material.

As for the sub room, yeah, it's quite possible one of the cut areas was underwater at some point, perhaps the Ancient City?

man so many memories.

when they parachute into Midgar was so uplifting and the music just added fuel to the fire. It's rare when a game story actually has moments like that-- the stakes are on the table and you feel close to the end.

FFXIII kind of tried to do it when they go back to Cocoon but failed miserably.

I preferred the scenes that didn't kill the uniqueness of the character with blatantly sexualized FMV that sparked a generation of over-exaggerated fan-art and doujins.

I do wonder if the majority of oldschool fans prefer the character to be depicted more seriously or forever represented as masturbatory material. I thought AC had the perfect blend of creating a more realistic depiction that didn't lose any of its attractiveness.

You know something's up when people actually complained that her Dissidia artwork was "too small".
Well, it has absolutely nothing to do with that in my case.

The designs in AC and so on, are interchangeable, creepy, porcelain-like people that contradict the tone and setting set by the original game.

I bet this was Toriyama's doing....

FFVII... It's been a while. As Kagari, one of my favorite memory was the whole Shinra building and the escape that follows.

Also... Well, it's cliché, but Aerith's death really moved me. The whole scene left me bursting into tears (I probably was 12 or so, I don't remember exactly). I had Yuffie in my team, and I remember her running away, sobbing when Cloud was holding Aerith's body to the lake (somehow, this little detail stayed in my mind).

To be honest, I would love to see FFVII have his remake... But if I trusted Squaresoft, I don't really trust Square-Enix, and I miss Hironobu Sakaguchi.

One element that really stood out to me was the friendship that Tifa and Aeris were seemingly able to develop over the course of the game, despite there being competition over Cloud. I remember early on Tifa had a moment of annoyance, but eventually their friendship become something quite genuine. The triangle in VII was pretty compelling.

The Shinra Corp theme is so good. Definitely helped amplify the evilness of the whole corporation.

Loved it when it played during the last battle between Avalanche and Shinra when fighting ProudClod.

I guess people have to blame him for everything that's ever wrong with the series now.

I never said the scene was a bad thing!

This is not good. I'm discussing and reminiscing about FFVII the day before I'm getting XIII-2. It's a sure-fire recipe for disappointment and even pain.

Yup and it's pretty awesome - and yet, the fanbase will never not pit them against eachother.

I remember an excerpt from a magazine where they asked someone at Square why they decided to make a movie sequel to Final Fantasy VII. The guy from Square (I'm not sure exactly who it was) said that it would be too easy to make a game sequel of Final Fantasy VII, and that they wanted to make a movie instead to be creative or something.

It's kind of funny that now they are complaining that making a Final Fantasy like the ones on the PS1 would be too hard because of HD Towns.

Also Kagari accept my friend request on Steam :P

Your avatar reminds me of... Angela Aki...

I remember buying a PlayStation after being fed up with my Nintendo 64. The only games I owned were party games, meanwhile my friends at school were talking about Resident Evil, Marvel Super Heroes, and Crash Bandicoot.

The moment I opened my PS1, there was a demo disc with Final Fantasy VII. I had no idea what the game was, or what it was supposed to be about. By the time I finished the demo I ran to the store to buy a copy.

I was shocked that the game had three discs. My mind was blown beyond belief.

First off, Final Fantasy 7 is one of my favorite games of all time.

I believe I was either 11 or 12 years old the first time I played it and I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I was over my Mom's friend's house at the time, and she had a PlayStation for her kids who she adopted, who only lived there in the summer. So, they had final fantasy 7. I don't recall if I had ever even heard of the final fantasy series at that point in time. Anyway, I play it at her house for a few and ask to borrow it, she says sure. I didn't get to play it for a long time, but was still blown away.

I've been playing games since I was probably 6 years old on a regular basis, but there wasn't a single game until FF7 that really changed the way i looked at video games and drove me into certain genres at that time. So when I finally beat 7 i realized what jrpgs were and how many of them were on the market at that time. Immediately started reading everything I could about the ones that were out and would go out and pick them up or rent them.

Also, at the time of playing all these jrpgs and 7, I had a very close/good(at the time) friend who shared the same interest as me. Every weekend we would sleep over each others house and I would bring my tv or he would bring his, along with our playstations, and we would just play jrpgs all night. Shame he isn't my friend anymore, because those days were some my most memorable as a kid.

It's a shame this gen has been so lackluster for jrpgs. I know there are some gems on handhelds, but I just don't enjoy handheld gaming like I probably should.

Moments I'll never forget:
-Seeing Jenovah in the container. I didn't even know wtf it was, but was still creeped out as a kid. I didn't know what it was until one of my sisters friends who was a huge JRPG buff told me. He had actually beat ff7 3 days after it came out.

-When Sephiroth broke into Shinra and killed everyone. The blood and the background music literally scared me like no other game had. I had played the resident evils, but those games are more of a shock scare. This was fear.

-The Turks theme. Probably my favorite theme for any game, ever.

-Breaking out of Shinra and then being able to explore a whole world. I literally had no fucking clue what to do, but it blew me away.

-Being able to meet new characters and have them join your party across the world I thought was really special. I remember always being super excited when I thought/knew someone was going to join. Cid is still to this day my favorite FF character of all time.

There are plenty more, but I feel like I've said enough.

One of the best RPG's i have ever played and one of the last jrpgs that i enjoyed.

Stand out memories

Escaping Midgar, meeting Barret and the gang was the memory that stands out.
Meeting Aerith, and watching hopelessly as she gets bladed :(

also screw the haters i would love a remake i have seen worst titles get the green light to get a remake, plus this would sell like hot cakes

Definitely one of my favorite games, I enjoyed every part of it. When I first played the game I was too young to understand what was happening, so when I replayed it the experience was much better. My party the first time was Cloud/Tifa/Barrett. The second time I went with Cloud/Cid/Vincent.

My favorite final fantasy VII moment was finally beating Emerald Weapon at level 79, with 4 minutes left because I never got the underwater materia. Cid and Vincent were dead, Cloud had around 1200 HP left and a limit break with ultima weapon (the lower HP you have the less you take off with Ultima weapon; for those who don't know) and Emerald Weapon died

I've never wanted to save my game so bad after beating emerald weapon haha.

Grinding to get the Golden Chocobo was fun, Knights of the Round is a 10-0 matchup against Sephiroth.

I also forgot how amazing the music is in the game.

Buried in the Snow

One of my favorite songs from the OST

ugh, i thought this thread was going to be about an announcement for a remake

utter excitement turned to utter heartache

In one sense, I want to say the Dissidia art style is perfect for a remake. In another, I can't imagine a FF7 where the world engine and battle engine characters are the same. So many scenarios had an extra goofy charm that would be lost with more realistic characters, even though there are also many dramatic scenes that may be improved by using the battle engine style. I don't think there is a satisfactory way of doing a remake because of this strange blend of art styles that was in the original.

man, ff7
i was in 7th grade when it came out
i had an nes and genesis growing up. had always been into videogames very casually. played platformers etc. around that that same time, maybe a little earlier, i started reading game magazines and getting a bit more into games. so i knew about rpgs. but mostly just based on pictures i saw. i remember thinking they looked stupid and had "crappy graphics"
fast forward to ff7
my cousin brings over this game for a family party. it was ff7
i remember watching him play, i had never even seen a game like this. i thought it looked so cool. (the first game with an actual story or anything like that i played was resident evil. and that blew my mind)
so i asked for ff7 for christmas

i will never forget the part when you're with avalanche, on the train. and everyone is just sitting around talking and it blew my fucking 12 year old mind
they were just sitting there, talking.

i probably "lived" in my basement for the next couple years playing rpgs after that haha

so much nostalgia for this game

It wasn't until Tifa gently caressed Aerith's face and ran off in tears that the scene gut-punched me. I knew it was coming, but I wasn't prepared for the skillful use of the characters' reactions.

Tifa and Aerith actually have one of the more compelling relationships in the game, since they're both after the same guy but doesn't let that get in the way of their friendship, which also started fresh following Aerith's interest in Cloud.

In fact, there was a supplemental material included with a Japanese strategy guide that included written journals by some of the characters. They were written by the same author who wrote "Maiden Who Travels the Planet".

Tifa's diary mainly talks about Aerith, describing her initial impressions upon meeting her. They detail how she was bothered by Aerith's interest in Cloud, but couldn't hold a grudge because "she was instantly likeable".

The last entry follows her death, to which Tifa vows to hold back her tears and continue the fight "as her friend, and as a human".

See, this is why I hate all the infatuation about her boobs. It clashes with all the effort they made to fleshing out the character beyond her appearance.

But with the way Square seems committed to listening to fan feedback, I worry that the next time she shows up in an FF game, it'll be in a sling bikini and two cup sizes bigger.

They really are getting progressively shameless, aren't they...

Are you sure about that?

But it's really the same song just with different instruments. Same note data.

I'd be honestly impressed if you (or anyone here, really) had the original Japanese version and dug their way through to that specific part of the debug room.

Love the game. Pretty sure that's still the game with the biggest emoitnal impact on me, even today. The music is so beautiful.

Well, I do have the original Japanese version. It's the first version I ever played.
But no, I never got to the debug room, but I've seen videos of it on YouTube, which I believe counts as hearing it before, eh?

I remember the first 15 minutes so freshly, I remember my amusement when suddenly the static camera moved to show a close up of Cloud looking at the Shinra reactor, I was like."HOOOOOLYYYYY SHIIIIIIIT!".

Can't you believe I never noticed the juggling boobs until years later? I was such a pure young boy....

Well, I SUPPOSE you win on a technicality, but youtube's a bit cheatin' and not the real thing.

Have you also seen the rare original-unused version of the Northern Crater explosion?

I've finally got around to playing Crisis Core, and I was forced, I think mostly due to the music, to download FF7 and start replaying it. Then I saw this thread.

fate.
