Firmware Version 2.00 - Official Press Release

one you pay $50 a year for one you do not. :/ So far beyond the in game msging PSN has been just as good as XBL and better in some areas.

Remember people tend to focus on the negatives more than the positives.
So people (fanboys or whatever) cant stomach the fact that the competition has a feature that everyone seems to enjoy, is taking ages to come to the PS3. :/

I'm happy with it. I know Sony won't stop updating it and I love my PSP. The biggest issue I've had was coordinating the Remote Play on my devices, so this is a godsend. Especially when I'm out-of-town.

Yeah I don't know what is going on. Sony is going to force us to go through HOME all the time?

Give us in game access to our friends Sony.

I'm pretty sure it's never going to happen so people should just take a big gulp and accept it and move on. When they showed it pre-PS3 release it was obviously a total fake and it seems that they just can't pull it off within the ram/cpu constraints or they would have done it by now. Unless the PS3 magically gets a ram/hardware upgrade I don't think it'll ever happen.

I agree with you, I can't see it happening at this point. Their resources are focused elsewhere.

What's not going to happen?

Pressing the PS button during gameplay and seeing transparent icons?

Seriously? That's too taxing for the PS3?

Its going to happen. Alot of games can do in-game messaging, its just Sony not having all their eggs in the same basket.

See, thats what i don't get. Why do some games have access to it and others don't? and why would they show at E3 that they could choose music off the PS3 via the PSHome button? The only reason i see is that they're tying it all to Home when its released. Home is still in beta form (pre-beta if you ask some people) and while i dont want to break NDA, alot of problems most people have should be worked out by the time home is released.

I guess Sony thinks this will help leverage more PS3 sales from PSP owners (or PSP sales from PS3 owners) . . . but I really think they are crazy to spend so much effort on features that only a very small number of people will really use.
I guess if it gets them a few more sales it will be worth it. Shame none of these features will ever be useful to me.

It's a year later and I'm still waiting Speevy. I'm running low on optimism at this point.

I'll be glad when PS3 owners finally get in-game XMB so I don't have to read any more complaints about it. I really don't care much about that feature otherwise. I have more concerns about Wii online.

See here's what people fail to realize. Silver members have every functionality that Gold members do, the only exception is online play. Silver members can send messages, read messages, stream music, cross game voice chat, without paying a dime. Fifty dollars only gets you online play, everything else is equal.

Sony keeps dropping the ball. You guys can sit here and say that it won't sell the console, but you're just deluding yourselves. Harrison and Co. are asleep at the wheel, too busy worrying about some virtual world, instead of focusing on what really matters.
speaking of failing to realize, how long did it take MS to get the dashboard where it is today? I remember the modded boxes had a better OS than the original.

You talking about the original xbox? (Which indeed has a far better interface when modded)

You can already get notifications about your messages. I seriously doubt it's impossible.

With PES out, I really wanted at least in-game XMB. Game doesn't even have a friends list, so it's basically impossible to have a random game with friends. It's a really big feature to me, as I know it is to many here. Don't know what the hold up continues to be unfortunately.

Even the limited friends list access in HSG5 (in lobby only) feels so refreshing compared to the rest.

All the functionalities I referenced were there day one. Sure they added background downloading, queuing up multiple downloads, power saving downloads, and a bunch of other features, but what I referenced was there day one. And why are you bringing up modded Xbox OS's, we're discussing the 360/PS3. You can't run homebrew on the 360, so I'm not exactly seeing your point. Sony is still 2 years behind as far as I'm concerned.

I like Sony as much of you guys, but you guys need to open your eyes and see what's going on around you.

I think it's close to 20 years now. Built on the NT core isn't it?

you're saying the 360-OS isn't a direct result of the Xbox-OS?

I'm pretty sure they're working on some form of in-game XMB access. What they need to do to shut up these prepubescent 32 year olds is to show them some form of a Work in progress. Sorta like a beta code or something like that. it'll shut these boys up for a while.

thats PES issue tho... they have the sdk to implement it, they just didnt.

It was already working in the firmware 1.0 preview units sent to the press. It was shown in the IGN hands on.

No it wouldn't. Then we'd have hundreds of consouls running around claiming they knew when it was going to be included.

Using your logic about modded OS's, why has Sony failed to capitalize on the PSP XMB mod scene? I mean the PS3 OS is a direct result of the PSP right? Stop bringing up the mod scene, I don't care about it. My concern is what Sony is doing, not some hackers.

Firmware update 2.0 crashed SCEA's blog!!
:D

but seriously, the mods there are going to have to work overtime!!

you can also make to argument that they need to be faster with this on a competive level because MS isn't standing still with updating the features of their firmware either.
Microsoft isn't standing still, but Sony's added more to the PS3 firmware in the 3 months I've owned mine than Microsoft did in the 10 months I owned my 360.

Now that this is out, the only two things they're lacking that Microsoft has is the ability to read messages and your friends list while in-game and the ability to play music in-game. Ok, MSN integration too, but Microsoft runs and would never allow that.

Maybe the fall 360 update will change that, but... I'd expect Sony to be ahead of Microsoft in terms of the state of their firmware by the full release of Home and the DS3. That is, unless Microsoft really steps it up.

who's talking about the mod -scene? i'm just saying MS has years more experience in this OS than Sony has in the XMB. And that MS wasn't doing too hot with their OS either in their first years.

which goes back to my point then. They don't need to "compete" with MS because firmware don't sell consoles.

Firmware doesn't sell consoles, but it is a determining factor in multiplatform games. For those who own 360 and PS3, why would you get the PS3 version which doesn't support in-game friend invites, custom soundtracks or achievements? Firmware deficiencies are hindering PS3 software sales.

After 1.80, everyone had great expectations for 2.00.
Denied.

This update would be received much more warmly if it wasn't "2.00".

I think Remote Start is excellent.
Unfortunately, that's the one thing everyone knew was coming, and the other features aren't causing much excitement. The themes are nice though.

not everyone considers those to be decisive factors. there's another factor that might influence your decision and it's called hardware-reliability.

You're way off. Having to quit out of a game to read a message sent from a friend in certain games is much more influential to the casual gamer...

:lol

True. I don't own a 360 yet (for the reason you stated), but if I did I would be buying crossplatform games for 360 because of custom soundtracks and in-game messaging/cross-game invites. I know I'm not alone there.

Running out of arguments, eh?

What do you mean by really stepping it up?

I think people should certainly accept it and move on about this update, but I don't see how the logic follows that just because they haven't done it by now, it can't be done/won't be done.

cros-game invites. Now THAT'S what I like about XBL. And I know ur not alone in your opinion, but I know I'm not alone in mine either. As for custom soundtracks: I've used it only in Gears.

I don't think it has anything to do with RAM / CPU constraints. After all the PS3 is quite able to download stuff in the background.

I expect that in-game is going to come, but it's also very likely that Home will have a major impact on how it is implemented in the XMB, what the backend infrastructure is like and a bunch of other things. They may have good reason for not putting it in now if they intend to do something with Home for it.

Good point, and that is my believe also. If it is going to be available, it's going to be available at the same time Home arrives. Probably because they need to have the software working together without a fault.

But then again, I don't expect anything at this moment. FW 2.00 seems solid enough for now, and I don't really mind not being able to read my messages when playing a game. People will just have to wait before I can send a message back.
